Sometimes people laugh at horrible things because they don't know how else to react, doesn't necessarily mean they think it is funny. some guys aren't good at expressing, well sadness, it's not really a 'manly' thing to do in today's society, so if they're shocked by something so awful and sad they may react by laughing. or something along those lines.

I gotta ask; I haven't yet watched this film, but I understand that it isn't a film to be taken or received lightly, whatsoever, So I ask why you guys are laughing? I'm gonna guess that it's at the anticipation of the newbie's gut reaction, or, is it because of something aesthetic based, like dated filming or bad acting or what? wow Rich, watching you watch this makes me realize that "Salo" was really the first reality show! I first saw that film freshman year in the theater at St Marks. My friend and I almost cried and were so freaked out we couldn't even get on the subway and had to take a cab all the way up town even though we were broke.

the director's name was pier paolo pasolini. he was killed before this movie was ever screened. he was very anti-fascism and this movie was a metaphor of how the fascist government treats its people.

by using children it represents the innocence of the lower classes, & in this scene where they are forced to eat shit it was supprosed to represent the food italy's ppl were forced to eat during the nazi occupation.

the original book the movie is based on '120 days of sodom' is even harsher.

@myvoicecarries Seeing the fact that everything apart from the time-setting came from the book wich was written in the 1700's, I find it pretty funny for you to say its a metaphor for fascism and class strugle etc..

Its just a movie about excess, nothing more nothing less. It would have been ridiculous, inept and pretty lame for Pasolini to use the concept of 120 days only to make a point about fascism..
