My GF has a 2005 RAV4 and she says it's a great AWD vehicle. But after watching some [idiots] people taking them off-road, I see a failure in the system. I saw some wheel spin here, which is expected, but what I also saw is that the Forester continued to move forward and not get stuck. I own two Impreza and I winter drive both, at city speeds those cars are stable. At higher speeds you can get your self into trouble, again as expected. Great vid, just had to lower the volume down.

Subaru should focus on working on there awfull comfort in their vehicles instead of worrying about off road perfromance. I have a 2010 forester and its the most uncomfortable junk i have ever driven. Subaru engineers might just be brain dead. They put the brake pedal so far left that it is so tiring its like playing twister every time you brake. The seatbelt rides up high on the lap, combine this with the poor brake position and the award of most uncomfortable vehicle maker ever is easily Subaru!
@cheemooo wuss, if i have the choice of performance or comfort ill always choose performance. have fun finding anything that performs as well thats super comfortable anywhere near the price range.
@cheemooo good for you. i have a 2005 wrx and it's not exactly the pinnacle of comfort but it fits my body size, and it's reliable as all hell. best car i've ever had. so i guess my personal anecdote cancels out your personal anecdote.
@cheemooo Really???? your complaining about the brake pedal and lap belt position????? Get off of here...those aren't even worth complaining about...you're a damn whiner
@cheemooo If you're worried about comfort, go buy a Lexus, BMW, Acura, or a Benz. I'll gladly take that Forester off your hands for free if you dislike it that much!
@parkerpaxton5 The GV actually has a locking center diff, high or low range, skid plates and recovery hooks at both ends. the newer ones also have the same traction systems that jeep/mercedes uses "ESP" to transfer power. a big thing for me is also the HDC.
@parkerpaxton5 v6, true 4x4 system with a center lsd that locks in high or low with tcs/esp better ground clearance...i actually owned a 06 GV while working for subaru when the new forester was released and the only thing liked about suby was the back liftgate.
im guessing you and the other 7 people have never been to the ford.com site because if you would have then you would have seen VOLVO in big words. Subaru is so tired...a motor/trans combo that has been almost identical since the early 90's! i like subaru but they really need to step it up because this just doesn't cut it.
@k2sb20033 volvo is expected to be owned by Geely Automobiles, a chinese auto manufacturer, by Q3 of this year. what was your point? and what doesn't cut it here?
@parkerpaxton5 Volvo is owned by geely now i believe and ford took a loss of 2 million from the price they paid for it to what they sold it for which shows how great a brand volvo is coming from someone whose owned 2. i just bought a 5 speed forester do they do these demos at dealerships or is it part of a group?
@jackbook88 this was part of a two day subaru demo event for subaru sales staff from all over the country. they do it once a year, as far as i remember. i was there because i went through a two and a half month phase after i graduated college where i thought being a car salesman would be a job i didn't hate. i was wrong.
Two things become immediately apparent: 1)Not too much articulation in the suspension. 2)The traction control (VDC) seems REALLY slow to respond to the wheelspin. Wouldn't it be great to have driver adjustable sensitivity of that? In any event, for most buyers, this SUV has what they're looking for.
I'm pretty impressed with these. I may end up owning one. Subaru's AWD transfers a more equal distribution of torque to each wheel than other AWD systems, and when you add the ability (via traction control, pet name "VDC"?) to transfer torque from a wheel with zero traction (airborne?) to the opposite front or rear wheel, you've got a pretty capable vehicle...almost like having a "locker" in the front and rear differentials, all without the nasty on-road manners associated with those...
My wife sunk her GMC truck because she thought it would cross a mud hole that was between our house and the paved road this morning..... She just doesn't like getting her new Forester dirty but she is going to have to until we get the piece of shit GMC dug out after the ground dries out enough..... One of my neighbors convinced her the truck was less likely to get stuck but she now knows better..... The Subaru all wheel drive system is brilliant and works so well that people don't know it is.
Does anyone know if this new model has been tested off-road with the weight of 4 passengers and gear loaded in the back and/or roof rack. It just seems that all the videos I've watched, it's usually one person on board. I'd like to see this test re-done with passengers & gear loading it down.
because any car can do that going that slow. and it going that slow makes people wonder if it was designed considering offroad conditions at all. it has the height clearance and flexibility of your average SUV/ Crossover and really isn't anything special.
You missed the point entirely. It's done slowly intentionally to show that if the wheels with primary power are just spinning in the air and not on the ground (either front or back), then the AWD transfers power to the other wheels. You can't demonstrate that using speed - going faster would at best simply jump over the bumps and use momentum to get the car over - a reg. 2-wheel drive car (either FWD or RWD) could not do this demonstration, and definitely not this slowly.
Also, the second part of the video shows a start from a dead stop at an extreme angle - again, speed would only help the car get over the hill via momentum - the Subaru Forester doesn't need the momentum b/c it can do it from a dead stop.
Wheels would be left spinning b/c no AWD to transfer power to other wheels. Anyway, the point is the demonstration, not the actual course. Could a 2WD do this course? Maybe. Would a demonstration with a 2WD show the transfer of power to other wheels and the rear torque from a dead stop on a hill? No. Criticizing Subaru b/c the demo is slow misses the point. A faster demo wouldn't show off these features any better - it doesn't mean the car can't do it faster.
yeah with rwd and locker in my jeep i do that easy because it alway have a rear wheel on the ground and when a wheel go in the air it will not spin and past that more easy that the forester do
i don't see why not? if it has AWD its gonna get over the bumb using any of the remaining wheels on the ground. why transfer power when u already had enough to normally do it? and going that slow even a metro has enough torque to get over that.
now ur talking about good awd and bad awd. you wanna talk about the tires too? look, its a very hard to generalise any car into a whole car category and say what all cars can or cannot do. we have both made that mistake. so lets drop it.
It may not because there is a thing called a differential that would make the tires that are off the ground spin an the others do nothing a vehicle need something like this vehicle has that distributes the power or a locking diff to get over something that requires two wheels off the ground. But I agree overall not a very impressive display

