  • Just shut the fuck up and play!! I have eyes i can see how you're playing it!

  • Hey bro you need a capo on first fret ^^

  • Sorry dude, but your playing this all wrong. The intro and the solo aren't played like that.

  • Gally, thanks for the video. I really appreciate it. I don't know about all these folks talking about the right keys or whatever. I just appreciated learning how the strumming/picking/or whatever it's called works. Keep making videos. Ignore naysayers.

  • Standard tuning with a capo on the first fret is why it is sounding different.

    good vid though.

  • My dad just got me an Epiphone Hummingbird acoustic guitar for my birthday. I just found your video. Im extremely basic so far and hopefuly your guidance will help me to pick up this song. I sing country music, mostly Patsy Cline and stuff like that but would love to sing sing song and hopefully play it as well. I got a few vids of myself on youtube. Thanks for the video. Wish me luck! LOL

  • for a better sound 2nd fret on A three times, then two times on d 1st fret, then finish with low e 2nd fret

  • just a tip

its pronounced Haw-Keen Fee-Nix its an odd name i admit though

    Joaquin Phoenix

  • Man very clear, concise for beginners. Appreciate the time to explain the strumming, just takes a little practice now.

  • It's pronounced "Wa-keen Feenix"

  • one of the best non luther lessons I've seen. Thanks for this

  • hey bro just so you know its a capo on the first i believe

  • @LastDiscrimination

yay thats right. but nice lesson anyways

  • Thanks for taking the time man, was able to get started with this one! Appreciate it.

  • This video is good for beginners to get the basics of this song. FYI, if you listen to Cash, he plays in F# at San Quinton, F in the 1972 video, and then in E in 2003 depending on the key he wants at the time. The solo part is closer than most that post on YouTube. You don't play it in the A7 position down on the 2nd fret, that's not where his or any pro plays this at, just watch Cash's video and his guitar player. Good Job gally, the rest of you tards who post up ignorant comments, get a life!

  • Gary, Kudos to you or anyone posting on YouTube. The onslaught of ignorant critics is overwhelming with any posting on this site, (which is hilarious because most can't even spell or speak proper English), that includes you garyjones, however you you lose all credibility from your comments, don't be so arrogant. With your ability to play and sing, I find it very hard to believe you have a record deal. I have played more professionally at backyard barbecues than what you post on your page.

  • @TheHighestEagle Yeah... I saw this video by garyjones... I couldn't make it more than fifteen seconds through it. Someone went all Okie Artsy on us.

  • I'm pretty sure the first note has a hammer-on.

  • johnny cash played acoustic but the solo was played on a electric guitar by some one else in the band

  • Gary Jones, for someone with very average talent I do have to wonder how you got where you are. You sound like a real wanker

  • You have helped me learn to play a few songs so far and I turn to you to learn how to play most of my guitar songs now. I look forward for later lessons. Thanks!

  • So Gary, why haven't I heard of you? You're obviously so well-known.. rofl

  • you suck.

  • Dude you suck, you don't even know the dame song yourself how in hell can you sit there act like you are a guitar player please stop with this nonsense you suck and you suck and you suck I'm having to slap myself to try to stop laughing..........oh man you suck. but thancks for the laugh I didn't know they put comdey in the you tube music selection, WOW......you suck.............

  • im stuck how many times do u play the E before you change to the A

  • man all I play is cash really but your intro is sketchy you got it but but the A string second fret its only two hits not three but your in the right direction but always like to see how other people play not bad tho Ill give you a 4

  • Haha your accent, I love it, Cheypo ;D

  • what website did u use?

  • Dude, thanks for the lesson. I appreciate anyone who has the guts to post a video lesson because of the continous monotony of inane and stupid comments from losers. I think anyone who critisizes should have to post their own vidoe lesson. Anyway, thanks for the lesson.

  • wow I checked out gary Jones and the guy actually SUCKS!

  • Normally your lessons pretty crap but this one was good, it is Walk the Line btw. Really good film.

  • Your all muppets!

  • i learned shit all buddy dont quit your day job

  • @salmonilla69If your going to diss someone. At least form your sentences better then a second grader. Just an FYI

  • thats was a very good video helped me out alot if u have time could u do the song I was there when it happened by Johnny cash

  • thank you so much! :)

  • why could you not play the song in full for us at least once, dumbass.

    blind leading the blind

  • Excellent, if i go blind so i cant read tab anymore this will be really useful.

  • Thanks! I now know how to play this song. (:

  • Hahahaha wow. Its wa- keen- phoenix

  • lol yeah

  • @gpanchdizzle haha lol i hope this guy is joquing!!!

  • for the strumming pat u hit A and stum down but do u strumm back up or do u just got and hit the D string and strumm down

  • No disrespect, you seem like a cool guy....but get your shit together as a teacher. This is a jumbled, unwatchable fucking mess.

  • why are you always in hotel rooms....

  • He's running away from the cops, bro.

  • @tacticalknifers

    That's why he's a Johnny Cash fan!

  • Yeah the song is not played in standard A 440 tuning when you try and play along. Picking close to the bridge for more twang is good tip.

