  • Good song but I prefer "I Will Survive" by Arrival

  • This is great & so is Dyan Birch but why wasn't the Terry Reid original a hit??

  • Does ANYBODY out there in Youtube world have ANY idea whatsoever what became of Don Hume, the original bass player with Arrival? I've tried to Google him etc., and can't come up with anything!! Cheers

  • I first heard this song on a "Top of the Pops" cover album. (Volume 9 for the Nerds!!!)Can't believe that those cover albums were so close to the originals. Grat song - happy days........

  • I have been trying to find this for years thanx for posting it

  • A few notes from this track have been going through my head all week. In the middle of last night I realised it was 'Friends' - It ain't available anywhere online to buy that I can find, so thanks for posting it on here!

By the way 'written by' - Terry Reid as in 'Superlungs' Terry Reid??

  • These guys put Girls Alloud the Saturdays and all the rubbish we have to put up with these days to shame,. I saw this group live and they were every bit as good on stage as in the studio. Dyan was a fantastic singer.

  • @cavern65 girlsaloud and music should never be put inthe same sentence

  • @cavern65 girlsaloud and music just dont equate

  • any chance of a legal mp3 download

  • Great song. Anyone got an mp3 or CD of it?

  • @Nanafifi1 Fantastic. I've been wanting to get a recoding of this for thirty years! Brilliant just to hear it again.

  • @Nanafifi1 yes that is correct frank collins has been seen in the studio remastering :)

  • This song and 'United we stand' (Brotherhood of Man) both great songs !

  • We had just moved down to London from the north. Hubby got job working in West End. Life was sweet and we had friends that lived by the river. Now - still together and retired!!! Thisjust reminds me of those lovely days when we were young.

  • I noticed this was 'overlooked' on Pick of the Pops yesterday on BBC Radio 2. Utterly disgraceful.

  • I remeber my time 45 yers ago.

It was a very good time.

  • I always thought one line stated: "taking pot after dinner."

  • @deansgatedora I believe in the original version written by Terry Reid it was taking pot after dinner, but the words had to be changed for commercial reasons.

  • friends ils sont ou au fait ,? Peut etre "lost in translation" lol

  • Another Scouse band the home of Popular Music, yet Wikipedia describe these as being a "London band". I didn't realise if 5 of the band are from Liverpool that counts for being a "London" band!!???

  • had a weekend pop show over here in Australia that came out of melbourne, called uptight. This was the juke box jury hit prediction, one week. One jury member said ..yes a social comment song, the others nodded and said yes a social comment song. They all looked knowingly at each other. But now 40 yrs later, I ask...what the stuff is a social comment song?????

  • I've loved this for 40 years, can't get C.D. or download any where. Can anyone help?(I'm been cheeky, Terry Reid's version version too).

  • @DBFB311253 did you manage to get a copy cd of this great tune ?

  • @gazzaj22

not yet I'm afraid but if you know where I can get it please let me know.

    Many thanks for asking.

  • listening to this when I was 19; we all thought we were cool and immortal and listening to it again 40 years later I feel all nostalgic and realise of course we weren't!

  • @quaich14 Wisdom, is it painfull or other?

  • Oh well, I'll find it on the iplayer.

Ironically enough, Dale Winton played 'I Will Survive' on Pick of the Pops later that day.

I think 'Friends' can only have been released at the very end of 1969 to have found a place on the show.

  • Brian Matthews will be playing this GREAT track on next weeks Sounds of the sixties

    5th June !!

  • @schuller51 and so he did marvellous stuff - it took me back to when I was 19 and we all thought this song was soooooo cooool it was a time when we all thought we were immortal.

  • @quaich14 ..,glad you listened?........,it sounded great. !

  • An outstanding tune!

I believe it was in the UK charts about this time 40 years ago,

  • You're right, it reached number 8 in early 1970

  • I love this song it's a shame it's not as popular and well remembered like it should be though. I especially love the abrupt ending.

  • Wow, i'd forgotten that it was the incredible Terry Reid who had written it. Just can't explain how much i LOVE this song...so simple but so effective. Get a cosy feeling from it. I recall Tony Blackburn playing it at 8 o'clock in the morning together with Mary Hopkins "Temma Harbour".

  • Another 1970s classic anthem song.I like it a lot.

  • One of the best songs ever.

  • I Just thought i'd share that the first time i heard this, was on a juke box in the "Top Alex" pub Southend on sea, i was with 2 good friends!

  • I'm not very clever with Youtube (old age) so I'm don't know who will have posted the album cover that goes with Friends etc., but the flip slip is Don't TURN his Love Away not TAKE. Just thought I'd share this with anyone who's interested!

  • Nanafifi1- I didn't post this song clip, but do I enjoy pointing our that the error on this b-side's printed wording was UK Decca's. The label, in their usual blundering way (they actually turned down The Beatles in 1963) simply printed up the wrong title. The Japanese pressing of this record, I'm giddy to add, was correctly worded.

