Sir. You have Pronounced "NIKON" 100%/100% as defined by Expert English Linguistics. Example: The "Vowel O" in NIKON forces the "I" letter to become a "HARD "I"" NOT a Soft "I". So, your pronounciation of "NYEKON" is 100%/100% Linguistics Grammer FULLY Correct!! It is NOT any Mrs. Nickon, or a Snicker's Chocolate Bar "Neekon". It is a Genuine Scientific Digital Photographic/Video Instrument Pro-DSLR. Your Pronounciation of "NYEKON" or "NIKON" is the CORRECT ABSOLUTE Pronounciation!!!!
Comes down with it.At the end of a wedding the photos/Not what camera you have.I used a D90 for a wedding they came out great. I did have great glass. I did have a D300 but used he D90 . D700 is agreat camera but I think I will wait for a new NIKON. Thats why I have a D90 for a 2nd back up.A good lens 70-200 vr lens. will make any camera shine. I did book 2 weddings from that wedding. I was just trying out the D90 and it rocks.
@paranoid492 in my opinion , this space in between what's semi professional and professional is smaller now. d7000 is all we want. go to... freedsl r . co m remove spaces and try to get an opportunity win a Brand New Nikon D7000
i personally think the d300 is a rip off. i have the d90 and its amazing, exact same image quality as d300. yes the d300 is more rugged, with better AF and slightly faster fps, but is it really worth double the price??? plus, the d90 has some features that the d300 doesn't. if anything get a d700, that would make more sense.
The D300/300s any day of the week. I had a D200 and a D80 some time ago and the difference in build and functionality was worlds apart. I now have a D700 and a D300 and both are great cameras.
I was just wondering if I would be able to take pictures very fast one after another without have to use a special setting e.g that takes 5 pictures after another.
I want a camera that takes pictures fast at high quality. e.g not taking forever saving the picture so you have to wait until you can take another pic.
I agree with everything you're saying but my question for you is this:
Why spend the money on a D300 or D300s? Its the non-professional DX format. You say that the D300 is meant for experienced photographers, which I also agree with, but I think it acts more as a filler space for the jump from the D90 to the higher model FX-formatted cameras.
If you're going to spend $1600 on a camera (D300s), why not just go real pro and get a D700? Its a $400 difference for 100x more camera.
@wdahm519 the d300 is a lot less expensive now so that is still a good camera to get if you want the speed of a more professional camera but dont have the money for a d700, but if it comes down to the d700 and d300s then i would just jump to the d700. The only problem then is you have to pay a much larger price for good fx lenses.
I love to capture moments but don`t have any professional training.....can`t decide which 1 2 buy-nikon d90 or canon 50d.....cud u plz help me decide :)
Great review! I just bought my D90 and I'm in love. I had a Sony and worst camera ever. It look so long to shoot plus it would flash four times people would close their eyes. I invested in a much better camera. It takes great photos. D90 is worth every penny.
Still have my D90 and D700. Sold the old D300 and bought the D300s. Why? Because I will use the D300s as a backup for weddings while D700 is my main camera. The thought of the D300s having video mode with metal body frame was a no brainer. My aunt is now using my D90...she loves it. She does mostly macro stuff with it.
so this might be coming a bit late but comparing those two, wich one is better for an aviation photograph? I´m an aivd spotter and go to Airshows when i can. Mostly i worked with manual on my bridge camera so far. I don´t use any scene modes, i like to shoot with raw and got a pretty good abilty to get the right moment. I also photograph a lot in low-light, and landscape. Is the D300s worth it? because its pretty expensive. Oh and i Usually shoot RAW not Jpegs, JPEGs for sharing only.
@QQQQcon Thanks because the D300 is a massive investment. And both are good since they are APS-C and crop, wich lengthens the focal length. And trust me you usually need a lot of Focal length. So thanks for the tip. Your review is very good.
im sorry pal but you make the d90 sound like its basically for still life and landscapes,, when its a great camera for sports /all kinds of photography,, thats why its a great seller, the d90 is the best camera you can buy for £550, Its the lenses you use on your camera that can give you faster shutter speeds in low light ,by far the d300 is for people who can afford it, as its a step up from the d90,
@scoperuk1 sorry but you are wrong. the d90 is a great camera and can satisfy anyone but the d300 is a much faster camera. Its frame rate, autofocus, and buffer are much faster.
Great Video. Obviously you have taken the time to offer pros and cons to both the d90 and the d300. I started with a d50 several years ago and have progressively moved up to the d300. It was frustrating for me at first because of the manual tuning required instead of the automatic that is more user friendly. Well worth it though, images are stunning, especially deep colors. Speed is phenomenal!
My young young friend, you should look at a Canon XL2..... for years, Canon has been making a pro line of VIDEO cameras that take SLR lenses..... please dont tell people that only "DSLR" bodies can swap lenses.... it aint so. A DSLR will never compete with a Canon XL2 that has three 1/3 inch CCD chips, one CCD for each color group.
3 times 1/3 inch sensors means it's combined area is still less then that one of the D90. Thus the noise is less on a D90. That said, if you really want to create good movie footage, the xl2 is probably the better (but far more expensive) choice.
And about the lens swapping argument: i think he meant any camcorder in the same pricerange. The xl2's pricetag is not somwhere below $700.
