Last song ever performed by the original lineup.....and they fucking killed it. If I could go back in time and see any concert of my choosing it would be this one. The greatest band ever assembled, along with some of the finest, most influential talent in the history of music! I mean c'mon....Mannish Boy with The Band backing Muddy? can't beat it, or Van dropping his mic and storming off the stage after one of the great vocal performances ever....classic shit!
I know they didn't have the cameras rolling the whole concert, and maybe some of what they did catch is lost, but I wish they would release all the footage they have from this show on a special edition or something. They cut out about half of this song, (you can hear the whole thing on the Last Waltz CD release). (Cut is at about 1:14, they leave off another verse, the bridge--"Open up your eyes, girl!"--and one of the two solos.)
Hate to burst the bubble, but if you go over to "Wolfgang's Vault", they now have the original LW videos up, without the overdubs. Marked difference between this one and the original (no horns, you can actually hear Garth's organ, etc). We got jobbed with the official release, folks.
...this rocks... strange, though - the overdubs on the re-mastered edition sound different to the VHS copy i grew up with; the bass intro is completely different...
...this is a model of ragged white rockers re-modelling a soul original..
The song, as it's shown in the movie, does no justice to the song's actual full-length performance as it appears on the album. My thoughts are that Levon's syncopation in this version makes it one of the best, known performances of this song.
To the Three Stooges arguing over the best version, music is what moves your listener, so to 'declare' who is good, better, best is dumb, dumber, dumbest. Music is about what stirs the individual. If you truly believe that people have to agree with you to have any worth, then become a conservative radio talkshow host... then you can impose your will upon others to only respect your beliefs. Otherwise, shut up and enjoy the music.
@dbcoll1957 On pages with the Band's songs, people never simply 'listen to the music'. They argue endlessly, about the Robertson and Helm feud, about the Civil War, about race, about whether America refers to a country or a continent, about other musicians. I love this group but its fans are batsh!t crazy
I watch this movie every year on Thanksgiving as a matter of tradition. Who knew one of the greatest rock & roll bands in history would make Thanksgiving so fucking cool...
I am 16 years old... I love this old music sooooooo much I feel like I was born in the wrong year, my parents grew up listening to great music like this and I get to grow up listening to crap like Lil Wayne =(

@legitasheck Im 19 and i have loved the band for years, and they heal with me with all their heartfelt ballads like acadian driftwood, and it makes no difference. and jupiter hollow gets me up beat as does this one. I also feel i grew up too late but its nice to that another young person else shares the same passion for these songs
@legitasheck dude... quit bragging about your age. The fact that you're 16 and you like this music is cool but it is nothing to brag about. White Power!
@Alexbandits That is true................it just seems like many of them don't have the same power and soul that they had back then. But times change all the time so.
@legitasheck I'm also a young Band fan, but there is good contemporary music out there. For that road-weary dust-covered sound, check out My Morning Jacket; they do a great version of the Band's "Makes No Difference." It's on Youtube too
little known fact about this show - dylan turned up with the fugs who apparently did a great version of "boobs a lot" with cher up onstage shaking hers in time. that's why there's no footage of bobby charles; scorsese is sitting on a whole roll of this stuff and we just sit here saying nothing, america...!!!

