There are far too many inaccuracies in this post to consider it legitimate. Sorry dude and nice try BUT you really need to do your homework. The Feb.24th game was not an elimination game but a playoff round game. The Americans would've played Finland regardless of the outcome of the Soviet game. Nonetheless, one of the greatest moments in sports' history and the GREATEST upset of all time.
@plusEV ya it was a stupid system...they played Finland on the Sunday and won, and Finland didn't even get a medal... weird system.....on another note, it was weird to see Romania and Norway in the Olympic hockey pool.
to be more precise, only "amateur" players were allowed. This was changed in 1986 for all Games held after 1988. It was the NHL which resisted allowing its players to compete until 1998.
Almost all of the 1980 team, if not all, came from the upper Mid West and New England. The hockey culture in those places is just about as old as in Canada and I suspect that most US NHLers are still from those areas.
ok but u got lucky and also think about now russia 3 titles in a row and they r gonna win olympic gold best team Ovechkin and the other guys there wick point is the goalie and thats it
this wasn't the first time the us used college students instead of pros. in fact pros weren't allowed to play in the olympics until years after the '80 olympics.
and i also think this song was almost made for this movie these guys i mean its almost too perfect of a song for this event if your looking back at it all, thany you Aerosmith as well
This game is a prime example of why sports is the greatest entertainment known to man.
Yeah, movies are great, but cant we all pretty much tell the ending of most of them before we even sit down?
On any given night, a sporting event can be historic, like this game, and anything can happen.
This specific game was more than sports, it was theatre, and unbelievably inspirational. Everytime I see Brooks yell & raise his fist after the 3rd goal, I get goosebumps.
LightningJanitorial you couldn't have expressed my thoughts much better than you did. Herb Brooks believed that this country should be the best at everything, including hockey.
The way the world is today I don't think this kind of moment is possible in our country any longer.
Herb Brooks is/was a Great American and created the single greatest sports moment in our nations history.
Coaches out there, make sure your players skate lots of Herbies. USA, USA
i loved this game, and the movie they made... but this was not the 1st time the soviets were defeated.... Canada had beaten them in the 72 Summit Series
This is one of those "where were you when?" moments; I didn't even like hockey--but I was glued to the set during this game. The gold metal game the next day was Appointment TV for me.
Uhm...this wasn't the first time we used non NHL player. The USA did not use NHL players in the Olympics until 1998.
As for the medal round system, the top two teams from each pool played the top two teams from the other pool. Points scored in the round robin carried over to the medal round except that points scored against teams not advancing were dropped. It was not elimination like it is now, it was simply another round robin.
I think you guys are just a bit confused that wasnt a round robin finland and sweden played with finland winning and then ussr and usa played with usa winning which leaves usa and finland playing for the gold and silver and the ussr and sweden playing for bronze
it wasnt a semi final game, the USA was going to play Finland at 11 AM SUnday morning no matter what. This was a medal round which means it was round robin AND the game could have ended in a 3-3 tie if Eruzione hadn't scored. Remember, the Soviets won Silver that year
yes it was, the USA carried over their tie from Sweeden so that gave them 1 point, and the soviets carried over their 2 points from a win from finland. The Olympics back then didn't have overtime for hockey, so they didn't have a tournament like we think of it. They started out with round robin games in a pool, then round robin games in a medal round. If you watch the 3rd pd when the USA has the lead, they explain everything in graphics. Thats how the soviets won silver this year
@PENS68 I'm not sure I'd agree with that. Was it "one" of the greatest? Yes, unless you played hockey for the old Soviet Union. However, I can think of many others, including the 2004 ALCS, when the Boston Red Sox pulled off the greatest comeback in sports history to beat the Yankees after trailing 3 games to none!
@DeedsResearcher only in Boston people would think that, you could say Denver nuggets beating the Supersonics years ago 1 vs 8 seed was bigger. But this was college kidsvs pro's so boston vs ny is not even great is just good thats all
@golffreak68 Not sure I'd agree with you on this one. Until the 2004 ALCs, no major league baseball team had EVER come back from trailing 3-0 to win a playoff series. EVER! Of course, there are those who might say the Yankees choked (I would not disagree!) However, as a Red Sox fan, I say it was the greatest COMEBACK of all time, a testimony to a team that ran and hit, and NEVER quit.
@DeedsResearcher again your talkin as a sox's fan anyone of any team could say that and find a game or series of that nature. But this was college kids vs pros big difference.I could myself say about the Packers winning the superbowl last year was when they had 15 players on ir.The best record in nfl history for a team with that many players on ir was 5-11 pack went 10-6 and have a ring so anyone can find something but your sox not even close to this
@golffreak68 You don't seem to understand. I didn't say Team USA was not a great sports moment. It sure was! But to say "Best EVER"? The Red Sox comeback in the 2004 ALCS, however, was undoubtedly the greatest COMEBACK ever. They literally came back from their coffins in that series. But since you're a young man, I don't really expect you to understand all of this. (lol)
Heck, there are even some people who think golf is athletics! You can't get much more wrong than that! lol
@DeedsResearcher i totally disagree any team can beat someone in baseball 4 games in a row not much of accomplishment, i even told that too big Pappi when i met him a few times, he has a house on the golf course i play at just outside of Green Bay,his wife is from this area , he played minor league ball in Appleton. Your a funny guy and some people think your right but probably live in boston lol. Its not the greatest far from it if it was maybe it would've been voted otherwise correct?
@golffreak68 But the Sox were dead after losing Game 3 by a 19-8 score, and trailing going into the 9th inning of Game 4, with Mariano Rivera on the mound...arguably the greatest closer in our generation. Then, a stolen base, Boston tied it up in the 9th, and Big Papi won it with his titanic homer. But they still trailed 3-1, and after winning game 5, still had to go to NY and win 2 on the road. Tough to do versus a great team. But they did it, in grand fashion! And they swept the World Series!
