  • remember when we had an air force?

  • @mr9396 yeah ;'(

  • We probably all be flying drones in a few decade anyway?

  • I wish they would go back to the nuclear white paint job

  • @4NICK8TER1 As in on XH558? Well, I asked one of the guys in charge that. I pointed out that the Anti-flash white was the scheme for which the aircraft was built. Only a few aircraft get to guard the safety of the nation, but lots can do jack of all trade conventional bombing. The white was from a time when not only did the Govt buy 1 aircraft, FOR A SPECIFIC ROLE, It bought 3...

He said the reason for camo was Maintenance. The white would need painting a lot because it got dirty so easily.Cost

  • Thanks for the Info

  • @4NICK8TER1 The white paint was for camouflage at high altitude, useless with the advent of SAM's, looked good though ! :)

  • @MrSuniman "Anti-flash white is a brilliant white color commonly seen on United States, British and Soviet nuclear bombers.[1] The purpose of the color was to reflect some of the thermal radiation from a nuclear explosion, protecting the aircraft and its occupants" - Wikipedia

  • @4NICK8TER1 In 1955 altitude was king ! You don't use mottled green at high level. Following the Gary Power incident of 1960 low level bombing became the norm & the white colour schemes went the way of the Dodo.

Don't quote great chunks of Wiki, learn your subject !

  • @MrSuniman Wow..your a dipshit..take you nonsense else where... thank you

  • @4NICK8TER1 PMSL , If the facts are against you call the other guy names !!! Sad but typical !!

You & Wiki were made fro each other !!

  • Do a barrel roll!

  • Really, if the Comet would have worked out better, things would likely have been different. Just take solace that all planes look like crap now for economic reasons. So it's good to go out on top of the game, with dash and style! Creativity beats the hell out of econobox!

  • @Flamorgan Sorry, but I'm of an age where 'Britain' and the 'UK' were pretty much interchangeable. I did not intend any offence by leaving Shorts out of the equation. Yes, I am aware of the pioneering research into transitional flight that was done using the Shorts SC-1 [why is there not a good kit available of this?], but my gripe was with those ignorant bean-counters in Whitehall, not any particular area or maker. Again, I apologise. Blame the suits, not me!

  • BRING BACK A VULCAN II !!!

  • awesome airplane! pilot got a bollocking and told not to do it again. not because it was dangerous (it didnt stress the airframe much at all) but because he was making the fighters look bad lol

  • Honestly, before I hit "play" I was sure I would just see another example of people not knowing what "barrel roll" means... but holy crap! Strategic bomber doing a barrel roll! Awesome video.

  • Those were the days. Why not roll a dirty great bomber and see what happens?

  • I get to see XH558(The last flying Vulcan) every time you goes out from DSA......beautiful sight...........

  • was lucky enough to see the Vulcan at Farnborough a few years ago, got some good video. The thought of it doing a barrel roll is pretty scary !

  • Just imagine being able to go back in time to this particular airshow.

  • 1955: Britain was at the forefront of Aeronautical technology. Then the numbercrunchers behind their desks stuck their uninformed noses in, and bit by bit our lead was lost. BOAC's truculence lead to a fleet of Boeing 707's instead of the superior VC-10. The TSR-2, way ahead of it's time - cancelled. Consecutive useless governments killed our jets. Oh, it makes me want to cry! - And now our Harriers for the frankly useless Raptor. The BASTARDS!

  • @brianartillery Concur 100% with you. Myopic, spineless, inept politicians with no faith have devastated our once superb military aviation industry. In the 50's & 60's a massive amount of development went one, we built awesome machines like Vulcan, Lightning, Hunter & Harrier. Labour finished us off by cancelling TSR2- an act of treachery frankly. Wilson, Healey & Jenkins were an absolute disgrace. Now we do everything by consortium & are over reliant on the Yanks. Disgraceful.

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Thanks for your support - at least I'm not the only one who thinks this way! Oh, and don't get me started about the Miles supersonic jet programme [which for those who aren't aware, we basically were made to give to the Americans]...

  • @brianartillery Ah yes, the Miles M52. Yet another example of our so called, 'Special Relationship,' with the US. They deceived the British government with an offer of a joint US funded project to break the sound barrier, in return for our Top Secret research re the fully moving elevator to overcome the effects of compressibility. We handed over our documents-three weeks later, the Pentagon issued the British with the Big FO Pill and reneged on the deal. X-1? Copy of M52.

  • @brianartillery To think, we built a jet engine for the M52 to break the barrier, and the Yanks had to use rockets because they were so far behind us. It is all the more tragic the way British politicians lacking vision, frittered away our lead in jet technology. TSR 2 just makes me very angry, it was an act of treachery by Wilson, Healey & Jenkins as far as I am concerned. Labour ALWAYS screw the military. Everytime we have a Labour government, we end up with a reduced military capability.

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH : Here is a another example of the dastardly UK government in action: In the 1960's they installed a civil servant in Bonn to lobby the German government NOT to buy the E.E. Lightning. Instead, of course, the Germans ordered the unsuitable Lockheed F-104, opening up sales to all of Western Europe. E.E. could have sold ~ 800 Lightnings and changed the face of Britain's aircraft industry. I would love to have heard the backroom meetings that went on in this period.

  • @Gruntol5 That is news to me. I would like to know two things. A) What was the gain for the UK government by doing so? Seems to be a case of turkeys voting for Christmas, which puzzles me. B) What is your source for this? I have read extensively about the EE Lightning, and never have I encountered such a tale.

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH: Aviation Classics Issue 5: The English Electric Lightning

    (aviationclassics.co.uk)

“It’s interesting to reflect that NATO could have had the Lightning, instead of the much inferior F-104; so short-sighted was the Government’s attitude to the Lightning that, as was subsequently revealed, a British Government official in Bonn was instructed to actively lobby the Germans not to buy it. And why would they, if our own government was so anti-Lightning? "

    More in email to you!

