Hello. I love your channel. Please have a look at this link... Can it be legal, can't it? It's not nice to look at (I can't embed the link, just search "Mountain Lion Hunting Mick Chapel )
It's really really sad to see that happening in the USA today... Could any action be taken against actions like these? I mean... these people should be hunted down!
@vaderhausen Yes, it's still legal, you can write to your state representatives and voice your opinion on the matter, please visit CatLaws*com for contact info :)
Just today a little 4 year old boy got attacked by a mountain lion in big bear and his father had to stab the puma off... Little boys face was ripped in 4-5 places but survived...
Puma concolor is a magnificent cat. It can take down prey up to about 10 times its own weight. It is about 80% efficient against its preferred prey, deer. Comments to the effect that they will eat people are pretty much wrong, although like any wild animal, they should be respected with a wide berth, giving a cat an escape route. Oragnizations such as Big Cat Rescue, Mountain Lion Foundation, Cougar Fund, and so on, deserve your support if we are to keep these apex consumers from extinction.
“Low levels of confirmed interactions coupled with exceedingly low interaction rates calls into question the validity of management decisions based on interaction reports while suggesting the perceived level of risk from cougars in residential areas disproportionally exceeds actual risk.” (University of Washington (2010) Cougar Ecology, Behavior, and Interactions with People in a Wildland-Urban Environment in Western Washington, Brian N. Kertson, Abstract)
President Theodore Roosevelt, no stranger to hunting, wrote:
“It is true, as I have said, that a cougar will follow a man; but then a weasel will sometimes do the same thing. Whatever the cougar's motive, it is certain that in the immense majority of cases there is not the slightest danger of his attacking the man he follows.” (BiblioBazaar (2009) The Roosevelt Book: Selections from the Writings of Theodore Roosevelt, p 183)
Strange how some instincts still remain heavily in humans. Whenever I watch a video like this I always seem to get a twinge at the back of my neck/shoulders, I can definitely imagine, vividly, having to defend myself from one of these big cats in the wild. To be honest it would be an honour, they're beautiful, majestic and powerful. Please keep doing the work you're doing. : )
Yeah, the people who founded my town messed up; They chased off and killed almost all of the mountain lions in the area, thus causing the coyote population to increase. So what did they do? They did the same thing to the coyotes, except the coyotes are still more common in the area than mountain lions, and now the population of deer has shot up. In other words, my town's founders royally screwed over an entire ecosystem.
@evanescencedragon Well spotted! That was Tobi a female cougars, she's 19 years old and is one of our cats we supplement with glucosamine because of her stiff joints :)
they forgot to mention that the female cougars habitat is usually a modern nightclub whereby they stock males that are half their age. i was stocked by one once. it was scary.
I'm pretty sure I saw a cougar the other day near the end of a (solo) backpacking trip. It was 200+ yards out, crossing the road I was hiking out on. I shouted, she stopped and looked at me, and then kept on walking, into the woods. She was about the same color as the cat at 0:14, and I'm pretty sure I saw a big, fat tail that reached about to the ground. I spent the remaining 2 1/2 miles of my hike constantly looking over my shoulder and thinking about what I'd do if I was on the menu ...
@BigCatRescue My teacher was checking out a spot where he was going to go elk hunting and he kept finding cougar tracks behind him, but he didn't hear or see anything.
@yutzy1 Well spotted! That is Tobi one of the oldest cougars we have, we supplement the cats that are stiff with glucosamine daily to help them out :)
3:18. The parents must have some genetic inclination to blue eye color, and probably the frequency of light, that brings out an evolved passivity. Awesome.
There's a problem with the audio on this, it seems the voice track is only on the left-side of stereo, while the music is fine. Probably didn't check-mark the stereo box during rendering in post-production.
(Just thought you should know, it's slightly annoying for ear-phone wearers)
Great video to encourage other children to learn about this species and with that knowledge contribute to preserving it in the wild. Thank you for posting it.
