It was over a year ago this! I do cringe a bit when I watch it now! Although the wind was horrible that night, very very gusty and swirly. Force 7 gusting 8 according to the coast guard. The two times we capzised were both to windward simply because we were hiking hard and the wind would suddenly drop and then quickly hit the leeward side of the jib and in we went, no time to respond at all. Hence we both became wary of hking out too hard! My crew has just qualified as an RYA Instructor!
actually they did a great job that day i sail and 18 ft skiff and the helm actuall will ither powerup the rig or de power it by changing the corse of the boat before they look to depower the sail by letting it out.
Dont know if you'll take tips..(not all sailors do) but try not to grab your trapeze too much but keep playing ur sheet you can also hold on to it instead of your trapeze... It gives you a lot more balance... also, i think by looking at the water it was a gusty day.. not really sure though.. if you're not communicating let eather the foremastman or your rudder keep balance in the boat... (I prefer letting the foremastman controll the boat)
At about 3:10 when you are on a starboard tack, the crew seems to be doing a much better job hiking out than earlier in the video. I bet once he got the feel for it, you guys were screaming. Too bad you didn't have a gps to record speed.

Well it wasn't our best sailing, just a fun nightout and trying to stay upright!
