i take a tooth pick and i take 1/2 a grape... they get there water from there + nutrition that insects dont have...
PS: I have 6 mantis types and they all will eat from the grape after you "LIGHTLY" tap there mouth with the juicy part. You ill have to repeat this alot of times b4 some HYPER MANTIS run or jump off...
Hey!!! Im going to be a mommy of 5 oothecas in a week :D Im super excited and wow... all your videos are incredibly helpfull so far. :) Im getting 2 oothecas of acontista concinna, 2 of sphodromantis lineola and 1 of musonia surinama.. any tips???
That is awesome!!! Thank you very much!, I already bought a bunch of cases for them :P I live in Mexico atm so the species I got are considered "exotic"
She's lovely! I've never seen a mantis drinking this close. I just got my first Chinese mantis nymph yesterday, I can't wait until he gets big like yours.
I believe all mantids need water. People who say they get plenty of water from their food don't know waht they're talking about. When a mantis starts licking the sweat off your finger, you know they're thirsty!
I used to give my mantis water off of my finger or let her drink it straight from a faucet. If you can maneuver her correctly so she can lean over and drink from it, it's a very adorable sight to watch. ^_^

thx 4 the interesting tip.
sigma1920 2 years ago
yes, just a Grape. Cut in 1/2, lightly squeze then hold on a tooth pic..
x6h0ztx 2 years ago
what you cant just have a water dish?
MightySunTzu 2 years ago
thats a good idea!
thanx 4 the tip.
sorry about my late reply....
sigma1920 2 years ago
No having a water dish can be potienally fatal especially for the little ones, the best thing is to have a damp towel.

hi, ur welcome.
im afraid i cannot help u very much cuz my experience is limited to japanese native mantid species.
just make sure to close a lid of jar/tank, or they will cause a biohazard, spreading all over ur room. lol
good luck!
btw, im gonna release some vids about the mantid explosion from oothecae of Carrhotus xanthogramma.
they hatched in the morning a few days ago! :)

good luck and take good care of him!
to tell u the truth, i have never succeeded in rearing mantis nymphs....
i always could not provide enough small bugs for their meal.
sigma1920 3 years ago
Aww, that's too bad. Where I live, we have many, many small bugs. It shouldn't be a problem for me, lol.
m4dleprechaun 3 years ago
AAAW! tht is so adorable! i will have to try this with my mantis!

ya, she was miss photogenic.

darthnutcase 4 years ago
very nice idea, are mantids easy to handle? i just brought one and wondering wether they are easy to hold
darthnutcase 4 years ago
no difficulties to handle, though my rearing experiences are limited only to adult stage.
their forelegs cannot reach you if you hold the thorax near armpits from behind.
say hello to ur mantid and good luck!
don't forget to take videos of its growing and post at youtube!

Thank you so much for your feedback.
Hmm, it looks more and more controversial and confusing.
I was once told by an experienced breeder that mantis will have lose bowels or vomit if you give it excessive water.
Please share the video, if you have, of your mantis drinking water straight from a faucet!!
I was bitten by mantis when I gave her water droplet off my finger....
sigma1920 4 years ago
rly??? i never knew u have to give water to mantises
adrianchen19888 4 years ago
thanks for watching.
well, u don't have to necessarily.
some breeders in jpn like to feed mantis water and some don't at all.
maybe it depends on which species u have.
african desert mantises need not water, i guess.