I owned a d90 and just sold it for the d300s. Make no mistake, the 90 is a awesome camera...but the D300s build quality is far superior. The shutter button alone was worth the upgrade. Shoot a burst of pics with the 300 and you will see what I'm talking about. For someone who shoots primarly outdoors, the d300s kicks serious butt. However, if you shoot mostly indoors where dust/moisture is not a issue, I'd stick with the 90 and save the extra money for a lens.
I appreciate your videos! I went from the d80 to the d300. I didn't have a need for the HD video of the d90 or the 300s and got a great deal on a d300. I'm going to watch all your videos :)
@joshrosales007 go to menu>autofocus>live view autofcus>then select face detection or go to live view and hold on the AF button and turn the sub command dial
ive been looking at cameras...i originally took a look at the canon 7d but its hefty price and professional level ( i think) is a bit intimidating. One feature that i found interesting was that the 7d was very weather resistent. I'm planning to buy a camera for action filming.... and personal use im interested in the d90 do you think it could stand conditions on a ski mountain? i would be careful with it but do you think it would be good for faster movement and the cold?
Your review was very helpful! I'm a beginning photographer and I want to invest in a nice camera, but I don't want to waste money on features I won't use. This really broke it down for me!
Thank you so much for the review. Very detailed and explains the technical aspects as well as styles in which will allow people to make a decision on what camera to get on the type of pictures they take based on artistic view of the photographer. I have both but seem to lean on the D90 more. I like the metal durability on the D300 for outdoor shots like rock & ice climbing in severe weather conditions. Thanks again.
Thanks great review, i was advised by the people in the photography club to go for the D90 and use the extra money to buy an extra lens, flash, tripod etc, which i did. Cant wait to have a go when it gets here.
Id say it means a faster speed, shutter speeds can be altered between a fraction of a second to as long as you want if you set it to bulb mode. Faster is good for capturing the moment, and slower gets you those nice soft water shots with all the movement and low light shots without flash. Feel free to correct me if im wrong .
Great stuff! I'm still having trouble deciding between the two. I don't have alot of experience with manual controls. I need to take action photos (basketball/football) in low light or at night. I also would like it to take great portrait photos (homecoming/prom) in outdoor lighting. I'm just using the camera for light personal use, no heavy duty stuff.
This review really helped me decide. The two cameras are terrific in particular categories and the unique character of both makes the money go to the right choice. It was not the money on this, it was the particular need. Thanks for the information. Job well done!
I have a D200 and have a huge issue switching my settings with fast changing lighting for outdoor sports, plus I want the video option, should I go for the D90?
I'm actually one of those people who can't decide, but I think I'll go with the D90...One, for the pricing and two, its really similar to the D300, it's just the D300 has a tad bit more features...Which I personally don't think it's worth that much more money.
This was a great side by side comparison, I think I'll go with the D90 mainly because of the 720 HD Video and and cost factors. I am a current D60 owner looking to upgrade and keep the d60 as a secondary / backup cam. Thanks again and the music at the end cracked me up lol
If U carefully operate that With An updation with 'Red-Rock micrisystem' U can Even Shoot as A RED - camera Does ie, Even shoot movies in the aspect of 35mm fuji Film result ...Its My own personnel Result!!
Hey, I wonder if i can ask you something about d90, I am interested in buying that camera, but I am confused over which one lens should i get for the camera.I am looking for smth that allow me to zoom as well as capture great picture
Again great videos. The reason for my question is I'm not the photographer. My wife shoots and uses a D50. Has taken many classes and shoots everything in manual. Thinking of a gift for her as she tries more to do this only. And I was wondering if you think it's worth going to the 300s from the 50 or is a used 300 enough of a jump.
I really like all your videos so far thanks for posting them.
I am having bad blown highlights (overexposure of bright scenes) with the D90 and was thinking of moving to the D300 instead. I guess though the D90 suits my needs better. I just wish they'd release a firmware update to fix this very annoying problem.
thanks. would the d90 be too hard to handle for beginners? cuz i wanted to buy the d5000 but it has been called back but im going on a trip soon. thanks.
The auto modes on the D90 are REALLY nice and easy to use. Once you get a feel for the camera, you can start to creep into the manual modes which open up a lot more possibilities. But as it stands, the auto modes make this dSLR an amazing point and shoot camera for a beginner who needs time to learn.
Sure they are. But why use auto modes? In my opinion, if you don't have any basic knowledge about creative photography (which tends to use the auto modes) there is no need for getting an dslr at all.
What I was trying to say, was that in the end, it all comes down to the photographer and his ability to use his camera. A good photographer can take brilliant pictures on a average camera. A poor photographer can take awful pictures on the most high-end professional medium format camera.
People who aren't willing to threat their photographs creatively but rather takes snapshots, which also comes down to the auto modes) I don't seen any big reason for getting....
People who aren't into photography and which to begin or improving their photographs, might seriously consider getting an entry level dslr (d40,d40x and d60 for Nikon...or Canon...or Pentax).
No matter what, the Nikon D90 is a pro consumer camera which shouldn't be allowed into somebody's hands that takes his pictures in auto modes. Personally, I use my own D80 for quite advanced things.
Thanks for the review!

