And Metallica was able to, without radio airplay, gain a huge fanbase and sell a lot of records. "After And Justice" for All was released and right as The Black Album was being released Metallica were at their height as the mainstream was in to them and they still had "cred" with the Metalheads.

Theirstuff was never played on the radio at all. Metallica actually gained their popularity throughout the 80's without radio support and never made a music video for MTV till 88 with "One". They did it through touring relentlessly. Sure, they became one of the biggest bands in the world in the 90's, but they earned it.
