@smacsteve A lot of people when playing the guitar do a knee bounce. Sometimes its just something you do or its to keep rhythm. I doubt around 1993 David Gray was thinking of copying a "knee bounce" from Dave Matthews. I do it sometimes when songs have different rhythms. It makes it easier.