@DeedsResearcher in your mind, just another world series or alcs again (yawn) if the yans were gr8 they would win that so it was nothin. not even in top 10 my friend so get over it already
very good compilation. A small error at the beginning though. This wasn't the first time the USA used college players in the Olympics. They always used amateur athletes in the Olympics. It wasn't until after these games that the USA changed the rules to let pros play.
Fact is.. the "unbeatable" were beaten by an amazing group of young men from the USA.. they had the spirit, the will and arguably one of the best coaches ever.. you have to respect that. Nice video. :)
Truly amazing. This is what the country is missing nowadays: heart.
We have lost our spirit, our will to fight that makes us so special. That will to stand up and face our challenges got us through the Revolution, it got us through the Civil War, World War II, and even this hockey game.
Hopefully we will rediscover the American soul of the 40s, 80s, and 1700s soon.
People don't typically like to hear someone cry "foul" 29 years after the fact. Perhaps you should point your bitterness toward your own team that forgot how to play defense at the end of their game against the Americans. Had they done so, there would be no need for you to bitch about a bunch of excited kids leaving the bench 3 seconds early to celebrate the biggest upset in hockey history.
what is everyone's obsession with putting music into videos that do not need it! Yes, finally, Aerosmith and the greatest sports moment in USA history...exactly what I was looking for.
the miracle wasnt all against the russians against finland 3 goals in final period thats big and against the russians it was captain mike eruzione that scored the winning goal that added to the drama because he was captain
still before the olympics russia played the nhl allstars and crushed them like 8-0. these were just kids playing 30 year old men. also the russians were raised from birth to play hockey since they are a commnist country
do you know what communism means? the russian players being trained to play hockey since a very young age has nothing to do with the country being communist. :/
hey, you took a love to this team when so many people go after fake professional idiots. I commend you for trying your best to love "real" atheletes that chase real dreams, dreams of legendary status
for players, the hard training&hardships they go through their lives to be the best of the best, physically&mentally, has nothing to do with politics;it was one team against the other, not USSR against USA;the boys on both sides did their best, played well&no doubt this match is one of the best matches in Olympics history;lets play politics somewhere else, like UN or in media blogs;sportsmen play sports for the love of the sports&simply for better future, earning or for family, not for politics,i think
The USSR had not lost an Olympic hockey game since 1960 (20 years), and this was considered by many to be the greatest team to ever wear a hockey uniform. They had crushed the NHL All-Stars 6-0 in New York earlier in the year, and they beat the USA 10-3 in an exhibition game. The Russians had been playing together for at least 8 years, and the USA was a bunch of college kids who had been playing together for 6 months. The miracle is that the USA beat the best team to ever play hockey.
The United States was in a deep funk after the Vietnam debacle and inflation had taken a hold on our economy to the tune of double digit interest rates at the banks. We, as a nation, looked as if we would be in trouble for a good long while. These kids came along at just the right time for the U.S. What really was just an exhibition between two countries turned into an inspirational whirlwind for the U.S. Hope, pride and dignity were restored due to these kids.
FUCK YOU SolntsaSvet! You're a bitch!!! Maybe the rest of the world should take pride in themselves and their heritage. Work harder and sacrifice a little more and your country could be as great as ours!!! USA=greatest country in the world! Solntsa Svet, France, etc..=coward ass pieces of crap!
it's wasn't the year after this that they started using NHL players.....it was a long time after this that NHL players were used for the first time(1998).
look hos talking.. commi? youre the one who lives in the contry that still have the death-sentence... youre the one who lives in the country were people knows were iraq is.. even though your fellow citizens are taking bullets there.. not talking about you in particular.. fucking world police.. wake up!
The reason USSR was so good was because the their team was formed with men that on the paper all were in the army... but didnt do much else than playing hockey all day long.. so thats how became so good
I was 11 yrs old and riveted to the screen for these games. At that time, the tension between US and USSR was what made this such a big deal. It was a real statement. That Soviet team was incredible. Ive never experienced a sports moment that even comes close to that feeling.
I was only born in 1980 (sept) but I wish I was able to see it on tv. I have the game on tape and to this day, when I watch it...I get all nervous and I get chocked up at the end of the game. The Olympics will NEVER be this good again.
Great tribute...but one flaw...the USA had NEVER used NHL players prior to 1980. "Professionals" weren't allowed in the Olympics until MANY years later.
Communists would dislike this, but Americans would love this.

The reason USSR was so good was because the their team was formed with men that on the paper all were in the army... but didnt do much else than playing hockey all day long.. so thats how became so good

it was annoying how in the movie they amde the russians bigger then they were in real life. another ploy to make america seem better.
MIMICKINGDOM3 4 years ago
I was 11 yrs old and riveted to the screen for these games. At that time, the tension between US and USSR was what made this such a big deal. It was a real statement. That Soviet team was incredible. Ive never experienced a sports moment that even comes close to that feeling.

Actually, 2 flaws, the game at Madison Square Garden was 10-3, not 10-2
JTZissman 4 years ago
I was only born in 1980 (sept) but I wish I was able to see it on tv. I have the game on tape and to this day, when I watch it...I get all nervous and I get chocked up at the end of the game. The Olympics will NEVER be this good again.

Great tribute...but one flaw...the USA had NEVER used NHL players prior to 1980. "Professionals" weren't allowed in the Olympics until MANY years later.
