I think she is just marvellous. if you could listen in stead of watching the video, you would notice that she is a very good soprano. people who thinks she is cold and emotionless expect to see her doing big gestures. but she keeps it sobre and focused on the music. brava!!!
I think she's a dramatic coloratura. her high notes have that shimmering ring that only dramatic coloraturas possess, listen to her bel raggio and you'll see what I mean.
Comme chanteuse, je te trouve excellente et d'une fraïcheur dans cet air. J'adore ton timbre de voix. Je sais ce qu'il faut pour arriver à une pareille maîtise.
Wow such harsh words towards Ms. Massis on this post. Let's not forget she is one of the world's foremost lyric coloraturas. I'll agree that this isn't necessarily her best showing...but to label her as 'awful' is ludicrous.
I don't really care for this kind of singing (opera singing, head voice vibrito singing). But I can say that if I did like this singing, I'd say she sounds great. Good control too. But then maybe this is average for the opera world which is full of singers with great control.
sorry, but i don't think that it was the first time that she sang in public. so why should she be nervous and how do you see that she has no self-confidence?
it's incredible, how many "know it alls" there are on youtube, who think that they are able to judge about the technic of a singer, while they can't do it better. certainly almost nobody of them has studied music.
she has a beautiful voice, clear, it's seen clearly she was a little nervous, but she needs to practice more his high notes and to try to open a little more toward the sides so that she strain not so much the throat
I think her voice is great. She seemed like she was nervous, though, and the tempo just didn't help. I think that there is a lot of potention here and I expect to see better from her in the future.
I like this very much, except of course the extreme slowing down near the end. She should have worked on her speed and self-confidence, she would have been great. She seems to be to worried about what the conductor is thinking, and vice-versa. Full steam ahead, girl! Entertain your audience! Let'er rip! The conductor will follow YOU.
Like Dessay, she also rolls her Rs in the back of the throat, like in modern spoken French (the influence of Michel Dens and Mady Mesplé, who advocated "singing like you talk"), but these arias were not written in 1975, they were written in 1900, when people rolled their Rs in the front of the mouth, like in Italian and Spanish.
let's face it... there are very singers of any voice type who look great in close up when they're singing. I trained as an opera singer and was taught that everyone has a different way of making sound. Little of it is pretty, however, particularly at the far ends of the voice. But as long as we're naming names, June Anderson. Leontyne Price. My biggest problem with this is why is it so slow after about the 4:30 mark?
Okay I agree, it isn't the most exciting version in history, but here very 'healthy' sound and her superb diction is a joy to listen to. Her wide-open mouth I consider rather funny, but it is rather silly to diskwalify her because of that. Sutherlands mouth wasn't that pretty either, just like Battle or Gruberova, but the sound of these ladies...
Quel timbre magnifique, quelle diction impeccable! Oui, la robe n'est pas très jolie, pas plus que le décor d'ailleurs qui fait songer aux entrailles d'une baleine... Mais la chanteuse est divine!
This is a lesson in support.......she used her entire chest to support her light tones.....wonderful technique and an imposing lady. FINALLY, a modern soprano that does not swallow her tones.
Such an average voice. To sing this role, you at least be able to Trill. This poor child should listen to Beverly Sills sing this Aria......... This is so very average............ very Blah......... NEXT!
i agree with most of the other comments. tempo too slow, voice is yes very beautiful but moves too slow here (im sure she is much better in other roles, this isnt for her), theres just NO buildup and NO energetic climax to make this sparkling - written aria seem...incredible. its ... just NOT here. her facial expressions are boring! zzzzz. where is the emotion? no energy. some of the words were wrong too. gorgeous voice but thats about it. sorry!
Thank you so so much for this lovely recital video. There has never been a DVD released of Annick Massis in recital; so this is a rare treat. Her voice is nothing less than sublime!
Zzzzzzzzzz... sorry, I fell asleep. She has a lovely, lovely voice, but that is without a doubt the slowest version ever recorded. At what should be the climax, around 4:00, she is barely moving. I could sing it at that tempo and I'm a baritone. This really makes me appreciate great technique like Sumi Jo, Beverly Sills, Roberta Peters, Mady mesple, et al.
She would be wonderful with a real conductor, like a Nicholas McGegan or Zubin Mehta, who can get an orchestra moving. Note how she keeps looking at the conductor wondering when the orchestra is coming in. Love the dress!
She has already sung with amazing conductors! She sung at La Scala and sung La Traviata in the Met I think... She is amazing! Saw her life.. she was breathtaking!
Draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags like a dead body attached to the back of a ute. And she's not the most intelligent singer I've ever heard. It's...ok, I guess? ...No, it's almost ok, well, not really. Consistently white on top, and the col. isn't great, she can't trill, and her vibrato isn't...natural, its not a vibration in the top partials, its a wobble of the mechanism. And her high, high note was a squeak, not singing. Better luck next time, Annick Massis!
It is lovely. But I agree with the comment on tempo. Maria Callas gets through it nearly a minute faster. I think Gruberova does too. Does anyone have her version?
I have just seen her in Les Pecheurs de Perles... it's amazing! She is also so friendly and she sings amazingly good! Did you know that she made a dvd of Les Pecheurs De Perles where she sings Leila? Bravo!!
I posted on another of her "clips", but I was a "super" in a performance of "Lucia Di Lammermoor" & her Lucia was really unbelievable. She's a talented actress on top of the vioce & really was a show-stopping Lucia.
She's simply enchanting. Is this a only video of her? I know a CD set of "Matilde di Shabran" will be out in October, she sing with Juan Diego Florez, Can't wait to own it. thank you for post this.

beautiful voice and technique! only comment is that the voice seems small, but perhaps that is because she's a lyric soprano?
