  • This is so different from the Disney one!

  • será que se eu falar em português aqui alguém traduzirá? hahaha

  • Did anybody else notice that Quasimodo said "HA!" after shouting "Sanctuary" the first time? Like he was saying "HA! Beat that suckers!"

  • both lesley anne down and demi moore from the disney cartoon co starred with swayze. if ever there was a phoebus.

  • this movie seems to give me the impression that life is hard for a girl trying to keep her virture and if she does she is shuned and treated like dirt. when really sch a one should be treated as gold with the utmost respect and honor. such a character in a true lady is rare now a days. fellow gentle ladies remain true to yourself!!! even when the pressure is on and no one believes you, you and god knows. thats all that matters. and the one worth waiting for will know too.

  • MiaCharlir101. Ik wut ur saying, but in reality its not his fault he feels bewitched. That's how they thought in those days

  • Frollo is a d***. He thinks that he has been bewitched by a witch, when he's just feeling sexual urges like a normal human being. Seriously, not everyone's perfect, not even clergymen!

  • There's a character dynamic between Quasi and Esmerelda. Quasi is tortured and outcasted for being ugly. Esme is tortured and outcasted for being beautiful. They're both blamed for something they didn't do. They were both taken advantaged of by someone they thought loved them. And they both had lettuce thrown at them.

  • why do people like frollo so much??? if he really loved her he wouldn't 1. frame her and watch her get torchered for something he did 2. try and get in her pants when she doesn't want to do it and 3. try and kill her for something she didn't do!!!!

  • why do people like frollo so much??? if he really loved her he wouldn't 1. frame her and watch her get torchered for something he did 2. try and get in her pants when she doesn't want to do it and 3. try and kill her for something she didn't do!!!! I know i'm going to get alot of hate comments but thats my opinion and i'm going to stick with it..

  • Natattackfilms.......... yeah! I saw it too...Quasi gave the crowd the French Salute....Ha!

  • i think this movie drags a little bit.

  • Poor Frollo. If a desire is repressed, it will find an unnatural outlet somewhere. It's like Dennic Miller said about the Catholic priesthood: " These guys take vows of poverty and celibacy. Think about it--no money, no chicks...EVER!! What could go wrong there?"

  • @joepeeler34 Becos they followed the act of Jesus Christ, who didn't marry...well being married/single is nothing wrong but the intention is most important. But without a woman or a family, may be more convenient serving God wholeheartedly

  • Hehe when he says "I love you," Esmeralda's like : "What...?"

  • Dark and radiant eyes... their blue...

  • Esmeralda is such a stupid twit, someone needs to slap her. FROLLO IS THE SHIT!

  • did Quasimodo just flick the entire crowed @ 6:55

  • I love Derek Jacobi in this- He is extraordinary at portraying dark, almost inconcevible characters and making them believable x

  • Shame... Frollo and Esmeralda had so much potential. :( Well, that's what fanfiction is for, right? :-D

  • Frollo is hot

  • @auroraboreale23

    lol. hot and desperate 8-P

  • Wasn't that guy at 6:11 in The Elephant Man as well? Is he Kenny Backer?

  • it would be hilarious if he dropped her , just kidding

  • Wait: "Your eyes, so dark and radiant" ? This Esme has light-coloured eyes. Watch out, Frollo: Wrong cave.

  • This scene was sure a lot more epic in the Disney version hahahaha

  • Frollo' feelings seem they are desire..yes may be that idea is true but when you read the book carefully you can understand that obsession become love and he did everything to get her but while he was doing this he was kind and never meant to hurt her. Death is the sentence, it is brutal decision but it is part of love if you can get her...she can go to hell and then may be he can get her in the hell. Hope..hope and hope..he has hope in the novel

  • Esmeralda you dim-witted, naive little girl!! Can't you see how innerly tormented and lost Frollo is?!?! Kyaah!! I wanted to smack her in the dungeon scene yeesh!!

In other words...aahh Derek Jacobi is AMAZING as Dom Claude Frollo. His face when he sees that Esmerelda is alive makes me squeal! =D

  • lol...Does she sneeze a 2:17? Or is it just me?

  • @obsessiveweirdo240 she sneezed =D

  • 2:05 what does he ask 2 do 2 Esme?? Wat does that mean?

  • @GodessGrl94 He says "Oh Esmeralda... if I could once caress you!"