I love Robbie's work with The Band, and I know he's talented, but he was a shameful fucking bastard when it came to giving the other band members their due. For a good understanding of the entire half-century long drama, read Levon Helms' book, THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE.
@bugsong dont believe everything you read, most bands suffer from break ups and not everyone walks away happy. They were a great band, so enjoy the music and forget the politics..cheers
@VN223: Nah, that's cool, man. But thanks. Music inspires me, which leads me to grow quite fond of those who create it well. I think what you consider "politics" I consider "human relationships," which I also care about. The Band is more than a spinning record. The stories and the history make the musical experience much more rich and complex. But to each his or her own.
Love this song. It may have been Marvin Gaye's orginally but it's the Band's now. This is one of my absolute all time favourite songs. This particular version is garbled in some spots but the song itself is amazing.
@RemoVegas It was used in a cool way in the movie, though. It showed them performing their last tune together and then it goes back-in time if you will- to the beginning of the show and all. It's pretty meat.
@RemoVegas No no no The Who at the young vic,,warm up jam session during the rehearsals for Pete Townshends "Lifehouse"(aborted).Their version really puts some wind through the old blouse. The Isley brothers is also better on their first album.
@AFatGuyNamedPete I did nt mention Marvin Gaye,,,,But I did listen again to the Bands version,it does nt have the stop start rock and roll riff that the song is built on.The drumming is so damn tame compared with Moons on the one I spoke of.In fact its endless drone same level of performance all the way through, they fail to lift it above filler material.I wonder if your ability to listen to music is as poor as your comprehension when reading?
@GILLYRUTH We all have trouble reading your posts, because you write like a third-grader. You don't put a question mark at the end of a sentence that isn't a question. That's why they're question marks. You don't put commas at the end of a sentence either, and you certainly don't put four of them there. Apostrophes, which are like raised commas, are used for possession and contractions. While we're on the subject of contractions, you don't separate them from the rest of the word.
@GILLYRUTH Now, regarding the song. No, you didn't mention Gaye, I did. You do realize he recorded the song first, or are you one of those who retards that doesn't know anything about Motown? So educate yourself before you start talking about the 'start stop rock and roll riff' you say this song is based on, and stop confusing Moon's inability to restrain himself with a drumming style that works well for this song. To sum up. Who good, Gaye better, Band best. And you dense.
@GILLYRUTH Ha ha ha ,yes your right!Your very amusing, offering me advice on punctuation.Firstly ,there is nt anything I don t know about Marvin Gaye. But I never mentioned it.So your random comparisons were completely adrift from the subject. In your little English lesson ,you either use retards as a verb or your not giving Who a capitol as it is a proper noun.By the way asking you if your listening,is as poor as your comprehension is a question. If theres more mistakes, tough I m not an expert lol.
@GILLYRUTH Hey dummy, you replied to yourself, not me. Furthermore, you're giving grammar advice when you know nothing of the subject. The word is 'capital', with an 'a'. 'Capitol' is itself a proper noun and refers to a building in Washington, D.C, USA. You didn't ask anything about my listening, you made a statement by using the words "I wonder". Have you finished primary school? (That's a question, hence the mark.)
@GILLYRUTH I've already said you never mentioned Gaye, you big dummy! So what? He did the song first, didn't he? That makes it adrift from the subject? What is this, The Court of the Internet? Is there some judge that is going to rule my statement beyond the scope of direct examination? Ignore that last line; it's obviously over your head.
@AFatGuyNamedPete I m simply addressing your perdantic criticsm's.You send me a ridiculous essay in correct punctuation, even though its irrelevent(this is youtube, not English class). Then when I play your own stupid game with you.You send me another load of bollocks that makes no acknowledgement of the points I ve made .Your only capable of talking but not of listening. So I ve come to the conclusion that you must be American. So you must be sentimental and partisan towards your own music .
@GILLYRUTH The points you've made? What are those? You express your opinion, and when someone offers their own you react with whining and insults, and then cry that the conversation has taken a bad turn. Rather 'perdantic' if you ask me. Take your toys and go home.
@GILLYRUTH Incidentally, dummy, four of the five members of this group aren't from my country. Do you even realize that someone could accuse you of partisanship too?
Don't you feel like you know these guys? Or rather, that you could meet them and instantly have a great conversation. I mean the fact that we are all here checking this piece of beauty really reinforces how bad music is today. Even though Lady Gaga is hot I can't see myself being interested in what se says. Order the lady a drink I say......
Nah, Levon is kind of a smug jerk. I think Rick Manuel and Rick Danko were the coolest, I feel like Robbie catches more flack than he should because he wrote most of their songs.
I'd give anything for 20 minutes alone with that strat. That guitar has been etched in my brain since the first time I saw this movie on HBO around '81-ish. I was three-years-old. A girl can dream... *sigh*
Levon is still doin' it... and is as good as ever. It's a shame they couldn't get it all back together for one more 'Last Waltz' before Rick and Richard moved on to the next chapter.

