  • Superb job. Captured the true feel of the Rhodes 88 w/ phase shifter just as on the recording. Chords, inversions, rhythms all perfecto. Ready to be played LIVE!

  • Very nice! It's presented in totally the wrong key in the official Dan songbook so great to fill in a few of the harmonic blanks. Thanks!

  • The section at the end of the solo when it repeats the intro chords is pure genius. They've enhanced my life so much with their incredible music.

  • Man, Steely Dan on a Rhodes. Not sure if it gets better than this!

  • You wouldn't mind telling me the exact name of the keyboard you're using would you? =D It's quite a beautiful sound.

  • @biospark64 Sure, it's a yamaha P120. However you need to run it through Logic to get that sound - it's not inbuilt, I'm afraid!

  • @logosthedestroyer Thanks a lot for letting me know though! Can you give me a brief explanation of 'Logic?'

  • @biospark64 Sure, it's called Logic Pro 8, a program from Apple. It has a lot of built-in and reprogrammable synths on there, including Fender Rhodes emulations. I'd highly recommend it!

  • @logosthedestroyer Sounds pretty cool, thanks! =D

  • Wow, man. Beautiful playing, great tone! Now get that Mark II (or whatever the hell he was using) tone from Kamakiriad and I'll really be smiling! :) Great work, man!! Keep it up!

  • can you get a similar effect with garage band?

  • I'm a rookie pianist and a huge fan of fagen. and I'm exploring the web looking for sd tutorials. so, I can say that your version of steely dan's songs are the best on the web.

  • wowww....gorgeous!!!!!!

  • Thank you. Your talent brings tears to my eyes, you have a gift.

  • haha i am the first disliker hahaha thumps up if you hate me =P

  • Man, this is sweet...I want to know what kind of keyboard this is...I want to get me..er..my daughter one...lol

  • I just had an orgasm

  • Nice Job!

  • Love this.

  • music therapy right here.

  • Man that sounds like a classic Rhodes. Beautiful. Please tutorial please.

  • @rprillman81 Cheers :) Tutorial is on its way some time in not-too-distant future.

  • @logosthedestroyer Thanks a bunch! Donald Fagen is the truth!

  • how did you achieve this sound? I know you're using logic but are you using the Rhodes sound built in with an effect from logic or what?

  • @tyleryesta1 The sound is totally derived from Logic - the only way the keyboard is affecting the sound is the varying volumes, or velocities, of the key-strokes. Hope that helps!

  • @logosthedestroyer right ok... but there is a decent rhodes sound that comes stock right?

  • is there any difference between the p 120 and the p 120s in terms of the sounds they offer?

  • very pretty

  • Beautiful, well done. Your first chord of the verses sounds interesting; I hear something like a Cmaj7 on the Steely Dan recording. :-)

  • Beautiful, well done. Your first chord of the verses sounds interesting; I think it's a Cmaj7 on the Steely Dan recording. :-)

  • Overall, really nice. that was an "interesting" arpeggio in the intro...=P might want to check those notes/timing (only 7 notes, and much faster)...heh. Other than that- 5 stars! =]

  • @superduperryane Thanks :) .. oh that's fine, I wasn't trying to ape the original - this is my own interpretation!

  • I like U man !!!!! ....

  • it's actually from apple's standard 'garageband' app.. just plug the midi cables in and off you go!!

  • the rhodes' chords on the album are actually sustained, not rhythmic.

  • you're a total idiot. if you knew music you'd know this guy IS a great musician. his rhythm is awesome. you're just jealous like a little kid. now go away and stick to golf.

  • you really are ridiculous.

this guy is a fantastic musican

and there is a LOT of rhythm involved in this song

  • That was great man I love it.

  • finally reason!

  • hey mate, do you have the partition of what you're playing ?, i'd like to train myself

  • Sorry dude there's no sheet music

  • simply beautiful

  • Hey! I sent you a video to a song by Marty Balin, Jefferson Starship, With your love. I dont know if you like this, it's not as complex as Fagan's stuff, but some nice Rhodes Riffs. Can you try to figure it out? I would appreciate it. Your videos have inspired me. Thanks!

  • Nice playing and feel, BTW I can hear the little clicks from the soundcard when you press the keys ..... latency settings too short ? ..LOL.... Have you tried the Lounge Lizard Rhodes Pluggin? Maybe we could hookup and collab on a new youtube steely cover, checkout my Steely Covers etc. Regards Appzman

  • i'd love to meet Don especially. I love his articles etc, he soundss really far out. Where you meet him?

  • I Met them at S i R Rehearsal Studio in NY'' but I'd like to hang with Donald Fagen' i know one background vocalist on the last 3 or 4 CD'S I'm gonna try ta hook it up if its possible i haven't talked to him in while so i don't if he's still with them.. the people i work with work with everybody from Michael Jackson to Broadway but when U work with Steely Dan U did something important to me , so he da M-A-N, P-E-A-C-E.