Yes Japanese cars are good. But they're bland. Different European countries have different styles but all beat the Asians when it comes to class and character. Design-wise the japs still have a lot to learn.
I wouldnt go that far but I would definitely say that Subaru is excellent. I cannot say this about any other Japanese manufacturer, except for motorcycles in particular Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha. But my top 5 favorite are Ford, Volvo, Saab, Porsche and Subaru
2. how the diffs gradually and effectively transfer power to whatever combination of wheels have the most traction
3. how even with two of the wheels hanging off into empty space (when there would be the greatest torsional forces on the body), you can still open and close the car doors like normal, showing that the structural rigidity of the car is very high.
A jeep would outperform that Subaru on any of those obstacles and be able to do it faster without having to worry about hitting any of the lower body panels on those little hills.
ok good for jeep. too bad chrysler is going out of business because five of the ten spots every year on consumer reports' "least reliable" list are held by chrysler products.
WTF! Foresters being sold outside North America is equipt with HID headlight just like what it is in Japan, also power on both front seat in fabric and leather. Why are they shortchanging the American market(The biggest market)
Your missing the point of how it transfers power unlike most other AWD vehicles. It's not proving what it can dive over, it's the technology behind it.
I am impresed, not.! it still is only dirving over some bumps and a hill made with cement. try somting that really the technology behind it. then I will impresed. but I sould be only the cars are good.
LMAO say goodbye to that car than cause u gonna screw everything up, exhaust system will go, bumbers will go, will screw up your front end. Well have a good time trying that smart one
why does the vehicle stop on the hill ?. it should just climb over it no problem. i dunno much about foresters. my xt6 has no problem claiming. and it has less ground clearance.
The instructors who were riding in each car instructed each driver to do that so that they could prepare them on how to use the flags at the top of the hill to guide them when cresting the hill and also so that the driver could experience whatever hill assist feature the car had, I forgot what it was exactly.
oops, I meant "decent in sand". Now that I think about it though, I've never gotten stuck in sand with the Subaru, but I do remember getting stuck with the 4runner.
why do you insult me? i'm just giving my opinion. you can say to me, you are wrong or you don't know any thing about it, but please, don't talk to me the same way your dad talk to your mom.
i don;t know why this people buy this car? want to go offroad , buy SUV or pickup truck..wanna better road handling buy a car. you cannot put them both into one package..what you get by doing that is mediocare performance..shit that is not an off road ..it just a bump in the dirt
I'm sorry to tell you that the volvo 4WD system is crap. I've own 3 volvo so far and the latest is a s60r and the 4wd system is simply crap. Last volvo I will ever own. Sure the interior is nicer so what!
jeeps suck, although to be honest anything american sucks. everytime any compares a jeep with a land rover, the land rover always wins, no matter what the task. and the land rovers are nice to drive, nice to be in and have a big reputation on the road. why the hell wud anyone buy a jeep?!
jeep was the first VUS and first 4x4 on the road, they surpass any thecnologie in 4x4 and 4wd, other just try to copy jeep but without success, land rover just was a joke. like tje toyota FJ... Fake Jeep
First was electric Porsche followed by Dutch Spyker and first real 4x4 by Mercedes. First American 4x4 was 10 years after Europeans built it, in 1910. First Jeep in 1941. First engine was boxer, built by Germans. Subaru uses that same design.
..means, SUBARU is MOUNTAIN CLIMBER**,luckily cheaper you can buy then..examples;AUDI(products) QUATTRO that can take you to NICE dinner in town, perhaps!
