  • I just wanna grab two great big handfuls of Ricky's belly here, shake it about and say 'wibble, wobble, wibble, wobble, fat man'. I bet he would love that too.

    Play a record.

  • Shit gets better every time I watch it

  • So fucking beautiful and powerfully relevant.

  • All Ricky says here is still powerfull, interesting and true....

..But it's still the Stephen Merchant bit that makes me laugh out loud!

  • It sucks that they changed the dialogue for HBO. He said X Factor, not American Idol.

  • @Soundgarden8497 lmao, what?

  • pause at 2:38 awww :-(

  • ....and that is why Ricky Gervais is completely justified in all those things he said at the Emmy Awards.

  • besides a powerfull message, it is wrapped in a brilliant performance... amazing how gervais puts so much emotion in the speech...

  • that was spell bounding

  • The woman with the curls on the couth who's looking at the television, she's such an good actress!!

  • tears on this looks more real than they do in invention of lying, how he tries not to cry and chokes on his words

  • Comment removed

  • Genius

  • "fuck you the makers of this show"

"fuck you for watching this at home, sham on you"

people that encourage reality tv shows need shooting

  • you ignorant yank, you cut out the last joke

  • i agree mate....i cannot believe that this guy cut it just before the punchline.....as that was the reason for the whole fucking scene.....it just goes to show that people love to listen to the ranting, but miss the fucking point completely............fuckin bananas

  • @TheMeta1 with out the punchline its not a comedic sence but a scene telling the truth on the media industry of todays culture i think that was the real point of this scene not the joke at the end

  • @809Ollie no dude, you missed my point ....i know its not a joke like punchline....but it underpins the entire scene, with the very hypocrisy that gervais is talking about, allowing the concept to take full circle in the audiences eyes, basically saying that although we can all see the hypocrisy we still go out and take part in it.

  • @TheMeta1 this is a vaild point but i think the scene stands better without the joke. i think the joke overshadows the statement. but it works ether way i guess

  • @809Ollie i see what you are saying but it takes the scene toward the next level of hypocrisy, which is first the rant on the sofa...(which i think we have all done at one time or another) onto someone agreeing with us, and then walking straight out the door to buy a copy of heat magazine.....i find that if someone is putting this scene on, they should do the whole thing that was all.....some people on here seem to have taken exception to that and started swearing at me, oh well, they r dumb

  • @TheMeta1 yea this is youtube what do u expect lol

  • @TheMeta1 I agree, the point is that sometimes things fly in one ear and out the other and how her appetite for fame is so strong that not even the speech by Andy made any sense to her. The girl and everyone else in that house is a prime example of what Andy was talking about and to have the last bit where the girl says, "just give me five minutes, there's paparazzi outside, let me put on a bikini" just prooves what he(Andy) just said. All-in-all still an awesome scene.

  • @TheMeta1 what is fucking wrong with you? It's not the reason for the scene, it's in there so you don't forget that it's a comedy, yeah. But it's a genuinely warm human moment and you aren't supposed to be pissing yourself laughing at it, that's why Gervais & Merchant are unbelievably good writers, you penis

  • @jaryd12345 no dude, you missed my point ....i know its not a joke like punchline....but it underpins the entire scene, with the very hypocrisy that gervais is talking about, allowing the concept to take full circle in the audiences eyes, basically saying that although we can all see the hypocrisy we still go out and take part in it.. so it you who have missed my point ...Penis!

  • @TheMeta1 It's not the WHOLE point of the scene though. It still works without that part, it still shows the character development, I'm sorry I missed your oh so clever point, perhaps if you want to see the whole scene you should shell out for the dvd, you cunt.

  • got the dvd however, the fact that you think it is a joke, even after i have explained that i do not see it as a garden variety joke) just a concept, relating to the hypocrisy of all people involved, this balances the scene, and although a message is sent in the main part of it, it is not complete without the reference to experiencing the hypocrisy first hand, as apposed to/or as well as, having a rant on the sofa. please stop calling people names ... it makes you look stupid

  • @jaryd12345 in fact, do you even know what the girl says to him after this video cuts in the full version.....if you did you would see that i was right....now go watch it and engage your brain before trying to be clever....

  • Couldnt be arsed to read it all but has anyone noticed this has been edited for the American audience?

