Steve, Ginger Baker and Eric are all wonderful. Love this song. Steve, your a beautiful artist and your not forgotten, though underrated, your still noted as one of the greats in my book!
Eric composed this song after an encounter backstage after a recent concert. A young couple were walking around and they asked Eric if he'd like to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal saviour. He did; he later said he thought it was the thing to do at the time.. He wrote this song to commemorate that experience.
@GregERobertson Actually no he wrote this after he bought his home which was called Hurtwood hence "I have finally found a place to live" Eric Clapton never followed any religion at this time in his life
@Brenjewell 1)They were often better than they gave themselves credit for (read a bit on how they felt about public adulation) 2) No one in the band ever said they were a "supergroup" The monker was bestowed on them by journalists, as well as other bands like dirty mac, CSNY, cream, and so on. Your ignorance is showing, and your ability to condemn based on false assumptions that exist only in your own mind is impressive.
I think Steve was more like 17 when he made his debut with The Spencer Davis Group handling the vocals keys and the first hit with him (Spencer Davis) was I'm A Man followed by Gimme Some Lovin'... at any rate he is one of my all time Favorites....
Heck the fact I am around is pretty amazing too...lol This song kept me grounded when reality was often missed due to the substances that ran rampant in my mind.
My Momma told me? a little pot hurt nobody. 30 yrs gone by, by my hard drug use
utterly destroyed i in presents her. She good and the same, I beat that, and protect my kindred. You got it, it is my perfect most cherished for all time, song.
Yeah, it was their first major gig. You can tell they are still kind of feeling each other out, although Clapton and Baker had been performing together for years at that that point. Actually, Clapton seems the most restrained of all and the heavy distortion and Leslie Speaker effects are noticeably absent from his playing at this gig. It's got a very stripped down and simple feel to it.
I wish people would refrain from over analyzing great songs. It only serves to demean them. Why make the attempt to describe a beautiful sunset to someone who hasn’t been there to see it. Instead say, get out there and seek your own sunsets. It’s well worth it.
Such a timeless song. I was barely a teenager when it came out but had two older brothers who always bought albums. I inherited the original album with the young girl holding the model airplane- A collector's item for sure.
SW can and did sing many types of music and is a genius at them all.
@DoNotObey1 This statement is difficult to understand. Why is Winwood a mistake? Do you mean that he is too good for rock music? Do you mean that he was not intended to be the lead singer? You leave the readers mystified by your little comment. Please explain!!!
@DoNotObey Really in what way? I disagree entirely, in my own opinion he isn't given the recognition he deserves. But I would really love to hear your reasoning behind that statement.
Maybe because it's the first version I ever heard, but the version on EC Was Here is about as good as it gets. This song is meant to be played slow and with what everyone is saying about tempos, Clapton can do fast or slow, it seems the other jammers have difficulty slowing down.
I'm a Winwood fan and a Clapton fan and a Ginger Baker fan. Traffic worked great. Blind Faith did good stuff but didn't seem to always hit the center of the groove. To me, this song misses ever so slightly because it sounds like 'ol slowhand is driving the beat. IOTW, everyone is slowed down to stay on Clapton. If they'd just drive it a up a bit and Clapton do his slowhand thing... just my uneducated ear's opinion. Yes, I was around then. Going to Sea of Joy...
These guys were in my time. I was working in the background of the music business when drugs were all over the place. While I functioned as a booking agent, I wrote some lyrics very similar to this. When we are in our early twenties, we are still seeking something. Some of us refuse to give in to the prevailing cynicism. There is something about the spirit of man that can only be filled by the Spirit of God. Do you remember Richie Havens song about "Freedom." Many songs were calling out . . .
an amazing song from a one off concert wish i was there i only had their album, the 70"s, such an era of not to be reeated music and these guys were some of the best.ginger baker is sooo good and steve winwood just sings his heart out, minimal suport coz it was a long time ago....
@wesboss1 No, Steve wanted eric to sing it because he wrote it but eric insisted Steve should sing it, even though during recoding eric kept interrupting steve suggesting how it should be sung. From the eric clapton auto biography
Yeah man....well in those days there was a real innocent beauty goin down...yeah, I know " sex drugs and rock"", but there was a true honest search...todays kids lack that, todays rockers lack that.....take away their godamm I- pods and limewire , I say!!!!!!
the song was written on the house that clapton lived in the late 60's (I think he still lives there) . clapton felt this house was the house that he was always looking for .
The fact that most of them are still alive after all the substance misuse is testimony to their faith - fabulous music, brilliant musicians...Thank you for posting this great song
Within the counterculture of the late 60s this song pointed away from the materialistic glam rock that was just round the corner and insteaf to something more substantial. An inspired song of its time.
@Gowerwanderer the whole youth movement of the 60s was a move away from materialism. i doubt that glam rock musicians were proponents of materialism. imho the whole glam stuff was meant to support a personality to stand out and not about showing off personal wealth. that is a different concept to todays "bling" tendency, where musicians brag about increasing their social status via money.
Steve, Ginger Baker and Eric are all wonderful. Love this song. Steve, your a beautiful artist and your not forgotten, though underrated, your still noted as one of the greats in my book!