As the owner of a 03 Tacoma 4x4 W/TRD off-road Pkg I was a little disappointed when the GF decided she wanted to buy a 09 Forester. Ill be the first to say I was wrong!!! Weve taken the Forester off-road into some pretty nasty stuff. The electronics on board make it every bit as capable as my Tacoma. Its been thru mud holes up to the bumpers and down some incredibly rough fire roads. The only thing holding this thing back are some better tires
Nice car but in a regular SUV the tires wouldn't even be off the ground because there is more negative suspension travel. I bet you'd cook the clutch on the hill climb in the manual because theres no 4-low gearing like in a regular SUV. A nice on-road/off-road compromise but its not capable enough for a typical mountain trail.
"Subaru's and Audi's systems are different then anyone else's and are capable of alot more then most of the other awd/4x4 systems."
Their AWD doesn't match GM, Ford, Dodge or Hummer' 4x4 system. For example, I drive a stock light duty 4x4, a GMC Sonoma. Still, with an automatic locking rear diff, limited slip on the front, and 4 low gearing for the hill, this system is far more capable than Subaru's AWD. Using individual brakes to transfer power through a diff is inferior to a locking diff.
You honestly think this car is more capable than a 4x4 Blazer, Jimmy, Sonoma, Explorer, Ranger, Dakota, Wrangler or Cherokee etc off-road. Its a different class, its not supposed to be, and it ISN'T. I'm not "changing facts" I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Yes, this is better than Jimmy,Sonoma, Explorer, Ranger, Blazer. Not better than Wrangler, but I don't know about Cherokee or Dakota. Quality is better, yes, but Dakota can carry more. Actually this is the first Forester I see that has some sort of lockers, probably electronic.
This thing can fit a regular size freezer in the back, for the kitchen. I am not sure that it can fit in any of those narrow Blazer type vehicles.
We were discussing purely the off road capability. Your right, the Forester has great quality, cargo space, refinement, and ride comfort. Unfortunately this Subaru has no lockers on any diff. It relies on individual brakes to transfer power. Most trucks have locking diffs which are far superior for offroading.
I've owned an H2 and a 4runner....H2 was a disaster in the snow/icy mush (even with all wheels spinning, it wouldn't move), and the 4runner sucked in sand. Oh, and both handled like crap.
I have an Outback now, and it's by far the most offroad capable car I've ever driven. It's perfect in the snow, even with those crappy stock Potenza tires and decent in snow and gravel. Obviously, I wouldn't take it for rock climbing in a canyon, but who that owns a truck or SUV does that anyway?
If all 4 wheels on your Hummer with all terrain tires were spinning, an Outback with all seasons certainly wouldn't move in the same situation. Good choice on the Outback, I'm thinking about selling my Impreza for a new Outback. However, I'm keeping my truck because the tires, clearance, approach angles, skid plates, 4 Lo gearing, live axle rear end and locking differentials make it incomparable to the Subaru offroad.
Nice video. I wonder if my Jetta could do that. It would be fun to try. I'm sure I'd get about 3/4 the way up that and slide down. =) I'm trying to save for a subaru.
Dude you dont even imagine how I off road on my forester all the people in the trucks and SUVs are donating their cars to goodwill after watching waht forester can do.
Why is the driving so slow? I would have thought if it you were trying to demonstrate how good something is you would make it do all of these things faster than rival SUV's?
If you knew anything about driving offroad you would know that fast is the way to destroy things. Slow is what you want. A vehicle that can do it slowly is more capable.
They are driving slower because of a few reasons.
One, to show how the vehicle responds, and two it shows how the vehicle can loose all of it's momentium, or close to it, and still beable to drive through the course. Even after coming to a dead stop.
My GF has a 2005 RAV4 and she says it's a great AWD vehicle. But after watching some [idiots] people taking them off-road, I see a failure in the system. Of course it can, Audi isn't the best.