ive been looking at cameras...i originally took a look at the canon 7d but its hefty price and professional level ( i think) is a bit intimidating. One feature that i found interesting was that the 7d was very weather resistent. I'm planning to buy a camera for action filming.... and personal use im interested in the d90 do you think it could stand conditions on a ski mountain? i would be careful with it but do you think it would be good for faster movement and the cold?
listerfiend510 2 years ago
the d90 should be just fine, you just cant get it too wet.

it wouldnt get wet...thanks

Your review was very helpful! I'm a beginning photographer and I want to invest in a nice camera, but I don't want to waste money on features I won't use. This really broke it down for me!

You just saved me a ton of money and aggravation.
I bought the D90 and was going to upgrade to the D300 or D300s for bracketing exposure.
After seeing your comment about the auto mode I read several review, and as a beginner the D90 is more user friendly.
Some professionals even preferred it's ease of use.
I'm not saying the D90 is better, only for my "beginner" purposes.

Cant wait to have a go when it gets here.

what does it mean to have a higher shutter speed? does it mean better/stronger shutter mechanism (better shutter life)?
rajupowers 2 years ago
Id say it means a faster speed, shutter speeds can be altered between a fraction of a second to as long as you want if you set it to bulb mode. Faster is good for capturing the moment, and slower gets you those nice soft water shots with all the movement and low light shots without flash. Feel free to correct me if im wrong .

D90 Does what you need. Its perfect.