  • I've been searching for this song for years. A lot of good memories. Now that I have the vinyl record, can anyone tell me where to find the lyrics?

  • How right you are. Well said!

  • wonderful song cant believe its on u tube along with i will survive pity no videos

  • Top Drawer.

  • "(Let my life be your) love song" by Arrival is on youtube now.

  • Obviously a popular track - yet not available on CD. The music companies don;t deserve our business.

  • Does anyone know where I can get this track (and I will survive) as an MP3 have searched but cannot find

  • Its been more than half a lifetime since I heard this - used to have it on a Decca 'World of Hits' (vol.4 as I recall the white one) A great, great song. Up there with Junior Campbell 'Hallelujah Freedom' This has made my day - bless you

  • I also wish the TOTP footage was available, as this is what sticks in my mind, along with this excellent song which I haven't heard right through since the early 70's.

Must have been only 15 myself when I first saw Arrival on TOTP. If my memory serves me well, there were two rather attractive women in the band. Where are they now I wonder?

  • There are computer programmes available which allow you to record any audio you can listen to on your computer...like this, for example.

Mac users can get Audio Hijack Pro. It's cheap and works great. Dunno what's available for Windows but there's got to be something.

  • Great post!!! Anyone have any footage of Arrival at the Isle Of Wight 1970? There must be some clips out there somewhere? What about Top Of The Pops?

  • Funky Frieda! You are wonderful for giving this to us. This takes me back to chilly winter mornings in London going to school and cosy evenings by the fire. Great song!

  • takes me back to my first love Maura Hackett still makes the hairs on my neck tingle quality by Boscofog

  • Great song, excellent delivery. And Dyan....well,everyone sang well, but she fuelled one 15 yr old's fantasies.Still very fit!Wish the TOTP footage was available.

  • One of the best

  • One of the best pop songs ever! A mighty song.

  • What a GREAT old song this is, it ages perfectly and brings back many happy memories of a miss-spent youth,.. Thank,s.

  • What a fantastic song, Terry Reid is a bona fida genius in my book. Arrival a group well ahead of their time. A beautiful combination.

  • you said it all planetmoon. memories of 4th form!

  • dyan birch went on to sing with kokomo, as has been previously stated.Kokomo used to be Joe Cocker,s grease band, & you can

  • Just dug the old vinyl album out - no wonder I can't find her name on any of the song credits!

    Similar soulful voice though.

Better check my facts on the net next time...

  • Incidentally, Chicken Shack released one of my all time favourites called I'd Rather Go Blind and it's on youtube if you fancy giving it a twirl.

  • Try the original of 'I'd rather go blind', by Etta James

  • awesome

  • Haven't heard this for years.

Still sounds great - Christine Perfect/McVee before her Fleetwood Mac adventures.

    Fantastic voice.

  • Sorry my friend you are incorrect. The lead singer here is Dyan Birch who went on to form Kokomo with other band members. Christine Perfect was with a band called Chicken Shack prior to Fleetwood Mac.

  • Agreed, I think the other lady was "Carol". Saw them in "Wolves" in early 70's I guess.

  • You might be interested in the private party performances by Arrival's Frank, Dy and Paddy, with members of the later Kokomo, from May this year, one of the vids being 'I Can Understand It.'

Also, In other vids, Frank talks about his time with Arrival, Kokomo, and beyond.

    best wishes :)

  • I've searched everywhere for this record. Thank God for You Tube and thank God for people with good taste in music. Those were the days . . .

  • This is one of my favourite tracks. Many thanks for posting. Its lovely to hear it again. So many happy memories.

  • Hi Please, does anyone have the video of The Arrival on Top of the Pops! Thank you.

  • Could I have a video of The Arrival singing "Friend" back in the 60's please. I cannot remember what they looked like but I do remember there were 2 girls and 4 blokes in the band and they did not play any intruments apart from one of the girl played a tamborine. Thank you

  • Hah!I've looked for this band for ages-mistakenly typing "I'll Survive" , instead of "I Will..." Thank you.I wonder if anyone has a clip of them on U.K. Top Of The Pops.

  • Wow - great tune! I think my band played with this group at Expo 70 in Osaka, Japan sometime in August I believe. They headlined along with some popular GS bands and one Filipino band. We partied with them at the hotel we stayed at. Fantastic voices, they sang all the time but I was too intimidated to join in. They gave me a band postcard. They said they got booked at the Expo because they had a #1 hit in the UK at the time. Fun memories...Thanks a bunch for posting!

  • Check out the private performance vids here by Arrival's Frank, Dy and Paddy, with members of the later Kokomo, from May this year, one of the vids being 'I Can Understand It.'

Also, In other vids, Frank talks about his time with Arrival, Kokomo, and beyond, and I think Japan.