  • You Would Be helping me out tremendously if you could do a tutorial on how to play Stevie Wonder's" Rocket Love"

  • Thats awesome (I just said awesome) wish I could do that!

    Steeliy-delic!

    :)

  • Hi and greetings from the U.K.

That's a fantastic job you've done there man!

Not only are the chords voiced spot on (to my ears anyway) you also have the feel and groove of this tune on the nail without any drum track etc. Exceptional, please post more S/Dan if you get time and take care.

  • Hi, thanks! Did you know I'm in the UK too? lol. Thanks VERY much for such a nice comment. I'm guessing you're a guitar player? :)

  • mmm, lovely tone! Any chance of doing Any Major Dude (just the piano/organ part) as a personal request? ;)

  • Yeah sure I'll have to learn it first though lol! Thanks :)

  • Awesome dude! I'm a huge SD fan and you really hit it. Wow

  • Cheers! :D

  • Lots of those 7th and 9th chords (with some flat nines thrown in) plus a couple of 13ths - niiice work getting that off the original recording!!! :-) "...and drive behind the wheel" - what a wonderful message for the youth of today LOL!

  • Haha thanks yeah it took a little while! And yeah I know, perfect message! I hope they see the original intention lol

  • Great. Thanks for posting this and your other vids. My friends have said I have the best ear they've seen (heard?) but Steely Dan chords have always eluded me. Even the sheet music is a shambles of every part. You sure nailed the Rhodes part from the recording - tone and notes. Chewy phaser hahaha it was too.

  • Thanks man! Yeah I know what you mean about the sheet music, its a joke! I don't know how they get away with it honestly. As far as SD chords, I would say.. try making them more 'dense' than you would normally play them, because they tend to add a lot of alterations and extensions. Thanks again!

  • Excellent job!

  • play just what you feel.... ;) Drink scotch all night long and die behind the wheel.

  • Think it's "dine" behind the wheel.

Dynamite Rhodes sound on that rig.

  • pretty sure it's die, after all he says I want a name when I lose (I i.e. die). How uplifting mr Fagen...

  • Me no think so.

  • Why 'dine' then? The official Steely Dan site says 'die' ;)

  • I stand corrected.You're right. I checked too.

My bad. Damn! I hate being wrong. Especially about lyrics. I am a musician and doing gigs and driving home at nite I am always eating something on the road. That is what I thought they meant. Plus, DiNe-rhymes better with BehiNd. -- Die it is though. Good show.

  • No worries ;)

  • Haha I know what you mean, those early morning munchies... one of the highlights of giggig I reckon :D

  • KIller job on the tune man.

You anywhere near Boston? I could give you some gigs! You're great.

  • Just noticed your in The UK. My loss.

  • Cheers man, I wish I was near Boston, probably much more exciting than Leicester :D

  • My favorite Steely Dan song, I love how it sounds just on a rhodes, so stripped down and moody

Great job, I've been trying to learn the song on guitar

  • Ah awesome, that would sound really nice! Yeah the chords are just gorgeous on this song. Thanks!

  • Excellent. My fav Dan tune.

  • Beautiful job, mate.

  • Thanks very much Leonmpj, appreciated

  • Thanks very much Gregcast70! Really appreciated

  • What make of keyboard is that Yamaha?

  • Its a p120 but the sound is from Logic 8 Pro - I ran it through as a midi controller using the Suitcase II with 'chewy phaser' and some other mods

  • Wow, phenomenal! Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Deserving of more than the 5-Star rating I gave this performance. :) -EB

  • Woah thanks man what a compliment!Really glad you enjoyed it :)

  • very smooth sound man, and i think its the best song in the world.

i would love to jam with you. i play bass

  • Yeah man I'd love to, too! Do you really live in Algeria though? Thats a longgg way away!

  • shit sounds incredible homie! great job

  • Thanks!! :)

  • Well done, once again sir! I'm partial to a higher key but why carp? Keep up the good work.

  • Sounds great!

  • Thanks man! You have some great stuff on your channel, looking forward to having a listen!! :)

  • Thanks. I like that song so much I named my dog Deacon Blues. He's a blue heeler. He's on my channel, playing on the Texas coast.

  • It sounds bad I know but I just assumed you were Stateside owing to your level of talent!! Yep, I'm a "senior" guitar player. The usual suspects,Carlton, Ford, Lukather, Becker, Baxter, have all influenced me heavily but I also love Guthrie Govan these days too. Have always been a sucker for that Rhodes tone and those gorgeous chords and would die to play keyboards like you.Take care.

  • you can get the chords from a steely dan book

  • Well you can but they are all wrong lol... I would recommend just sitting down and listening :P