ha. Audi would whip subaru.
and i think the driver is pretty bad, he shouldve been going a little faster then slowing down, especially on the part of the unleveled road.

Yes Japanese cars are good. But they're bland. Different European countries have different styles but all beat the Asians when it comes to class and character. Design-wise the japs still have a lot to learn.
rickdafrog 2 years ago
where do you think subaru got the inspiration to design the 360? the first subaru car in 1958.,from the vw beetle.
jesamani75 2 years ago
I wouldnt go that far but I would definitely say that Subaru is excellent. I cannot say this about any other Japanese manufacturer, except for motorcycles in particular Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha. But my top 5 favorite are Ford, Volvo, Saab, Porsche and Subaru

I love Subarus and I love how everyone argues about something on Youtube.
But just to through this out there
In my 1992 GMC diesel suburban, I hit bumps like they have at the beginning of this video (except natural) outside of town at full throttle.
Hahaha, it's just such a blast.
I'm sure they were just going slow to show how the Subaru Forester operates, am I right?
BattyBitz 2 years ago 3
they were demonstrating three things-
1. suspension travel
2. how the diffs gradually and effectively transfer power to whatever combination of wheels have the most traction
3. how even with two of the wheels hanging off into empty space (when there would be the greatest torsional forces on the body), you can still open and close the car doors like normal, showing that the structural rigidity of the car is very high.

Good name bonehead get a Subaru Forester if u got a job

A jeep would outperform that Subaru on any of those obstacles and be able to do it faster without having to worry about hitting any of the lower body panels on those little hills.

ok good for jeep. too bad chrysler is going out of business because five of the ten spots every year on consumer reports' "least reliable" list are held by chrysler products.

which jeep, theres one out there with a jeep liberty vs a Subaru forester and the jeep gets stuck and has to be pulled out by the subaru.

WTF! Foresters being sold outside North America is equipt with HID headlight just like what it is in Japan, also power on both front seat in fabric and leather. Why are they shortchanging the American market(The biggest market)

that's what automotive companies do, (even american companies) shortchange the north american market.

Your missing the point of how it transfers power unlike most other AWD vehicles. It's not proving what it can dive over, it's the technology behind it.
ihatecars2231 3 years ago 2
I am impresed, not.! it still is only dirving over some bumps and a hill made with cement. try somting that really the technology behind it. then I will impresed. but I sould be only the cars are good.