  • that girl is so fittt

  • .. and fook you, for watching this YouTube clip. it's your fault!

  • Agreed.

  • nah the whole scene was great...SM's line was real funny...but Maggie laffing was the high point

  • this speech, oddly enough, is what made me stop reading gossip rags, and watching shows that out people down and it's beautiful and i love what Ricky said.

  • @GINARRY4LIFE I've started to do that in recent months. I look at a magazine and think 'what's the point' or 'who cares' really? The bit he says about Lindsay Lohan especially just sums up most (but not all) magazine gossip. Hurray for summing it up Ricky!

  • @GINARRY4LIFE so it took this to make you stop? you never thought for yourself before this?

  • I've seen his standup and I love the Office both UK and US versions...i've never seen Extras, is it supposed to be like Big Brother?

  • No no (: This is just a scene from Extras, where he is in Big Brother.

    The real Extras is hilarious!!

  • could not have been said better.

  • damn, it cut just before the bit where she says, 'um let me just put a bikini on there will be photographers outside

  • cus its to show how pathetic there lives have become thats why its completly hillarious

  • brilliant the only thing that struck me as odd on the third viewing, was why was merchant, barry and robbie watching big brother from inside carphone wearhouse, apart from that its great

  • 24 hour carphone warehouse, obviously!

  • LOOOOOL absolute, brilliance. Fookin genius sir. I agree with one of the comments down there. It'd be good to see Ricky do something serious. A bit like how Robin Williams uses his diversity.

  • hahahaha!! ricky is funny as hell!

  • Sooo good! Comedy to pathos in a few seconds..Class!

  • aww thts mint! if you watch it the second time you take it in proper

  • it's quite moving if you think about it

  • I'd love to see him in a serious heavy movie, just to see him flexing his dramatic talents...

  • i cryed to b onest...im a 11 year kid....probly the sene eva

  • such great acting

  • yes it is u fucking dickhead, its a sarcy comment from ricky. its gold.

  • oh fuck u fuck u twelve fuckin times

  • idiot

  • idiot

  • It seemed as if Ricky/Andy was speaking from the heart and was given the perfect opportunity to speak his peace! Right on Ricky/Andy!! Damn shame the show is over!!!!!!

  • This does make me well up a little bit...

    Excellent acting.

  • this is so, so, so true.

  • lol this musst be the american version because on the english he says x factor not american idol and ruby wax not ryan secrest

  • that's funny...on the american version there are loads of american pop culture references, so you're right, they must have had two different versions of several lines.

  • your right- this couldnt have been said better. its so true and terribly sad of society today. well done ricky gervais for saying it as it is.

    atvmidlands uk

  • love the bit at the end, where he simply says ok...comedy gold, love it

  • how is that comedy gold its not suppose to be funny wtf?

  • idiot

  • man..this guy is a comic genius..he makes the best finales the one for the office was also amazing RICKY GERVAIS!!!

  • What is barry about to say to darren at the end? "I don't think he..."

  • hahahahahaha

    such a mong

  • "I don't think he means you."

  • he was going to say "i dont think he was talking about you" lol.

  • gervais tagged this in ihs blog

  • The best television moment EVER!!!!!

  • This is amazing Televison and Gervais is brilliant and its so true. Rock the fuk on!

  • Do you think when he says "f*ck you" to the audience, he's talking to the real audience? Hm...

  • Yeah this is really good writing. Gervais and Merchant are really talented.

I hope they make a new series.

  • one of the best monologues since shakespeare dropped some fuckin' knowledge on this shit.

  • Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant - take a bow. Wonderful piece of writing, terrific acting too, not only from Ricky but also Ashley Jensen. This clip should be showed world wide to people who consider applying to go on these awful reality shows.

  • Woah!!!! shit, i thought he wasn't such a good actor! that was fucking splendid!

  • well maybe your right but then hell never hear your opinion behind his millions of pounds and his successful career and millions of fans still your probably right......

  • lol well ricky just linked this video in his blog so I think he might've read it

But he also will have read all the positive feedback on how awesome a monologue that was

well done ricky! you're fucking brilliant

  • oh well

    he most likely wont care

  • Where is Andy is he on big brother?

  • The actor is Ricky Gervais, and he has done two very popular shows called "Extras" and "The Office" (not the USA version). He has also done a few stand-up tours.

