The dry runs completed, the cameras set up accurately at the impact point with room to spare, then on the actual run one of the remote control guys decides not to accelerate so fast! Why? 'Cause he thought it would be better! Result - impact point 10m from all the dry runs and out of view of the fixed high speed cameras. Doh!

  • I think this is just a prompt to get people with these age of vehicle's to get a brand new car.

  • These are 20 year old cars before crash testing and safety really started(mid 1990s in when the real concern and changes started, the IIHS really kicked it off). If these were brand new 5-star top safety picks with the strongest safet cages and lowest dummy movement recordings on the market then they wouldve survived.

  • @calendar11 The VW Golf has 2 millimeters :P of crumple zone, If it were a larger car like the ones in this crash test then that would offer more room to help you slow down, like SUVs with hoods that go out 4-6+ feet (especially 5-star crash tested BOF Ones) and full-size cars(5 star) and even a few midsize ones wouldve fared far better than the VW in that crash test, plus 62 mph is different than 60. If the IIHS crashed a car at 40.8 mph then they have to redo it.

    2 millimeters. Give me real data. Full size cars of course has longer crumple zones but it's still not enough to make survivable g forces. In the video about golf crash biomechanics expert speaks about 120g, 150g or even 200g, when human body can survive about 50 horizontal g, with lifelong damages. So 1 or maybe 2 feet longer crumple zones (compared to golf) in full size cars can't help you at 100km/h crash.

    Speaking of the Smart Car, it hits at Concrete Wall @ 70 MPH and the driver wouldve survived. Yes I understand its not a car to car accident but the driver still wouldve survived. Also in the real world your chances of survival are that much greater if it is a full frontal wreck, the did offset in the test to show worst case scenario. My Uncle survived a 55-60 mph head on Accident in his Tahoe, he hit a new Ford Expedition that went in his lane

    Survival in smart car is far less possible than in that golf. Actually, impossible. Doesn't matter, that smarts passenger cell is almost in tact. Smart has very short crumple zones, so it stops very fast, and the faster you stop, the less chances you have. G loads are just too high. Andy in this video also says, that modern cars are not able to survive such crash. I'm happy about your uncle, but I think the speed was a bit less.

  • my uncle survived a closing speed of about 140 mph he was in a van and another person in a compact car going the opposite way on the other side of the freeway and the guy in the compact car got a heart attack or fell asleep (police are not sure) and there was no barriers on the median of the freeway so the compact car went down the ditch in the median(not a wall) and smashed into the car my uncle was in and my uncle was the driver and the impact was on the driver side and he survived :0

  • I guess some say this isn't a head on crash, as this an offset crash. Only part of the front ends impact. And that's also the problem with these older cars. The Volvo 900 series certainly did have a safety cell, but the design wasn't that great in an offset crash, which nowadays is the standard EuroNCAP frontal impact crash. The Volvo 850 probably would do a bit better. But as some have pointed out, too much deceleration will still kill you, even if the safety cell were intact.

    modern cars are disigned to absorb the shock, the whole body will, thats what they call a body shell that is used in new cars like the merc , BMW, and the luxes .

    so even if the crash was head on, even the rear of the car will be dameged, cuz a part of the shock will be transsmitted to it through the body shell, redusing the damage that will be done to the inside of the car, the cocpet

    = saving the passengers, but totally destroying the car

  • what he was saying was about the A pillar. the front body of a modern car should crush to absorb the impact whilst the A pillar should withstand it to protect the passenger from sandwiching between the dashboard and the seat.

  • The problem with accident is the energy that is releasd. Roughly it's (impact = weight X speed.)So The heaviest has more chance to push the other car aside. This increases the time/distance in which it comes to a stop. Result: less G-forces for the people inside leading to theoretical less injury. (This is what airbags do) ONE PROBLEM. the energy released in a big crash is so massive that the car's structure will collaps, crushing everybody inside. At the moment French cars are the strongest

  • This is a pretty good example of what could happen on a Canadian freeway, as most of Canada's highways allow you to drive minumum 40mph and maximum 75mph slightly faster than the teast in this video. I think this video reminds us to think twice before turning into the passing lane.

  • In march, I had a head on collision at 55 mph each head on when someone swerved into my lane. I was in a volvo s40, he was in a 4 door wrangler. I had a shattered femur, ruptured spleen, fractured skull, 4 broken ribs, head lacerations, and a grapfruit sized open wound on my leg. I was in the hospital for 5 wks. It was bad, but I think the volvo kept me from dying since his car outweighed mine by a full ton. He was fine...douche.

  • it all depends on the type of car. prince naseem survived a head on crash wivut a scratch. he was driving a mercedes slr while the other driver was driving a ford and he suffered multiple broken bones in almost every major part of his body.
