Indeed Flash, your gift is deejaying. And your status is truly legendary, while your contribution to hip hop is invaluable. I wonder how it must feel to know that you're a founding father of a cultural movement that started in the Bronx and has spread world wide, moving generation after generation...
@UNITEDDJS808 i remember back in the late 80s i was about 15 and my mom bought me my first set of turntables and 2 copys of grandmaster flashes the message album i went at least 2 months on those albums me and my homis chillin on my porch rappin and me djing good times good times now its my sons turn i already got him djing and hes 6 years old its awsome
@tyler5card What a cool Mum you had!! I love that she helped you on your way. So many parents try to discourage their kids from wanting to play instruments / be in a band etc, or disapprove of the music they listen to, so big up to your Mum!! .My Mum kind of did the same for me, she bought me a guitar when I was 10yrs old even though she had very little money, & when I was 12 she bought me The Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks album cos she knew I loved it!!! So, here's to great Mums!!
I remember in HS listening to Flash on cassette tape!! and I was fromt he Bronx going to school in Manhattan. His tapes (copied and given to other friends) found it's way around the city proper. Flash was a legend in many neighborhoods back then. If you had a Flash tape, it was like Gold. LOL God Bless Grandmaster Flash and lots of memories..
Cara voce foi, é sempre sera o maior "DJ" de todos os tempos, sou do Brasil e desde que me entendo por gente ,e que aprendi a gostar de Black music, voce e o CARA!!! felicicades e va em frente .. . moust scrach for you!!!!
I think Flash is a really nice, genuine guy! He is the sort of bloke who I could chat to for ages if I met him in my local pub. His latest album (to me) ain't all that, but the old skool stuff is the bomb!!!
It really can't get any more real, or any deeper than that...I'm getting a few copies. It's nice to be around when history is made and developed right before your eyes!
hero of mine..but like they say never meet your heroes!! dj;ed with both flash and herc an they both acted like spoilt divas with an attitude.........daam that was a real shame for me..
what love about flash is that he's still out there doin his thing...saw em' few years back...stiil dope, pure class and a top notch DJ...a lot of the pioneers have fallen off, this guy is still moving forward...RESPECT
Finished this book today. It was much more than I bargained for. I expected insight on the early hip hop scene. thought i'd learn about how Flash discovered various breaks. What I got was enough food for thought to examine my own life, family, relationships, dreams, failures and successes. Big up to Flash for pushing through his struggles and sharing his experiences - good, bad and ugly.
I feel the same, just finished it last week. I didn't realize how much Sylvia/Joe Robinson screwed Flash over, fuck Sugarhill Records, et al. You must read this book, shit, own it!
Brings back memories of ... 1) Arthur Baker - Breakers Revenge 2) Hey DJ - World Famous Supreme Team 3) Request Line - Rock Master Scott and the Dynamic Three 4) Rock Box - Run DMC 5) Looking for the Perfect Beat - Africa Bambatta 6) White Lines - Grandmaster Flash 7) Beat Street - Grandmaster Melle Mel 8) Apache - Sugar Hill Gang 9) Five Minutes of Funk - Whoodini 10) Street Dancing - BreakMachine 11) Jam on it - Nucleus 12) Divine Sounds -What people do for money And mad props to Cool Herc!
Very inspirational GMF....nuthin but love for you and all you've done and still do...keep makin us groove man..i was about 12 when the Message came out and i actually listened to the words...it made such an impact on my life..the way i began to express myself and the concerns of our communities..peace bruh
i am more greatful than i could ever convey for everything you've done for so many people including myself. you are a large part of why i obcess over and create hip-hop. thank you. love is still the message of hip-hop.
grandmaster flash is a corn ball, I use to live right across him in central islip and he never showed any of us in the hood love, he is a has been and a one hit wonder!
NOW, THERE GOES A COMMENT THAT COULD GET YOU KICKED IN THE FACE! ONE HIT WONDER? i WONDER WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT: "FREEDOM" WAS A HIT, "THE MESSAGE" WAS A HIT, "THE ADVENTURES OF FLASH ON THE WHEELZ OF STEEL" WAS ANOTHER HIT; "NEW YORK, NEW YORK" WAS A HIT" "lARRY'S DANCE" WAS ANOTHER HIT, ASIDE OF HIS SOCIAL RELATIONS WITH YOU, IN THE PAST, COULD HE AT LEAST GET A THANK YOU FROM YOU FOR INVENTING THE HIP HOP ART OF DEE JAYING? MAN UP!
Inspiring heartfelt words from the man that changed the music world and my life forever...GMF was the one that introduced me to my first "True Love" the turntable and the world of cutting, scratching & mixing. Big ups to GMF for being first, and first is forever!

I don't think you understand ! The sound the average joe has in his head when he thinks of djing, was put there by this guy (amongst others)!
And even to this day, even though it might sound basic now, nobody puts it down like GrandMasterFlash !
Wo rocks the party that rocks the body.