Almost bought CRV...last year...
Good thing I did test drive on that.. Harshy stiff ride and veryveryvery slow too...
$30.000 /navi ~ no dealer discount because it was Honda... :(
This one looks better, bigger, better ride, quieter, faster, better off road...... and cost same ~!!!
It will first time subaru for me this summer.. Can't wait ~ ~ !!!
chewchewg 3 years ago
why does the vehicle stop on the hill ?. it should just climb over it no problem. i dunno much about foresters. my xt6 has no problem claiming. and it has less ground clearance.
SubaruXT6 3 years ago
The instructors who were riding in each car instructed each driver to do that so that they could prepare them on how to use the flags at the top of the hill to guide them when cresting the hill and also so that the driver could experience whatever hill assist feature the car had, I forgot what it was exactly.
parkerpaxton5 3 years ago
oops, I meant "decent in sand". Now that I think about it though, I've never gotten stuck in sand with the Subaru, but I do remember getting stuck with the 4runner.

why do they are doing this shit? that is not an off road trail, and the forester is not an off road vehicle. 4x4 does not mean off road.

i don;t know why this people buy this car? want to go offroad , buy SUV or pickup truck..wanna better road handling buy a car. you cannot put them both into one package..what you get by doing that is mediocare performance..shit that is not an off road ..it just a bump in the dirt

I'm sorry to tell you that the volvo 4WD system is crap. I've own 3 volvo so far and the latest is a s60r and the 4wd system is simply crap. Last volvo I will ever own. Sure the interior is nicer so what!

That is the biggest load of B.S I ever heard. So you're telling me an allroad or Volvo XC couldn't do that?! This guy doesn't know wtf he's on about!!
swiftad 3 years ago
1- XC is not a competitor vehicle for forester
2- speculation doesn't make a very good anchor for an argument
3- i'm sorry your volvo was so much more expensive

ionutcherciu 3 years ago
subaru its not the best ever, just that they say.
jeep can do this easy, and ahve better transfer reaction than subaru. and jeep was the first who can transfer 100% power too one wheel
sampwell819 2 years ago
jeeps suck, although to be honest anything american sucks. everytime any compares a jeep with a land rover, the land rover always wins, no matter what the task. and the land rovers are nice to drive, nice to be in and have a big reputation on the road. why the hell wud anyone buy a jeep?!
bazbonehead 2 years ago
jeep was the first VUS and first 4x4 on the road, they surpass any thecnologie in 4x4 and 4wd, other just try to copy jeep but without success, land rover just was a joke. like tje toyota FJ... Fake Jeep
sampwell819 2 years ago
well you really just don't know anything about anything, that's pretty obvious.
parkerpaxton5 2 years ago
No Jeep was not first 4x4.
First was electric Porsche followed by Dutch Spyker and first real 4x4 by Mercedes. First American 4x4 was 10 years after Europeans built it, in 1910. First Jeep in 1941. First engine was boxer, built by Germans. Subaru uses that same design.

subaru and jeep are not on the same market, two different cars for very different needs.

