Actually, it is unlikely that his cigarette ignited the fumes, as it has been proven that it is impossible to light patrol or gasoline fumes by cigarette. I'm not so sure about kerosene. But being a fire investigator I can tell you that if he had fumes in the car and even attampted to light a cigarette, there would have been an explosion and a body in the car. I would guess the most likely cause here is arson.

most firefighters dont wear BA's for a car fire...in fact they find car fires pretty boring so its a whatevers thing...ive been in a semi controlled burn where the firefighters engulfed wood houses in gasoline and i put it out wearing nothing more tahn the turnouts and a hood plus goggles...
i dont get this... there was the fire extinguisher beside them but they used the water, if they use the fire extinguisher then it would take 5 sec, and the fire goes out, but with water it takes much more time, as u see :/
@megvagyimmartizenyol That fire extinguisher is no where big enough to handle that fire, I don't know why they even brought it out. It would take 20-30 to put that fire out and it would not cool the hot metal at all. Water is the best choice unless they have the capability to inject foam in the fire line, that would be the ultimate choice. Water will cool the contents down and eliminate smoke quicker and allow them to do any investigation sooner, they will have to get the VIN# for the report.

A chief off duty near here came across a vehicle fire with a person trapped. Went up to the window to reach in and died on the spot. One breath. Just one breath. They are incredible toxic.

I see two things wrong with this video just watching it once. First off, the van is a total loss already so the first guy should of took the time to put an scba on. second of all, they should not have started spraying on the driver side. it could push the fire to the building by embers and what have you, plus it adds more smoke damage to those who have their windows open. they realized that towards the end of the video and changed side of the vehicle.
dude, whats that building made of? and how far does a wet ember fly? not far. PLUS, do you know what an amber is? typically wood. cars aren't made of wood.

In my opinion you should always have the proper PPE with you. Conditions can change and its better to be prepared for the worst than not prepared at all.
Those firefighters aren't very smart. Using that ultra high pressure hose. All the fumes, smoke, soot, ash, and embers immediately were flung towards the apartment building. They probably should have aimed the hose parallel with the street. Also, should have worn respirators, I think.

i wouldnt think of going without in a situation like that. sure the senior firefighter handed the nozzle to the guy with the pack on but it wasnt long before all 3 were right up clost to the van. The smoke is toxic.

these guys are nt smart u used a fog to keep the smoke out of your face ya ok bt magnesium that is in all engine blocks and right under the gas n brake pedal which burns bright white as you can see a lil in this video. reacts crazy with water and will burn right threw your turnouts so thnk what it will do to your face.. proper ppe's at all time..and jst cuz u didnt get smoke in your face dnt mean u didnt get the rich fumes...

Well that is a dumb thing to say. "Maybe tanks but not masks?" What the hell good are tanks if you do not put the mask on except useless weight on your back. Vehicle fires are defensive fires. Not worth your life.
If this is LA they should be ashamed. Full PPE 100% time on vehicle fires. 100% of the time.
A chief off duty near here came across a vehicle fire with a person trapped. Went up to the window to reach in and died on the spot. One breath. Just one breath. They are incredible toxic.

they packed up because they were told to. But you don't need to breath air with such small amounts of smoke.
on top of that "what are good tanks if you don't put the mask on?" those guys were in the back of the truck they ALWAYS pack up. but if it was your car, would you want them to take the time to doff the are packs for the sake of someone else's criticism?

I see two things wrong with this video just watching it once. First off, the van is a total loss already so the first guy should of took the time to put an scba on. second of all, they should not have started spraying on the driver side. it could push the fire to the building by embers and what have you, plus it adds more smoke damage to those who have their windows open. they realized that towards the end of the video and changed side of the vehicle.

Those firefighters aren't very smart. Using that ultra high pressure hose. All the fumes, smoke, soot, ash, and embers immediately were flung towards the apartment building. They probably should have aimed the hose parallel with the street. Also, should have worn respirators, I think.

i wouldnt think of going without in a situation like that. sure the senior firefighter handed the nozzle to the guy with the pack on but it wasnt long before all 3 were right up clost to the van. The smoke is toxic.
