Even if a cop sprayed an offender running at him with a hammer there is no way its going to work within the 2 or 3 seconds it would take for the cop to be hit with the hammer. Even if he the cop did spray him and it hit him in the right place (unlikely) then it would probably not have worked anyway given the fact he was fueled up on booze and bzp.

its OC spray not pepper. I have been sprayed with it and it took about 4-5 seconds before i felt it. Also some people it doesn't work on at all. If someones coming at you with a hammer are you gonna put your life on the line and risk the chance your OC spray might work? It only shoots up to 3.5m and someone can cover that distance in like 1 second, your safety comes first. Why is no saying, why didn't that guy listen to the cop with the gun and not try attack him.

Obviously, police are only human, good and bad and make mistakes like everyone else. The fact they are entrusted by the general public and governnt to enforce laws (by force etc.) means their actions (good and bad) should be heavily scrutinized by several different unbiased and totally independent agencies with transparency to the general publc. no hate here. that's just messed up. also, "police" come from "us" - they aren't some outside entity. if "they" were gone, we would find ways to keep things in check (although it might be somewhat different) - or rather, being the social creatures we are, moderate ourselves (again, it may not be in the same frame of mind as now). Plus streets don't burn and filling the air will immaterial would be quite a feat. ;)

Don't do it dude. Move somewhere else. This country (north island anyway) is littered with trash and glass. The police are totally ineffective in dealing with the smallest incident. A neighbour's child was beaten by 3 local gang girls. 6 months later and several phone calls to the police, they still haven't been to find out the details of the incident. The police in this NZ only investigate crime when ther'll be a public outcry or it is of monetary benefit, or when they've nothing better to do.

If you watched closeup that night it hapened they interviewed a witness and he said that the police men who shot him went up to him stright away and on campell live witness were saying that he didnt ceck the man. The police man couldn't run ecause his job is to make the public safe. Sohe has a respnbilty to uphold. I dont know if the officer used pepper spray the spray could have been blown in the wind and gone the wrong way thn we could be dealing with a police officer dead What do you think

umm necessay??? where was the police dogs?? would that not have been a better option than a gun...1/2 hr is a bit unacceptable. the aim was to protect so the police officer shot the perpetrator so "man down" so to speak, so why was the wounded not checked asap! was it because he was considered armed and dangerous well the police officer had a loaded weapon if the shoe had been on the other foot would the officer have been seen to asap? armed and potentially dangerous also think about it!

A police dog was enroute. Things like this unfold very quickly. It was a matter of seconds so even if a police dog was there it may have been over too quick. he was killed instantly. Media reports say it was clear he was dead straight away. No point in doing cpr on a dead person. Of course a dog was a better option than a gun but not every cop has a dog but they all have access to a gun. What would you do if someone attacked you with a hammer and you feared for your life ?

How many times do we need to go down this road. What are the chances of hitting a leg when someone is running at you full noise to hit you with a hammer ? Even if the odds are on your side is a 9mm bullet to the leg going to stop that person ? No its not. So you shoot to centre mass to incapicitate the person. That means in the chest which will stop them. You obviously have never fired a pistol. They are no high powered and they are not that accurate in a high stress situation.

Next time you're playing Doom, try just shooting for an arm or a leg and see how successful you are. Police are trained to shoot for centre of mass which is the chest. Well unless you have had years of martial arts training and regularly practice takedowns of armed assailants then Id say the offender in this case would have easily clobbered you over the head with his weapon. Ive seen plenty of experienced martial arts instructors make a slight error of judement in the dojo and as a result take a hit with blunt instrument or knife and have to get stitched up. These sort of things happen in seconds. Its just not possible to get every police source to a scene for every incident. Its like going to hospital and expecting every doctor and nurse to treat you immediatly. Things get proioritised and things escelate very quickly. Its all very well for us all to pick this to bits but I think we forget the cops here only had seconds to make split decisions that effect peoples lives for ever including there own.

How effective is pepper spray or a small baton against a madman intent on killing you. Ill tell you the answer...ineffective. I think the cop did the right thing. At least he is alive he could well have got killed or seriously injured

You are correct, Non-Letheal weapons such as chemical irritants cannot stop a focussed aggressive attacker. People need to ask themselves what they would have done in that situation.

In the old days maybe. But these days cops hate rogue cops more that you and i do. THey go after them and leave no stone unturned. Ive got a mate whose a cop who tells me if they get just a sniff of a bad cop its game on and before long hes history.

This guy is shot cos he has advanced on the officer who was by his car. Look at where he is lying dead??? Why else would he be right beside the officres car?? It is unfortunate that he was shot. Pepper Spray does not work on some who are totally high. The Taser would have been useful here but the greenys in NZ don't want that, nor do they want guns. 1/ Pepper spray takes 5 to 10 seconds to work if at all. How much damage could he have caused with a hammer in 5 seconds ?
2/ Nobody was shot for smashing windows several years ago. A cop was cornered with a golfclub and after the guy was warned numberous times to stop advancing on him he was shot and unfortunatley died. Do some more research before making outrageous comments like that next time.

Yes spry hurts. But no its not instantaneous. Even if a cop sprayed an offender running at him with a hammer there is no way its going to work within the 2 or 3 seconds it would take for the cop to be hit with the hammer. Even if he the cop did spray him and it hit him in the right place (unlikely) then it would probably not have worked anyway given the fact he was fueled up on booze and bzp.

And steven wallace from waitara was not shot in the ear and he was advancing on the cop. ive read the report myself.its on the internet for anyone to read. he was fully justifed in shooting wallace. one shot hit him in the chest on in the leg. not sure where you got the "ear" story but thats wrong

its OC spray not pepper. I have been sprayed with it and it took about 4-5 seconds before i felt it. Also some people it doesn't work on at all. If someones coming at you with a hammer are you gonna put your life on the line and risk the chance your OC spray might work? It only shoots up to 3.5m and someone can cover that distance in like 1 second, your safety comes first. Why is no saying, why didn't that guy listen to the cop with the gun and not try attack him.