To caress means "to treat with tokens of fondness, affection, or kindness (cherish)" or "to touch or stroke lightly in a loving or endearing manner". He certainly didn't ask much, poor man, but I doubt he would have stopped to light touches once he got started.

  • "SANCTUARY! SANCTUARY! HA!" 8D

  • This Frollo really brings creepy to a whole new level.

  • Anthony Hopkins ROCKS as Quasimodo. <3

  • They literally reversed the personalities of Pheobus (ass) and Frollo in the Disney version. Although, when I went to Disney world, I still had a heart attack when I saw him and screamed with joy xD

Frollo is my favorite character of all time, evil or not :3

  • @XxM00nSHADExX Same- In Paris I nearly fell over when he blew a kiss! He is amazing- So passionate, so....well....complex...

  • Frollo is an astonishingly hard character to portray- and Derek Jacobi portays him so well! He has a perfect balance of approaching insanity, passion, pure lust and love for esmerelda and desperation- this is fascinating!

  • I love his reaction when he finds out that she is alive he shude have done it when she was sleeping and q. wasn't there xxx!!! door closed xxx

  • You stupid

Yo dont cal her SATINe if you wanto F*** her !!!!!

and then say if i may ounce corece you??

    What the F***ing hell !!!!!

  • I love this part why cant esmerelda youse her head and go with frollo's offer and save her life couse w all know that phoebus doesn't love anyody !!!!!!!!!!!

What the hell frollo you go on to strong i like " may i ounce coress you ???' you stupid !!!!!!!!!! and if i was there i wold have taken the dager from frollo and staped phoebus myself and do it for free !!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the best interpretation I've ever seen.

  • @IndigoReflections HE WAS SUCH A BRAVE HUNCHBACK

  • why are esmaralda's feet so perfect after she was in "the boot"

anyway YAY QUASI!!! Diamonds are found in the weirdest places.

  • "Hellfire... dark fire... Now, gypsy, it's YOUR turn!!"

    Oh wait, wrong version. ;)

  • @FlippinBooks

Hahah this made me laugh :D Great comment :))

  • @FlippinBooks disney version is soo much better though :)

  • I am sooo happy they added the scene in the jail cell. It reminded me much of the scene in Notre Dame de Paris french musical "Frollo Visites Esmeralda" and "One Bright Morning Your Danced" I wanted to cry when i heard him make is plea...:(~<3 i love you frollo!

  • @LolitaLexi Sanc-tuary-Sanc-taury...ha! (sry that made me lol a bit) I love Anthony Hopkins sooooo much! I cant even tell it's him!

  • How ugly that they made such a show of the hanging with drums and all that.

  • I love Anthony Hopkins !! XD <3

  • I find it kinda ironic that theres actually someone standing outside the cell yet he doesn't appear to hear Frollo admitting to killing Phoebus. I mean they were yelling kinda loud.

  • @braceyfaceanimegurl it was in the dungeon, they have thick walls made of stone, they could hear the yelling but it was probally muffled to the point were they couldnt really make out the voices and what they were saying.

  • Definetly, THIS GRINGOIRE IS THE BEST ONE OF ALL!!! =3

  • love that in those days you could blame everything on Satan

  • Watching SDJ play Frollo is like watching Cadfael's evil twin. It's kind of disturbing, especially as I always thought he had a kind face.

  • "Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Ha!"

  • hahahaha gota love Anthony Hopkins! :D

  • the dude is "insanely" in love, id put him in the dictionary next to the word stalker

  • and i'd put phoebus next to the word 'asshole'

  • 1. Poor, sweet, innocent Esmeralda!

    2. I think Derek Jacobi makes a good job - not overacting, not underacting - as such villainous, but still sort of tragic monster.

  • SDJ rocks!!!!! XD

  • Quasimodo: "I gave him sanctary!"

    Yes, yes you did. Hurrah!

  • Sanctuary, not sanctary.

  • Cool, he loved her so much he framed her for murder...

  • Sanctuary! HA!

    xD He owned them

  • 2:16 Frollo totally felt her up. Pervert!

  • Poor lil feller... one more reason clergy should be allowed to marry. It doesn't help that him be a total nerd, either.

  • i can't get over how well this guy plays frollo.

  • he's fantastic!

  • i have not read the book but I am planning to soon. Is the movie simular to the book or are they really different.

  • Compared to the Disney Film, this movie is somewhat more closer to the original novel

  • This movie is fairly true to the book: some scenes do not appear. This speech of Frollo's in the dungeon is nearly word for word.

