Superb job. Captured the true feel of the Rhodes 88 w/ phase shifter just as on the recording. Chords, inversions, rhythms all perfecto. Ready to be played LIVE!
@biospark64 Sure, it's called Logic Pro 8, a program from Apple. It has a lot of built-in and reprogrammable synths on there, including Fender Rhodes emulations. I'd highly recommend it!
Wow, man. Beautiful playing, great tone! Now get that Mark II (or whatever the hell he was using) tone from Kamakiriad and I'll really be smiling! :) Great work, man!! Keep it up!
I'm a rookie pianist and a huge fan of fagen. and I'm exploring the web looking for sd tutorials. so, I can say that your version of steely dan's songs are the best on the web.
@tyleryesta1 The sound is totally derived from Logic - the only way the keyboard is affecting the sound is the varying volumes, or velocities, of the key-strokes. Hope that helps!
One of my favorite "Dan" tunes! Very nicely done!!! As I was listening, I could just hear (in my head) the vocals, horn section, and the rest of the rhythm section.
wonders why folks come in and crit artist work.and i'd bet my top dolla that they don't have shii on here. don' t keyboard" playa"hate the game.lol keep it up bro your awsome man!do you!
Overall, really nice. that was an "interesting" arpeggio in the intro...=P might want to check those notes/timing (only 7 notes, and much faster)...heh. Other than that- 5 stars! =]
Thats really great. I throughly enjoyed that. Im probably gonna watch this again so I can learn to play it, but it'd have to be on my harsher sounding Wurlitzer haha
Hey man! Thanks a lot for sharing your talents with us! I've watched this video over and over!! Great Playing! You can hear Donald Fagan's brilliance in the chords.... Can you play some more Steely Dan songs?!
you're a total idiot. if you knew music you'd know this guy IS a great musician. his rhythm is awesome. you're just jealous like a little kid. now go away and stick to golf.
Hey! I sent you a video to a song by Marty Balin, Jefferson Starship, With your love. I dont know if you like this, it's not as complex as Fagan's stuff, but some nice Rhodes Riffs. Can you try to figure it out? I would appreciate it. Your videos have inspired me. Thanks!
Nice playing and feel, BTW I can hear the little clicks from the soundcard when you press the keys ..... latency settings too short ? ..LOL.... Have you tried the Lounge Lizard Rhodes Pluggin? Maybe we could hookup and collab on a new youtube steely cover, checkout my Steely Covers etc. Regards Appzman
fucking awsome man.. im just learning piano becuase of Steely Dan. There my favorite artist still till this day. that band is unbelievably amazing. Thanks for the the video. Loved hearing it.
AnyBody who digs Steely Dan, i LIKE'' i could never ever get enough of those mind blowing cords and lyrics'' i met Donald Fagan and Walter Becker'' it was deep ' there stuff is just sick..
I Met them at S i R Rehearsal Studio in NY'' but I'd like to hang with Donald Fagen' i know one background vocalist on the last 3 or 4 CD'S I'm gonna try ta hook it up if its possible i haven't talked to him in while so i don't if he's still with them.. the people i work with work with everybody from Michael Jackson to Broadway but when U work with Steely Dan U did something important to me , so he da M-A-N, P-E-A-C-E.
Not only are the chords voiced spot on (to my ears anyway) you also have the feel and groove of this tune on the nail without any drum track etc. Exceptional, please post more S/Dan if you get time and take care.
Lots of those 7th and 9th chords (with some flat nines thrown in) plus a couple of 13ths - niiice work getting that off the original recording!!! :-) "...and drive behind the wheel" - what a wonderful message for the youth of today LOL!
Great. Thanks for posting this and your other vids. My friends have said I have the best ear they've seen (heard?) but Steely Dan chords have always eluded me. Even the sheet music is a shambles of every part. You sure nailed the Rhodes part from the recording - tone and notes. Chewy phaser hahaha it was too.
Thanks man! Yeah I know what you mean about the sheet music, its a joke! I don't know how they get away with it honestly. As far as SD chords, I would say.. try making them more 'dense' than you would normally play them, because they tend to add a lot of alterations and extensions. Thanks again!
My bad. Damn! I hate being wrong. Especially about lyrics. I am a musician and doing gigs and driving home at nite I am always eating something on the road. That is what I thought they meant. Plus, DiNe-rhymes better with BehiNd. -- Die it is though. Good show.
It sounds bad I know but I just assumed you were Stateside owing to your level of talent!! Yep, I'm a "senior" guitar player. The usual suspects,Carlton, Ford, Lukather, Becker, Baxter, have all influenced me heavily but I also love Guthrie Govan these days too. Have always been a sucker for that Rhodes tone and those gorgeous chords and would die to play keyboards like you.Take care.

Very nice! It's presented in totally the wrong key in the official Dan songbook so great to fill in a few of the harmonic blanks. Thanks!

You wouldn't mind telling me the exact name of the keyboard you're using would you? =D It's quite a beautiful sound.

@biospark64 Sure, it's a yamaha P120. However you need to run it through Logic to get that sound - it's not inbuilt, I'm afraid!

how did you achieve this sound? I know you're using logic but are you using the Rhodes sound built in with an effect from logic or what?