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH : Have you read "Empire of the Clouds"? If not, be warned, it will make your blood boil & seethe with anger, as you read about how British politicians, BOAC & BEA bosses and "the military fools" gave away the British aircraft industry, while enjoying long and lavish lunches in the executive dining room.

  • @Gruntol5 'Empire Of The Clouds," is sat on my book shelf waiting to be read! Re Wilson, I believe in years to come, the truth will emerge about that odious man. There have been rumours circulating for years that he was influenced by the Soviets. I really would not be surprised if MI5 & MI6 possess a huge file of evidence in relation to the allegations.

  • @Gruntol5 I've read 'Empire of the Clouds', and I suggest you do so - but ensure as you work your way through it, that you are some distance from handy throwable breakables! I read it a while back, and when I'd finished, I wanted to go out and drown things. At the very least, you'll find yourself tottering round in small circles muttering: ''Those useless, useless, USELESS BASTARDS!'' It's a great read, but oh, the arrant stupidity it reveals is shocking.

  • @brianartillery: I think you are replying to the wrong person! I have read the book, which is why I made the remarks below to LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH! Thanks anyway.

  • @Gruntol5 Ah. Yes. I had noticed - but only early this [04/01/12] last evening. As I worked all through the holiday period, I was attempting to get my recommended Christmas alcohol intake up to par. This is why my reply was posted at an horrendous hour, and to the wrong person. Many apologies!

  • @brianartillery this absolutely 100% agree it was by no means all the poloticions fault either!

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH : Last summer we had a holiday in UK. We visited St. Mary's in the Scilly Isles. Harold Wilson is buried there. I felt very tempted to seek out his grave and leave some brown deposits on it, but decided not to ruin my holiday. His wife (95) still lives there. The man's name should go down in infamy.

  • @brianartillery Don't beat about the bush. Tell us what you really feel.!!!!!!

  • @brianartillery Thank you. I totally agree. Once we were flying our supersonic airliners, Concorde, state of the art planes like the Harrier and Lightnings, but now we are replacing these works of British brilliance with crappy F35's. Britain, SORT YOURSELF OUT! MAKE US PROUD TO BE BRITISH!

  • Looks more like an aileron roll rather than a barrel roll.

  • Liverpool Scottish. Two areas eptimosing all the great qualities of Great Britian.

  • @smilo996 Greetings! Just for your interest, Liverpool Scottish was an elite Territorial infantry Regt. Three battalions served with distinction in WW1. In WW2, it served as a training unit. Many of it's soldiers served in elite units such as the Commando's, Para's, LRDG & SAS. A platoon of Liverpool Jocks fought in the St. Nazairre Raid, it was the last time British troops fought in the kilt. Basil Rathbone aka Sherlock Holmes won the MC in WW1 as a Capt in LS.Leigh Mallory was a PTE!

  • Jim you are 100% correct scounging horrible twats

  • Good, sharp, steady video. Bravo.

  • Guy Gibson would have loved the Vulcan!

  • @ToonandBBfan ..but would he have loved the new name for his dog "Digger" and the code word for the successful completion of the six dam raid "Digger."

The same brigade of excruciating averageness, the precious brigade of those that chose to be insulted, the iconoclasts that reduced the UK to its present state of being overwhelmed by the multitude of underwhelming folk, betrayed by a system of acute mediocrity and applause for failure - all these stand for Digger, a proud black, loyal dog.

  • @vongollumm

It was stupid Political correctness that caused them to alter history by changing the dogs name

  • /jizz

  • I would have loved to see the in cockpit video of that!

  • when the enemy heard those engines the new they were screwed

  • Try this with a B52

  • There's a real mish mash of footage in this clip, the opening aerial view sure ain't from 1955 as you can see the Fairey Rotodyne which didn't fly till 1957 and the Vulcan taking off is a production B2 so I'm guessing this footage is from the 1958 show

Still, always nice to see Falk throwing VX770 around like an oversized fighter!

  • Brillliant plane, if only they had been kept goin like the B-52 and upgraded.

  • @daleksec245 Couldnt do it. they were running out of airframe fatigue hours. Besides, we couldnt've afforded it as we were basically skint as a nation. funny how history repeats itself isnt it ?

  • @JimforbesRitte yeah, it is now u mention it.

  • @JimforbesRitte Agree. Still, we might not operate a strategic bomber force anymore, but at least we can take solace from the fact that we featherbed our army of teenage single parents with handsome benefits & free housing. Who needs a Harrier force, or aircraft carriers when you can squander money on benefit HANDOUTS?! The DHS- reinforcing failure on a grand scale, makes me proud to be British. NOT. HMS Great Britain, dead in the water & sinking fast.........Disgusting.

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Let's not forget who did such a bad job of raising the 'army of single parents' you're talking about. The 'baby boomers' that are now into their 60s had it incredibly easy by today's standards, yet they couldn't be bothered to pass on the values that parents taught them. You can only reap what you have sown.

  • @MikeOxsmells I DO see your point. I'm a B.B, born 1950. First job at 11, horse drawn milk wagon, always worked after school, that's just how it was back then.

At school 'till 1965, then work, many jobs, six days a week.

    From 1967-1969- Army, then 1971 to 1991,- R.A.A.F.

Our two boys have NEVER signed a dole cheque, they always worked, some 'menial' jobs, but as I told them, "There is no shame in work, every dollar you earn is yours, you are the equal of any man".

  • @LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH: Sad but true. And under the Obamunist president, we are following the same path across the pond....

  • Respond to this video... corking vid, by the way ! excellent quality...
