Wow, this is really cool. Thank you so much for doing the legwork on this multi-part look at Springbank. Terrific quality info that will stand the test of time.
Ralfy, your videos are brilliant! I'm putting together a tiny distillery down here in Patagonia, Argentina and plan to make a Scotch type whisky utilizing barley and native woods to impart a slight smoke flavor. I've heard of Scotch distilleries using wine barrels from time to time. Do you have any insight as to the characteristics derived from utilizing used barrels other than bourbon, port, or sherry?
The Whisky Distillers are experimenting with all kinds of casks and wood toasting/charring. This is ongoing research where availability, cost and quality of casks is all important as is the influence on the individual nature of the spirit produced.
Good luck to you with your Distillery, and I suggest good quality ex-wine casks locally sourced and re-toasted slowly to reduce wine impact and increase wood sweetness and complexity.
Ralfy I love watching your video tours, thanks for taking time to review the independent distillers. I've just started getting serious about whiskey a year ago and have found your reviews to be indispensable as a learning resource. Will definitely be buying a bottle of Springbank (and Campbeltown Loch if I can find one here in the States) this winter.
After following the news out of Springbank from Mark at Whiskeycast I was surprised to be seeing this series until you mentioned it had been pre-recorded. The latest news out across the pond is that Springbank should begin repairs very soon and be up and running again this Spring. Please pass along support from whisky fans in the US. I too am a fan of the local boys who "do things right".

Ralfy,
I read that Peter Currie has recently left Springbank! What a shame, he was a such a great brand ambassador! Who will fill his shoes??

From one side - it's really incredible thing, that we could see the process of making whisky, but from other side the magic is dissapearing.