Try googling him to find some more clips and find out more about his work - a lot of people, myself included, find him hilarious

  • yeah, in the christmas special he goes into the big brother house

  • one of the best moments of modern british comedy

  • The man is a genius....one of the greats of comedy....very moving scene and articulates what most of us think...and not forgetting Stephen Merchant

  • All the time I watch that I feel like crying.

  • american idol thing so fucking true

  • Liked The Office....Adored Extras....but was never a massive Ricky Gervias fan, until this moment.

This speech hit home hard and is as true now as it will ever be. One of the finest pieces of writing and acting ive seen in a long while.

I gained so much respect for him whilst this speech was being shown and my family sat in front of the TV mouths open. He was awesome :)

  • Good acting? No, Brilliant acting. I thought occured; the last episode of the office (the american version) should be something like this.

  • Deniro would be proud.

  • "Love me or I'll kill myself!" "Well, go kill yourself then."

    Best line EVER.

  • he's also a pretty good actor when he's being serious

  • This scene was amazing, incredibly emotional and funny at the same time. I think it made a real statement about our popular culture, but not that many people clicked on.

  • Can anyone put the UK version of the xmas special on here please??? You know its the American one because he references Ryan Seacrests and E channel... i think in the UK one he says Graham Norton and E4?

  • that was a great scene. im suprised that big brother program let themselves get ridaculed like that. but its good.

  • When I saw this I got all teary eyed, beautiful.

  • Brilliant and so true

  • Not only one of the funniest men on the planet but probably the most underrated actor as well. Look at what he did with David Brent and with this scene. Genius. Hats off to you, Ricky!

  • Spot on Ted, spot on!

  • it's TAD. Tad Rapidly. At your Service!

  • Nice one Tod! Top Shelf Comment!

  • What's all this commotion about this Tid fellow? I hear he's a top notch boy.

  • Grrrrrrrr! :-)

  • Tud, you are absolutley right mate!

  • best thing they ever done....ok maybe not as many belly laughs as the office but i love this show....and this christmas special said it all about celebrity and fame.

  • kill yourself then.....brilliant....

  • Fuck you. That was a brilliant monologue. I was surprised how talented the big G is.

  • It's supposed to be ironic. He hasn't sold out, if anything, he was mocking the way he came to fame. Surely that is obvious?

  • Indeed.Listen again. He castigates himself most harshly of all."And fuck me as well,I'm the worst of all."That's what makes the speech so powerful.

  • wow, now THAT is a true modern day genius, and no i'm not being sarcastic, Ricky really is. only he and steve merchant could have come up with such an awesome ending

  • brilliant, true, emotional! Ricky is god!

  • love this rant!! so apt

  • this makes me cry everytime I watch it.

  • its shows like big brother that are making this world spiral downwards... its seriously not doing this world any good... its a global cotastrofy just as bad as scientology or religious wars.

sure it doesnt SEEM as bad, but who knows how this kind of publicity can progress.

  • One of the best endings I can think of.

  • so true

  • yeat another masterpiece from gervais and merchant

  • Everyone here seems to have said it really...perfection.

  • Ricky Gervais knows how to ACT... this was perfectly scripted, perfectly timed and masterfully delivered in a more affective and emotive manner than I thought was possible in a sitcom... amazing

  • classic

  • Ricky Gervais knows how to ACT... this was perfectly scripted, perfectly timed and masterfully delivered in a more affective and emotive manner than I thought was possible in a sitcom... amazing

  • this was one of the most brilliant, moving scenes i have watched of ANY show. honestly, it was such an amzing preformance. I watched it with my dad and we were both in tears. It couldnt have been better written. well done ricky and stephen!

  • Extras, the only sit-com that made me cry.

  • Same. such a wonderful piece of work

  • Ahhh you cut out the best bit, when she says:

"Hang on a sec let me get my bikini they'll be millions of cameras out there"

  • Does anyone know where to but this episode in Region 2? Because It's not included in the dvd series.

  • Ricky Gervais... is there anything this man can't do?

  • i watched this with my mom and dad and my dad an i both had tears in our eyes lol

  • Simply brilliant, it made me cry.

