  • bbc one Sherlock Holmes

  • "you squashed my pea"...XD

  • Jeremy Brett 4ever!

  • Its Basil Rathbone for me.......Jeremy Brett a close second.

I also agree with the aforementioned Google Greed.

The pompous, nauseating corporate creatures try to ruin everything, and succeed way too often. No need or desire for commercials in these old flicks.

  • well, my humble opinion is that, jeremy brett was the best holmes ever.

  • `you squashed my pea`ahahah watson :)

  • they forgot the detective conan series!

  • Jeremy Brett is the BEST Sherlock Holmes, and for me the ONLY one!

  • so it all ends at 0.47.11, then why "leave it" until 1.03.45?

  • Rathbone was entertaining in a "not trying to be cheesy, except we're being cheesy" kinda way. in my mind, Jeremy Brett was, by far, the best actor to play Holmes. Brett was a great actor, he knew the stories inside-out, and he captured Sherlock's mannerisms and demeanor more accurately than anyone else ever has or did!

  • Je l'avais en cassette!!! Je l'avais enregistré ;p je compte pas le nombre de fois que je l'ai regardé!

  • Actually Brett is mentioned by this video... Why does everybody say that he was forgotten?

For me Brett is still the best actor who has played Holmes, but Rathbone, Livanov, Whitehead and Cumberbatch are also great. But of course the original fictional detective is the best ;)

  • For me, Rathbone's & Benedict Cumberbatch's are the best

  • Correction: Irene Adler was not the only "person" who ever bested him, but the only woman he credited with doing that.

  • I've seen a couple of the films by Wotner, the one he said was the ultimate Holmes in England. He's excellent.

  • Watson: I say Holmes?

    Holmes: What?

    Watson: It's morning.

Holmes: Allow me to congratulate you on a brilliant bit of deduction.

HAHAHAHA LMAO I love Rathbone's Holmes. If only he had the scripts Brett had he would go down as the most perfect Holmes ever.

  • WHAT THE CRAP! WHERE WAS BRETT???

  • 39:14 take a look at who is playing Watson... :D

  • There has never been a duo as fascinating as Doyle's Consulting Detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Doctor John Watson. As far as the new BBC series goes, I do like it. But I don't really like the way they set the characters up. But it's still good nonetheless, I just can't compare it to classic Holmes.

  • I believe the best face of Holmes is... Jeremy Brett, over all!

  • @Darkdog i agree with you. i'm a Jeremy Brett fangirl

  • Brett was a fantastic Holmes - I like the new BBC version also

  • I'm a Cumberbitch myself, but I've always got room for some RDJ and Brett :)

  • Why do people argue about the depictions when the books are most awesome?

  • hey ppl at least sherlock is "living" on and on through the many ppl whove played him and continues to inspire ala house md etc..enjoy the one you like and have at it

  • The best Sherlock imho is Vasily Livanov. He's most authentic and impressive Holmes for me.And the most charming and good looking as well...I love him more than any British Sh.H...Then Brett and Rathbone.

  • I'd rather have ads than pay you greedy viewers.

  • im waiting for the sequel to sherlock holmes meets abbott and costello frankenstein blackenstein blacula dracula wolfman hudson and landry nixon and agnew dick and bush hitler and mussolini and tojo bach brahms beethoven and bartok the iunvisible man superman batman and robin and michelle and barack osama magillarilla gozzilla

  • Anything with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushings in it is a good day.

  • Benedict cumberbatch and Robert downey jr are the best :)

  • Basil Rathbone is by far the definitive Sherlock Holmes. I guess its all the era that one grew up in and remembers the Holms films of that era.

  • hmmm... Wasili Livanov!?

lol just cuz of russia!? dunno...... but he`s awesom Holmes))))

  • Not even mentioning the Soviet version with Vasily Livanov is simply a shame.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing as SH in the new show. Simply superb to watch.

  • The Billy Wilder film is simply awesome. Perfectly balanced between humour and suspense.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch is the best

  • Nimoy AND Shatner :O cool...

great history lesson on holmes :) <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3 X)

  • if i see anther l'oreal ad again...

    SO FUCKING ANNOYING

  • to tell you the truth i dont care who plays holmes as long as it is canon and no inverse capes or deerstalker cap and watson is not fat also no slash and no RDJ

  • @1kissbee - That sure does eliminate a lot of the video productions. :P

  • @Shifterred hence Sherlock

  • Jeremy Brett, by far, fits the part of Sherlock Holmes the most. I have read the books, seen many of the actors/episodes/movies and none of them can top him. He not only looks so much like how Sherlock is discribed in the books but also his over all actions and expressions were perfect for the great detective. I also think that Robert Downey JR did really well, but even he cannot match the magic and mastery of Jeremy Brett. The true Sherlock Holmes. Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed it so much.

  • Basil Rathbone is the standard by which I measure Sherlock Holmes actors. Jeremy Brett probably does a better job of being true to the books, but I enjoy watching Basil more. No arguments here, it's just a matter of personal taste.

  • 0:6:55 IT'S WATSON lol i know it's Doyle but how he looked or at least his face is how i pictured watson just a tad thinner and a tad taller. holmes is very tall very thin grey eyes black slicked hair

  • personally, I pictured Holmes, from the books, Somewhere between 35 or 45, with striking green eyes, dark hair, and a longer face. Timothy Dalton looks somewhat close wo what i picture Holmes.