@koreazaz No it was a rabbit, once a week we give our cats whole prey (already dead) like rabbits to the larger cats and rats to the smaller species :)
Very informative. I live in cougar country. You will see their foot prints everywhere, but it's possible to live your entire life without actually seeing one. Hence their other name. Ghost of the Rockies.
I wonder why big cats aren't more literate then with that there hyoid bone since it's a critical difference between us and our predecessors in the language department.
They are noble animals. I was stalked by one once while climbing in the Black canyon of Gunnison. I saw the cat four times over several hours and it was closer each time. I have to admit it got me nervous.
We have a hyoid bone in our neck. I wonder why WE can't roar?
I'm serious. I'm a paramedic, and I know we have a hyoid bone. When we learning how to perform a proper cricothyrotomy, the doctor mentioned the hyoid bone as one of the ways to find the cricoid cartilage. It's below the hyoid.
@vickiormindyb The cougar kittens are Aries, Artemis and Orion they were rescued after their mum was shot and killed by a hunter, we raised them and provided them with a home for the rest of their lives :)
You are mistaken - humans CAN roar. At least human males can, especially when they step on a gooey hairball in the middle of the night. While barefoot. (;^)
@vickiormindyb About the hyoid bone, everything depends on the way it's held in the throat. If this bone is held tightly, like in our or lesser cats case, there's no way to roar. The Panthera (lions, pnthers, jaguars, tigers) can because their hyoid bone is held more loosely.
Can someone tell me what does the speaker say from 3:38 to 3:50 ? I understand she's talking about the cougar hunting and the numbers of the cougars killed, but I don't speak english well and for me she speaks to fast in that point :( Thank you very much!
They make the same noises my cat makes =) She's a bobcat/domestic cat mix. Normally I wouldn't keep a cat like her but she had been hit by a car when I found her and after taking her to the vet and taking care of her until she was healed she became just as attached to me as I was to her. She wouldn't leave when I tried to release her in the woods, so I kept her. Big cats should never be pets but honestly, she's been a great companion for 5 years now, even gets along with my other cat and my dogs
I agree with Erato -- a wonderful video, very informative for any who seek to know. The leopard & especially the Florida panther have always been my most beloved of the big cats. Thank you for doing everything you do to protect them & get the word out on their behalf. We must change the laws to truly save them.
I'm so happy BCR helps to take care of big cats that could go extincted (sorry for wrong spelling) any year. A lot of humans only care for themselves, ehich to me means killing for amusement, eating rare animals of a reason that doesn't exist and other things like polluting the whole place. Poor cats.... Really happy that you guys aren't like that :)
Awesome video, but I used to live in Nova Scotia in Canadas east coast and have heard of cougars being spotted, can courgars live in more places then just what was shown on the map?
to bad that people have to over hunt animals to the point of extinction !! we seem to be more dangerous then any animal twenty attacks on humans and 900 on cougars , now anyone can see the bigger number , thanks for sharing this video laws yes they prevent things like hunting animals but not 100 percent, knowledge however does help your cause because once you educate someone they can pass the knowledge on > its preety interesting how there so much like domestic cats.
Sorry to say, but the 'American Lion' term has already been given to Panthera Atrox, an extinct species bigger than the Sabertoothed cat and more closely related to the Jaguar. Has the name actually been used in the past by others referring to the Cougar or was it just thrown in randomly? Either way, I love cougars... and Clouded Leopards... and Jaguars... and Tigers... and... every other cat in existance. XD
Thank you so much for sharing! And the kids presenting this awesome. I really liked the kids playing a cougar and prey. I thought was cute! Now you said you would see my cats and rescues that I have done. Would you please give me a chance! =^.^=

to bad that people have to over hunt animals to the point of extinction !! we seem to be more dangerous then any animal twenty attacks on humans and 900 on cougars , now anyone can see the bigger number , thanks for sharing this video laws yes they prevent things like hunting animals but not 100 percent, knowledge however does help your cause because once you educate someone they can pass the knowledge on > its preety interesting how there so much like domestic cats.

XD