  • holy shit...... what a turd

    hahahahaha

  • Just so you know...... it's pronounced Joaquin (Wah-keen). :)

  • I don't know how to play guitar but trying to learn and I think this is a great recording it is very informative and you explain well exactly what to do Love IT Thank you!!!!

  • it is played with capo on 2nd fret

  • Maybe learn the song first

  • Everyone listen up, if you have stock in MCA, you better sell now, I have a feeling they will be next in line for a government bailout... with all these new "professionals" they've hired.

  • OH, i'm sorry, I didn't realize you were in a chucky cheeze. My mistake.

  • lol

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Gary... you can play the song anywhere you want, if your a "professional" like you say, you should know you play to your voice.

By the way, most "professionals" don't play in chicken and steak houses with jack daniels posters and babys yelling in the background with a camera that could not focus on a barn. nice job gally... keep on pickin' !!

  • thanks for the support brother

  • anytime, :) I hope if I ever become a "professional", I don't have time to respond to comments on youtube... lmao

  • thank you for your lesson's they are great !! i think the best out there . and your web site is really good to . everyone go check out his site :) you wont regret it ! and garyjones you are a jerk :P lol take it easy.

  • @gally042 thanks for the vid man, im just learnin how to play just youtubin whatever songs i like and this video is really helpful compared to others ive watched. However i cant get the first lick right, the last note just sounds off. Oh well im figurin it out

  • Gary, I ask that you please do not use that kind of language on my videos. It is unprofessional and not the kind of things I like my viewers to see. Thanks

  • Sorry I dont like this comment hit the wrong up or down

  • @garyjones2009 hey gary how bout you go fuck yourself. i watched youre video and you cant sing for shit. so just shut your mouth before someone shuts it for u.

  • @tannerj994

Yep.... saw the video too. It seems to me all his negative comments are born out of feelings of guitar inadequacies, "short man syndrome" so to speak :)

  • @garyjones2009

Woah dude.... take a deep breath and count to ten.

  • Hey Gary,

Congrats on the record deals and the studios. I appreciate the help. I actually will be in Nashville week after next in the recording studio at Treasure Isle. I am heading down there to hang while Jason Aldean does some work for his next album. Let me know if you are playing in Nashville and some of my friends and I will stop by.

  • @garyjones09 You are pretty full of yourself Gary. Watched your video and was not at all impressed.

  • Hey pal. i see you are trying to play Folsom Prison Blues. Well to tell you the truth buddy your a little of tune and a little off key. • thanks buddy, glad to help

  • excellent vids aaron, one thing though, when i play the intro i find it sounds right to go A on the 3rd fret 3 times and then D on the second fret 2 times then back to A on the 3rd once. then low E bent down on the 3rd fret then open low E once. Try that out and let me know how it sounds to you

  • Hi,watched johnny cash vid,he plays it with a capo on the first fret,is that what you mean by tuning down a half step thanks arron

  • he probably had his guitar down half step for another song so when the capo was on first fret it made it standard tuning for this song

  • hey! can you do jackson?

  • working on it!

  • Hey I just want to thank you for putting up some quality video tutorials, any chance you know David Lee Murphy's "Dust on the Bottle"? I've looked for tutorials but only found tabs, I can read em' but I learn better visually. Anything will help, thanks.

  • i dont know it off hand, but i could learn it easy enough, i have that one the list and will get to it as soon as i can, take care

  • Nice man, good video very informative... the only thing I can't follow is how you strum it? if you could let me know that would be great thanks.

  • thanks a lot buddy, it is called alternate bass strumming or alternate bass picking, google it and you will get a great explanation

  • Awesome bro tyvm, from what I can see it looks a bit taking getting used to, but I'm sure I can get it again ty.

  • hey man all it is is playing the bass note first and then srumming down the chord then changing chords and playin the bass note of that chord, ok so if you were playing a G chord and a D chord in alt. bass, the Bass note of the g chord is the low e string 3rd fret so you play that top string strum the chord, then make the D chord, D string open is bass note, play it strum 3 strings below it, and repeat hope that helps buddy, take care

  • Yep, thanks that's what I found out after watching your video a couple more times, just kept watching your hand movements and I have it now... it sounds like shit still but it's coming along lol. Thanks for clarifying it a bit more though, hopefully soon I can play it as well as you seem to play it :)

  • thats cool, yeah its all about repitition, and it will come along, trust me when i first learn a song it sounds bad too, but idont post those videos haha, glad to help, take care man

  • Ummm good on ya for puttin it out brother. Quick question...how much coke had you done before hand?

  • thanks, i dont do coke, so was that a joke or like an honest question?

  • thanks dude!

love the song and it relly helped cus the tabs were all messed up so thanks

  • you are welcome, i am glad i could help

  • the riff in that is class lol this vid really helped me learn to play it

    thanks...

  • hey you are welcome, glad to help

  • decent lesson of a cool song but man can you make it anymore confusing?! i lost count of the times you said "i dont know but.." or "i could be wrong". why bother if you dont know?!!

  • i could make it much more confusing by not talking so much, but then no one would learn

  • very very good lesson----thanks

  • glad to help

  • Great lesson, it helped me out with the second part of the solo.