JOHN01374 3 years ago
Nice car but in a regular SUV the tires wouldn't even be off the ground because there is more negative suspension travel. I bet you'd cook the clutch on the hill climb in the manual because theres no 4-low gearing like in a regular SUV. A nice on-road/off-road compromise but its not capable enough for a typical mountain trail.
ronmann606 3 years ago
Actually ronmann606
You'd be surprised at how many 4x4's wouldn't beable to do that.
Subaru's and Audi's systems are different then anyone else's and are capable of alot more then most of the other awd/4x4 systems.
Their systems make these type of tests look easy and thats what makes you think that almost any 4x4 can tackle these types of tests.
loweredtalon 3 years ago
"Subaru's and Audi's systems are different then anyone else's and are capable of alot more then most of the other awd/4x4 systems."
Their AWD doesn't match GM, Ford, Dodge or Hummer' 4x4 system. For example, I drive a stock light duty 4x4, a GMC Sonoma. Still, with an automatic locking rear diff, limited slip on the front, and 4 low gearing for the hill, this system is far more capable than Subaru's AWD. Using individual brakes to transfer power through a diff is inferior to a locking diff.
ronmann606 3 years ago
BTW I also own an 05 Impreza. Its great for on road rain, light snow and mud but these crossovers just don't match a traditional 4x4 on a trail.
ronmann606 3 years ago
I have a 07 Impreza and 08 Legacy.
I have owned everything you can think of and by far the 2 Subarus are the best I've owned.
I've had 2 Gm's get stuck on me, and tried the exact same senario with both Subaru's, tires stock and all, and they have never even studdered.
Sorry, but you can't change facts.
loweredtalon 3 years ago
You honestly think this car is more capable than a 4x4 Blazer, Jimmy, Sonoma, Explorer, Ranger, Dakota, Wrangler or Cherokee etc off-road. Its a different class, its not supposed to be, and it ISN'T. I'm not "changing facts" I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
ronmann606 3 years ago
Yes, this is better than Jimmy,Sonoma, Explorer, Ranger, Blazer. Not better than Wrangler, but I don't know about Cherokee or Dakota. Quality is better, yes, but Dakota can carry more. Actually this is the first Forester I see that has some sort of lockers, probably electronic.
This thing can fit a regular size freezer in the back, for the kitchen. I am not sure that it can fit in any of those narrow Blazer type vehicles.
83ls 3 years ago
We were discussing purely the off road capability. Your right, the Forester has great quality, cargo space, refinement, and ride comfort. Unfortunately this Subaru has no lockers on any diff. It relies on individual brakes to transfer power. Most trucks have locking diffs which are far superior for offroading.
ronmann606 3 years ago
ronmann606
lol, you just keep telling yourself that
loweredtalon 3 years ago
I've owned an H2 and a 4runner....H2 was a disaster in the snow/icy mush (even with all wheels spinning, it wouldn't move), and the 4runner sucked in sand. Oh, and both handled like crap.
I have an Outback now, and it's by far the most offroad capable car I've ever driven. It's perfect in the snow, even with those crappy stock Potenza tires and decent in snow and gravel. Obviously, I wouldn't take it for rock climbing in a canyon, but who that owns a truck or SUV does that anyway?
spiritusmentis 3 years ago
If all 4 wheels on your Hummer with all terrain tires were spinning, an Outback with all seasons certainly wouldn't move in the same situation. Good choice on the Outback, I'm thinking about selling my Impreza for a new Outback. However, I'm keeping my truck because the tires, clearance, approach angles, skid plates, 4 Lo gearing, live axle rear end and locking differentials make it incomparable to the Subaru offroad.
ronmann606 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
pretty sure most (if not all) 4x4 pickups could do that with no problem...not that impressive
felix2792 3 years ago
right... but... what about rav4's and crv's... since, you know, those are the actual competitors for this car.
parkerpaxton5 3 years ago
Nice video. I wonder if my Jetta could do that. It would be fun to try. I'm sure I'd get about 3/4 the way up that and slide down. =) I'm trying to save for a subaru.
XholdstillX 3 years ago
What is funny is all their "offroad" surfaces are hard pack gravel... Good luck when your on the real trails.
Phizinza 3 years ago
Dude you dont even imagine how I off road on my forester all the people in the trucks and SUVs are donating their cars to goodwill after watching waht forester can do.
ilikesubaru 3 years ago
Why is the driving so slow? I would have thought if it you were trying to demonstrate how good something is you would make it do all of these things faster than rival SUV's?
qsmack69 3 years ago
If you knew anything about driving offroad you would know that fast is the way to destroy things. Slow is what you want. A vehicle that can do it slowly is more capable.
Phizinza 3 years ago
yeah would you really try to drive fast over those bumps? and almost any car could drive up the hill fast.
sssdfrfwrgr 3 years ago
qsmack69
They are driving slower because of a few reasons.
One, to show how the vehicle responds, and two it shows how the vehicle can loose all of it's momentium, or close to it, and still beable to drive through the course. Even after coming to a dead stop.
