The duet deals with the troubles Pasquale experiences after his mock marriage with Norina who basically overturns the whole household to make Pasquale (as he does in the opening recitative) doubt the prospects of being married at an old age. Norina actually slaps Pasquale at 4:16, sending the old man into a thoroughly sorry state, while she herself suddenly understands the gravity of their game.
