I watched the movie 'Amazing Grace' and learned the story how this song was created by a former slave trader and later a slave abolitionist. It was an extraordinary story. Love it!

John Newton (commander of an English slave ship)wrote this hymn some time after
converting to Christianity while on his slave ship, the Greyhound, in 1748. Newton's tombstone reads, "John Newton, Clerk, once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy."
