Just wanted to make some corrections here for those who are not familiar with Guam... Guam is not an Independent Country, but a U.S Territory,so this is actually the Territorial Anthem.
The National Anthem for Guam is the Star Spangled Banner, just like the rest of America.
"National Anthem" is not the right meaning of "Fanoghe Chamoru". The right meaning of "Fanoghe Chamoru" is "Stand ye Guamanians", not "National Anthem".
words that is also use in Filipinas: langit-heaven,lugar-place,kanta-sing,isla-island,todo-all,para-for,gloria-glory,onra,tiempo-time,bendisyon-blessing,kontra-against,piligro-peril.
most of the chamarro lyrics are words of spanish origin. similar to filipino languages, many Spanish words mixed in with the native languages. same thing happened in latin america with the native indians and their languages. mexican indians brought to guam during the spanish era had influence on the Chamorro language. Some chamorro words can find their origins in the aztec, zapotec, and mayan language.
Do you know where I can find the lyrics, maybe even an MP3 of the song? I'm taking a History of Guam class at UOG right now, and that would be real cool to study.
That's because we are linguistcally related and most of the words you pointed out are Spanish loanwords. Both Guam and the Philippines were colonized by Spain.
That's because we are linguistcally related and most of the words you pointed out are Spanish loanwords. Both Guam and the Philippines were colonized by Spain.
@ton0824 and @zzahier Well actually, Guam was a Spanish colony way before WWII, I don't believe that the anthem was inspired, and I believe that also the Spanish was in the Phillipines, there are alot of words in both the Chamorro and languages of the Phillipines that are in the Spanish language. That is why there are matching words in both languages.
@ton0824 Well it's cuz both Philippines and Guam both have the adaption of Spanish language, so basically it's the same reason why both places has that. Both places were and used to be owned by Espana.... if I got my history right.

Guåhån is the Chamorro word for Guam.
Most people will tell you to say Guam if you're speaking in English, but if you are speaking in Chamorro, you say Guåhån.
gadao01 3 years ago
Yes, it's pronounced very similarly to that, but you have to have the two dots over the u, for the gwa sound.