  • @TheDylandProductions Holmes age varies throughout the series. In some he's in his mid/late 20s, some in his 50s and 60s, there's even at least one where he recounts an adventure in his early 20s. A rough DOB is usually taken as around January 1854 with many adventures taking place in the early 1880s-90s. Holmes is about 27 when he first meets Watson in A Study in Scarlet (Watson about the same), though he recounts tales to Watson dating back several years. In His Last Bow he is around 60.

  • I don't think that Holmes has ever been portrayed on film as accurately as he should of been, but I have to say that Brett got the closest :)

  • i love both basil and jeremy as sherlock holmes, i cant choose they both bring something different but beautiful :) others blahh

  • sherlock a proper legend!!

  • For me Holmes has ONLY one face - the face of Jeremy Brett.

  • Jeremy Brett forever! :) He was Sherlock Holmes.

  • Jeremy Brett forever! :)

  • Jeremy brett is the best sherlock holmes!

  • Basil Rathbone is the best Homes Ever

  • i absoulitley agree Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes i have ever seen!

  • I just love watching shows that have the soundtrack out of sync.

  • fuck you google you advertising greedy piece of shit! don't you have enough money?

  • @billybush132 The ads ensure that youtube remains a free website. Stop complaining.

  • @billybush132 they are a bunch of fucking arseholes

  • @billybush132 While an annoyance, the Google adverts are what fund this website that allows us all so see great little things like this for free and on demand.

  • @billybush132 i know this i think i was just having a momnt. lol. i left this comment 2 years ago.

  • Jeremy Brett is the best. The movie was good is worth the $7.00 my girlfriend pay for it

  • Grew up watching Jeremy Brett as Holmes. XD Rathbone was great, no doubt, but no one can top Brett for me.

Just saw the new movie tonight - and yes, it was too actiony, no doubt. HOWEVER, Downey Jr captured the essence of Holmes's genius and irascibility. I was surprised and happy. Not a master like Brett, but certainly not a discredit to the name. <333

  • Thanks for uploading this gem, Sherlock Holmes is one fiction's most iconic and popular characters and I hope the upcoming movie will be good.

  • Which Rathbone movie is the clip about Irene Adler from? I don't recall The Woman being in a Rathbone movie.

  • Comment removed

  • If you're referring to the clip where Rathbone says, "I do hope you've given 'The Woman' a soul. She had one, you know", it came from "Dressed to Kill". If memory serves, this line is near the beginning of the film, when Watson is reminiscing about The Woman as he views his recently published story, "A Scandal in Bohemia". To the best of my knowledge, Irene Adler never actually appeared in a Rathbone film (though she and her daughter were in two radio episodes), she was only mentioned.

  • Well done and very enjoyable!

  • This is an excellent documentary and shows the varied and rich history of Holmes' depictions. Each era has it own favorite Holmes and Watson. Downing's Holmes reflects modern market tastes, but if you want to see Holmes in real action read "The Speckled Band" and "Hound of the Baskervilles". The stories opened the public to improved forensic methods to fight crime and was an inspiration for many scientists and police. Scotland Yard encourages its recruits to read the stories even today..

  • I think Basil Rathbone is awesome but can i say that i like watching Brett a little more without being boo'd.

I'm a deep Jeremy Brett fan.

    I Lovey Brett

  • Sorry. I meant to give a thumbs up.

  • @Mosflow THE ONLY TROUBLE WITH BRETT IS HES TOO OVERTHETOP GAY

  • @wreehill but that's the good part of it x3

  • @Mosflow yes u r a brett fan, but please do not say that to basil cause there is basil fan!!! or shall i say brett is really horrible??

  • Muy bueno, cinco estrellas, cuando en latino? suerte.

  • Having Downey play him with interesting to say the least.

  • Sherlock Holmes is the best.

Im fairly new to watching the old movies

& episodes so this was enlightening.

    I have to say,

    Rathbone portrayed Holmes exactly like

I imagined the character to be.

I too, am doubtful about adding

Robert Downey Jr to the list.

  • I felt the same way when I heard Heath Ledger was to become The Joker.

But never underestimate a very good actor lol

  • Agreed, Rob... yet no one will top Jeremy Brett.

  • Excellent. Rathbone and Brett were both perfect for the part, even though they played the character from different angles. I think to say one is better than the other is blasphemy, both are fantastic Holmes and leave huge shoes that may never be filled.

  • I agree competely. I don't know how they are going to pull a holmes movie off. Although i'll go see it to see how good it its. I highly doubt that it will beat Brett or Rathbone

  • @Methadone4Life amen cant say it better

  • Amusing Documentary! I am a Sherlock Holmes fan.

  • I loved all of the Sherlock Holmes books..the best holmes i've seen was Jeremy Brett...and the best watson..nigel bruce..shame the two were born in different times

  • Definitely Jeremy Brett... I'm not too sure about the new sherlock holmes movie :/

  • no, best Sherlock is russian Vassili Livanov. He is more british englisman than any english speaking Sherlock. With best regards to A.C.Doyle

  • Thanks soo much for this documentary. I am a hugh sherlock holmes fan and having Christopher lee presenting the documentary is a hugh Bonus!