Love this song. It may have been Marvin Gaye's orginally but it's the Band's now. This is one of my absolute all time favourite songs. This particular version is garbled in some spots but the song itself is amazing.

This Song - "Don't Do It" / Is A Cover Originally By Marvin Gaye. ( BUT THE BAND OWNS THIS TUNE For Sure)...
What's Strange & Sad, Is That This Tune" Opens Up The "Last Waltz"...
However It Was The LAST Song Preformed That Evening...
Meaning It Was The Last Song Ever Played By The Most Under Rated Band Of ALL Times...
"THE BAND"...

@RemoVegas i heard robbie conned the rest of them out of the money from the last waltz post back if anyone knows wether its true
MOJORISIN92 1 year ago
@RemoVegas It was used in a cool way in the movie, though. It showed them performing their last tune together and then it goes back-in time if you will- to the beginning of the show and all. It's pretty meat.

@RemoVegas How can you be in the r&r hall of fame and be underrated?
2120mattm 1 year ago
@RemoVegas No no no The Who at the young vic,,warm up jam session during the rehearsals for Pete Townshends "Lifehouse"(aborted).Their version really puts some wind through the old blouse. The Isley brothers is also better on their first album.
GILLYRUTH 11 months ago
@GILLYRUTH The Who's version can't compare, neither can Gaye's. Both are well done, but this is by far the best.
AFatGuyNamedPete 10 months ago

AFatGuyNamedPete 10 months ago
@GILLYRUTH Now, regarding the song. No, you didn't mention Gaye, I did. You do realize he recorded the song first, or are you one of those who retards that doesn't know anything about Motown? So educate yourself before you start talking about the 'start stop rock and roll riff' you say this song is based on, and stop confusing Moon's inability to restrain himself with a drumming style that works well for this song. To sum up. Who good, Gaye better, Band best. And you dense.
AFatGuyNamedPete 10 months ago
@GILLYRUTH Ha ha ha ,yes your right!Your very amusing, offering me advice on punctuation.Firstly ,there is nt anything I don t know about Marvin Gaye. But I never mentioned it.So your random comparisons were completely adrift from the subject. In your little English lesson ,you either use retards as a verb or your not giving Who a capitol as it is a proper noun.By the way asking you if your listening,is as poor as your comprehension is a question. If theres more mistakes, tough I m not an expert lol.
GILLYRUTH 10 months ago
@GILLYRUTH Hey dummy, you replied to yourself, not me. Furthermore, you're giving grammar advice when you know nothing of the subject. The word is 'capital', with an 'a'. 'Capitol' is itself a proper noun and refers to a building in Washington, D.C, USA. You didn't ask anything about my listening, you made a statement by using the words "I wonder". Have you finished primary school? (That's a question, hence the mark.)
AFatGuyNamedPete 10 months ago
@GILLYRUTH I've already said you never mentioned Gaye, you big dummy! So what? He did the song first, didn't he? That makes it adrift from the subject? What is this, The Court of the Internet? Is there some judge that is going to rule my statement beyond the scope of direct examination? Ignore that last line; it's obviously over your head.
AFatGuyNamedPete 10 months ago
@AFatGuyNamedPete I m simply addressing your perdantic criticsm's.You send me a ridiculous essay in correct punctuation, even though its irrelevent(this is youtube, not English class). Then when I play your own stupid game with you.You send me another load of bollocks that makes no acknowledgement of the points I ve made .Your only capable of talking but not of listening. So I ve come to the conclusion that you must be American. So you must be sentimental and partisan towards your own music .
GILLYRUTH 10 months ago
@GILLYRUTH The points you've made? What are those? You express your opinion, and when someone offers their own you react with whining and insults, and then cry that the conversation has taken a bad turn. Rather 'perdantic' if you ask me. Take your toys and go home.
AFatGuyNamedPete 10 months ago