LEDAWN1313 2 years ago
This review really helped me decide. The two cameras are terrific in particular categories and the unique character of both makes the money go to the right choice. It was not the money on this, it was the particular need. Thanks for the information. Job well done!

so since your a landscape photographer... How do you earn money? Who buys your photos?
904SF 2 years ago
People buy them from my website. I dont make much but it always helps. Right now I make most of my money off of youtube through adsense.

I have a D200 and have a huge issue switching my settings with fast changing lighting for outdoor sports, plus I want the video option, should I go for the D90?
ihearthunters 2 years ago
yes I would do that
QQQQcon 2 years ago
Wow, the shots in your Flickr album are freaking gorgeous!
ihearthunters 2 years ago
or go for the D300S with HD movie if you'd like more features and faster frames per second and focusing points (51) for quick moving subjects
juniortrooperfuture 2 years ago
Thanks!
I'm actually one of those people who can't decide, but I think I'll go with the D90...One, for the pricing and two, its really similar to the D300, it's just the D300 has a tad bit more features...Which I personally don't think it's worth that much more money.
AllAmericanGuy01 2 years ago
This was a great side by side comparison, I think I'll go with the D90 mainly because of the 720 HD Video and and cost factors. I am a current D60 owner looking to upgrade and keep the d60 as a secondary / backup cam. Thanks again and the music at the end cracked me up lol
wildrover1111 2 years ago
The D300s offers video now and is only $100 more than the D300.

Great review,
What about the D90 to the D300s now. I know there are new upgrades to the 300s. What features did Nikon add from the D90 to the 300s, Is it worth it?
mothgrey 2 years ago
watch my nikon d300 vs d300s review.
QQQQcon 2 years ago
Again great videos. The reason for my question is I'm not the photographer. My wife shoots and uses a D50. Has taken many classes and shoots everything in manual. Thinking of a gift for her as she tries more to do this only. And I was wondering if you think it's worth going to the 300s from the 50 or is a used 300 enough of a jump.
I really like all your videos so far thanks for posting them.

I would get a used nikon d300

Excellent video, I think i may upgrade to the D90 now instead of the d300, from my D40 and spend the extra cash on a couple of lenses.

The D90 is just a sick camera that gives a ton of bang for your buck.
bluemystic7501 2 years ago
I am having bad blown highlights (overexposure of bright scenes) with the D90 and was thinking of moving to the D300 instead. I guess though the D90 suits my needs better. I just wish they'd release a firmware update to fix this very annoying problem.

thanks. would the d90 be too hard to handle for beginners? cuz i wanted to buy the d5000 but it has been called back but im going on a trip soon. thanks.
jessicang6 2 years ago
It is no more difficult than the nikon d5000. It should not be a problem.

thanks.

The auto modes on the D90 are REALLY nice and easy to use. Once you get a feel for the camera, you can start to creep into the manual modes which open up a lot more possibilities. But as it stands, the auto modes make this dSLR an amazing point and shoot camera for a beginner who needs time to learn.
bluemystic7501 2 years ago
Sure they are. But why use auto modes? In my opinion, if you don't have any basic knowledge about creative photography (which tends to use the auto modes) there is no need for getting an dslr at all.
ziryab92 2 years ago
I was answering jessicang6's question.
But to address what you're saying, if you can afford a dSLR as a point and shoot then go for it. They do a better job than any true P&S out there.
bluemystic7501 2 years ago
okay, sorry I didn't know.
What I was trying to say, was that in the end, it all comes down to the photographer and his ability to use his camera. A good photographer can take brilliant pictures on a average camera. A poor photographer can take awful pictures on the most high-end professional medium format camera.
People who aren't willing to threat their photographs creatively but rather takes snapshots, which also comes down to the auto modes) I don't seen any big reason for getting....
ziryab92 2 years ago
...an dslr camera.
Personally, I use my own D80 for quite advanced things.
ziryab92 2 years ago
"...shouldn't be allowed into somebody's hands that takes his pictures in auto modes" ??? Why not? Because there are cheaper alternatives?
bluemystic7501 2 years ago
than why the D90 has auto modes?
tjj2productions 2 years ago
I mean, almost every dslr camera has auto modes. They put them there, just in case.