  • Esmeralda is so pretty.

  • does anyone else think that frollo is like a pityful child in this version??

  • Why yes. I do.

  • lol, thanks for replying. i just think when he tries to touch esemeralda when she rejected him it was almost like a young child have a tantrumwhen he cant have what he wants.but i guess that just shows how his love for her has made him weak, like a child^^

  • Yup.

  • ha, Love. Its not love its lust and obsession.

  • love is still a part of lust and obsession, but its not the type of love that most people would want in a relationship. he can't really be obsessed with her without feeling slight feelings of love for her, although i do agree it is mostly lust^^

  • You have read way to much twilight lolXD(jk)

Obsession never lasts. Obsession is selfish.

sex and love are two different things. You can love someone with every cell in your body without ever having sex.

In this movie(play. whatever) They do seem to make Frollo seem like he loves Esmeralda(or some feeling similar) In the book its pretty obvious its lust (=^_^=) In the end he kills her, I think that pretty much puts a damper on the relationship.

  • actually, i hate twilight and have never read it^^ one thing i have to mention is in my comment i've made a mistake , i meant to say "but its a type of love that most people WOULDN'T (not would) want in a relationship" . ^^

  • I hate twilight too n.n

  • I concur a thousands times over, RaZorXwireXbabyX! Interesting name BTW!

  • lol. Thanks! I'll take that as a complement. (razorwire used to be my name on myspace)

  • Absolutely agree with you :)

  • I think it´s complex. What Frollo feels is pure passion which is always mixed with lust Frollo may not love her as Quasimodo does, but he is deeply IN love with her. In the book you see it clearly. It´s not just lust, it´s much more than that. Saying it´s just lust, it´s almost disrespectful to the character, because he is far more complex than that . In the book, it´s clearly more than lust. Actually, the way Hugo constructed the character shows it.

  • in some editions of NdP I have also read that Hugo put himself in the character of Frollo, so he can't be so flat...

  • Yeah I agree. The way VH writes and constructs Frollo character indicates that he doesn´t wanted people to see Frollo as a villain

  • i think part of it is lust but most of it is love that has been twisted by frustration and the oppression he's always had. He wanted her so much but he knew it was wrong and against his vows so it drove him mad. xxx

  • I agree.

  • @DaniMajor You're correct. Frollo is definitely a character with depth, an individual that has thought much about life, which adds to his complexity and condition. Pheobus, on the other hand, is very simple-minded, and his feelings are mere lust. Quasimodo has the truest love for Esmerelda as he sees her, not simply as a fine piece of meat, but as a person with a good soul that was kind to him. when others weren't.

  • He's anything but a pitiful child in the book that Hugo wrote: more like a black spider that keeps hanging over this woman's head.

  • i know lol, i've read most of the book, in the book he is not pityful, but in this movie i think he is^^

  • " i would've punched a dagger into my own heart"

    WELL WHY DIDN'T YOU???!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • In the book he does rip his chest open multiple times with a dagger, just not deep enough to kill himself. When he approaches Esmeralda a couple months later, his chest is still bleeding.

  • 0.0 thats disturbingly romantic. i know its morbid but i like that, i've ordered the book and it should arrive in a few days so i should be able to read it soon. but still i look forward to reading that, i'm a big fan of tragic love and the fact that his obssession has gone so far as to self harm himself is tragic love to me^^

  • oh please tell me the gory version, i'd love to know a gory cinderella^^ oh, and the little mermaid, he changed that to. in the original she dies.

  • I kinda have a soft spot for Frollo.. This verison of him is more kinder in some ways I think.

  • Looove the "I totally knew that would happen" look on Clopin's face when Quasi came and saved her.

  • sanctuary, sanctuary, sanctuary hah. It made me laugh

  • you know, you all would be a lot healthier and better fed if you didn't waste all your food throwing it at witches....god!!!

  • sanctuary, santuary, santuary, hah- In your face.

  • This is good, but the 1939 version will always be my favorite.

  • ugly guys rock oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i love the bit at 0:34 where esmeralda turns her head to look at him just after he says 'i love you'

    it's like she's saying 'ehhh....what?'

  • Paris must not like their lettuce very much...

