Each of the actors portrays Dylan at a different stage in his life. Just because this boy is black and actually, 11 years old, it doesn't mean it has to be taken literally.

i havent seen it yet...but isnt it suppose to be a multiple phase representation of his life...so possibly it symbolizes his innocence before fame and youthful admiration for woody....but im just guessing...i mean obviously they have some reason cause neither woody or bob was black, or as you mentioned 8
