Poverty leads to higher birth rates. In a rich country with high living standard there is no real need for large familys. In non-industrilized underdeveloped societys you need large familys to cover the whole chain, grooving your own food etc. Having lots of children is crucial, you basicaly produce your own labour force to survive. In rich countrys you can live by yourself and still survive. When China and India becomes as industrilized as Europe the birth rate will go down.