  • Her eyes are not dark but light--Frollo said they were dark. Anyway; Uhh...Frollo is just sick and Pheobos is a big A-hole. Uhh...I'm so disgusted, poor Esmeralda. Poor her. It was really cute when Quasi saved her and started yelling "Sanctuary!". I was like..."Yay him!" Hahaha, this is so different from the disney version -.- well, disney always changes things anyway.

  • This is coming out on DVD in March

  • REALLY?! Aaaaah, I wants!!

  • that hunchback is one bad moutha-

  • after seeing the dungeon scene i have dreams EVERY night about me being esmeralda and frollo sitting trying to rape me- it's horrible, but this is a really good movie- i'm addicted to this

  • this version is amazing!! Derek Jacobi is brilliant!!! Lesley Anne Down also does a very good job in this...she should have made more films like that...

  • 7:25 is a lot like the disney version, only the disney version was waayy more dramatic...

  • I know :D That was because it was at it's climax already.

  • Uhm, I don't get the part where Esmeralda is unconscious. Why is she? Nothing happened.

  • well she was about to die and it made her feel like....."whoa,and dizzy". since she could not handle it, she just knocked right out:)

  • She could not bare Quasimodo as he rescued her...I think...

  • makes it more dramatic to have the damsel in destress fainted so she has no idea whats happednd. its quite funny really^^

  • Frollo's reaction to the death of Esmarelda and then his face when he sees her alive. priceless. Derek Jacobi has got to be the best actor to ever portray Frollo, he really shows Frollo's love and desperation.

Frollo's not the evil villian. He's very very human.

  • quite right :)

  • @theweirdgirloverther

I love how he acts like a desperate,helpless,love-sick man. Brings out the actual reasons for all he did that lead to the whole tragedy.

  • This part makes me feel violated, it would have been more believable if somewhere in the story he raped her. I'm not saying that to be sick or anything, that's just my opinion. P.S Did Frollo ask her if her could 'caress' her?! Well did he think she was just gonna say,'Oh yeah, sure'

  • but he did try, in the book he almost succeeded and i don't know how faithful this adaptation is but one version i've seen does show that scene.

  • The beginning of this is just like "I'm a priest" and the first part of "One bright morning you danced" from the musical!

  • 'Sanctuary, ha!' translates to 'Up yours lol!'

    XD

  • Oops! Big mistake.

  • I love those gloves Claude wears

  • Sir Derek Jacobi is the greatest actor ever! I fell in love with Frollo after seeing this!

  • i like frollo better in this one he looks alot more kinder than in the disney one

  • Derek Jacobi isn't quite how I pictured Claude Frollo would look when I read the book, but his performance is dead on.

I enjoy this version of the story best, It's one of the few movies that kept loyal to the novel.

  • In the cartoon version Esmerelda is a lot tougher then she is in here.

  • true but in the cartoon version, she wasn't tortured and locked in a cold prison cell.

  • And this follows the book. Disney follows god knows what. In the book she was worse than this.

  • "Sanctuary! Ha!" lol It's like Quasi's way of saying "So long, suckers!" xD

  • I know right? haha that was pretty funny.

  • Lol, the way he says 'Ha!' after saying sanctuary is like haha f*** you!

  • Lol! That is just the right way with different words! XD

  • omg. frollo is a nutcase!

  • i prefer the disney version...she was fiesty, here she is so timid.

  • I agree that the Disney Esmeralda is a great character, but she's not exactly how Victor Hugo described her. The character in this version is a much more accurate portrayal.

  • its more realalistic. she is only supposed to be 16

  • my post was in response to thoes saying how timid she was in this one compared to disney

  • GIRLS YOU HAVE RIGHT this frollo is wow oh my god just for me

  • Derek Jacobi isn't exactly how I would picture the character of Claude Frollo, but nevertheless - his portrayal scares me as he's supposed to. Poor Esmeralda.

  • wow! this frollo is cutissimo!!!

  • sir jacobi has such beautiful eyes. only seeing them makes me want to cry and say i give myself up to you!

  • lool! agree!

  • brilliant scene, brilliant. During the lines "...but I was quite helpless, quite helpless! And I remain so." there are actual tears from Derek Jacobi! However, whoever put that wig on him deserves a good kick in the behind IMO...

  • ahaha...Yeah you´re right. He could be handsome if he didnt had that wig. No he isnt exactly how I picture frollo, but even though he has a amazing eyes. And he´s a great actor.

  • He is marvellous - I am a huge SDJ fan! This film is a waste of good actors, but this scene is sooo affecting...