  • i honestly dont think ive ever seen such realistic acting thats why its so moving cos its so real, its awesome ricky is a leg end

  • Amazing, as many have already said...my favourite TV moment of all time.

    Brilliantly written, brilliantly acted.

    Just genius.

  • It's about time this was said.

Fuck celebrity culture and anyone who follows it.

  • Great monologue, so Ricky Gervais CAN act (even though in a small range of characters), this touched me (the brilliant bastards also pulled it off in the Office Christmas special). It shows their freshness and ability to relativize both the industry they're in. Self-deprecation is a healthy quality. I was moved to tears as well (02:20, first second is just the sound of hid voice breaking and then the image with tears and all). Thanks a bunch

  • Hilarious!

  • This speech brought tears to my eyes because of its honesty.

  • Same here. I had never cried watching a comedy.

  • Watched this on Xmas day. Amazing, so much comedy, then right at the end, a serious, well delivered speech that got my hairs standing on my neck. What a way to finish the Extras series.

  • Simply the best piece of TV that Ricky and Stephen have produced so far. Brilliant.

  • forget best piece of TV that ricky and stephen have produced, it's the best piece of tv that anyone has produced.

too bad the very end of the scene was cut where the blond bimbo says "wait, there's paparazzi outside, let me go fetch my bikini"

  • wonderful. my all time favourite tv moment. beautiful acting and writins.

  • One of the greatest shows ever made!

  • I saw this when it went out on the BBC and I think this is a slightly altered version for the US. The Ryan Seacrest reference wasn't in it, nor was E! channel, I can't remember what the alternative was but I think it was UK specific.

  • Crack! Homerun!

The depth of acting by Ricky Gervais (Andy) and Ashley Jensen (Maggie) in this scene is just incredible.

This even tops the ending of The Office Xmas special.

Can't wait to see what Gervais and Merchant give us next.

  • I hope you win the Golden Globe tonight Ricky!

  • Thank the lord for Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant - Most moving moment of 2007.

  • this speech should be called 'the celebrity speech'

  • "The Victorian freakshow never went away. Now it's called Big Brother, or American Idol where in the preliminary rounds we wheel out the bewildered to be sniggered at by multi-millionaires." Outstanding!! Great job Ricky.

  • Dope! Thanks for posting it.

  • great acting from both, genuine emotion from ricky there!

  • that was a stupid comment and i bet that you have never looked up what "incredible" really means.

  • You are are a legend...lol,more like a leg end.

  • AKA...a foot.

  • this was an amazing moment. so many home truths in his speech. i loved it and it was very moving too. this is a class piece of television and the best bit of TV by far on UK tv this year.

    atvmidlands

  • Ricky's acting shocks and amazes me. The end scene was brilliant whilst Ashley is so perfectly cast as Maggie ...it bought a lump to my throat. Hope they are both awarded for this scene....stunning.

  • I can just hear all those actors and musicians who participated in this series sitting on the edge of their armchairs and saying..."Nice One".....especially Kate Winslett who played the nun.

  • Now when anyone hears the term 'reality tv' they think of trollop like Big Brother, which shows 'reality' through fame-seeking losers seeking attention and pre-determined tasks trying to spark a reaction. Shape up.

Well done Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

  • Absolutely outstanding writing and acting.

Networks: Please listen to the man! We aren't all mindless idiots who want exploitation tv. You've managed to totally stain the name of reality television in a few short years. Reality television used to be about serious documentaries, which explored culture or events that weren't provoked by producers.

  • "E - channels Greatest cesarean's" Brilliant clip! At last, Gervais holds up a mirror at the view and dare's to ask the question... Reality T.V. is dead, choose another channel!

  • THE best acting I`ve seen! He and Ashley wipe the floor with all of those RADA hams!

  • Ricky Gervais, Perfect writing, perfect acting, inspired concept and brilliantly honest. Not only comic timing Ehh Ricky.

  • what a sppech and you werent alone chrisbhackett! Spot on Ricky!

  • I knew he was funny,

    hows that for acting?

  • I had really started to go off gervais recently, having seen fame live and noticed him popping up on various mediocre productions, i was beginning to worry that he had begun to become the stereotype he professes to detest. However I honestly think that this scene is the best television of 2007.

  • you`re right, at the end of the year a little piece of television perfection, call me a wuss, i nearly blubbed.
