the guitarist is clint strong. he replaced roy nichols who was with merle for decades, and is since deceased. he joined the band in the mid eighties after working with the strangers in an internship role for a bit. i got to meet them all at merle's silverthorn resort on lake shasta. roy nichols was as good as it gets.
We laid around in El Reno FCI laughing about this song, singin' "Turned 21 in prison doin' Zip-six without parole"! How many of us got duped into that Youth Act sentence on a promise of getting out in 6 months, and then almost every-fuckin-one of us was maxed out at 4 years! You did more time than the Title 18 standard adult sentence might have called for, for most Federal crimes!
Merle's lyrics come across as a bit reactionary at times, at least the early stuff (which is mostly what I've heard). BUT...I still believe he is the Bob Dylan of country (although I could also be persuaded that Hank is still the ultimate country singer/songwriter). I will have you know that my husband served with the 101st airborne and has the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and several commendations about how he single handedly saved his whole platoon and much needed ammo. It's been 33 years but I remember like it were yesterday getting a big stereo for Christmas in 1978. A week later, dad gave me hell for sneaking his favorite 8-track album up to my room. Dad has since passed away God rest his soul...and Im still hooked on Haggard.

merle haggerd is about as country as you can get and i am country myself i served with the 101st airborne in vietnam at a time when the war was at its worst i have seen men killed by rockets morters and gun fire but the crulest thing i ever saw was done by a doctor working at one of the largest hospitals in tulsa for more info please go to msbones 1950

I will have you know that my husband served with the 101st airborne and has the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and several commendations about how he single handedly saved his whole platoon and much needed ammo. He has more guts in his little finger than you will ever have and he didn't run and hide like I bet you did!! You sir are a joke and a disgrace to man kind and on top of that you are the only one who thinks you can sing!!!! My husband is a hero to us and our country!

Unfortunately, that's because country music has turned into pop music and the farms and tractors have largely disappeared except for huge factory farms.

It's been 33 years but I remember like it were yesterday getting a big stereo for Christmas in 1978. A week later, dad gave me hell for sneaking his favorite 8-track album up to my room. Dad has since passed away God rest his soul...and Im still hooked on Haggard.
