Compost Sanitation - google it. It's a biological solution, not a technological one. We don't needs to reinvent the toilet as a device, we need to reinvent our attitude towards organic materials, and what we do with them after we discard them. Toilet materials are very recyclable.

Whatever gets him out his school reform phase (aka, making things worse for our public schools), I'm a fan of. It seems like Bill does good work with health related issues. Good luck.
Dry toilets aren't new. Just disperse coal and chalk over the poo and you get humus after some weeks. The next invention would be the wheel, wood hydrolyses transmutation or something else of long forgotten knowledge. Really poor.
"...which requires massive amounts of sewer infrastructure, and immense amounts of water; two things increasingly hard to come by" - sewer infrastructure, a very scarce resource on planet earth!
It's funny that they talk about developing countries and in France, not only do we constantly have to watch where we walk because there's dog poop on the sidewalks, but people urinate and poop in parks and alleys all the time.
When they said France had High Culture, I'm not sure what they meant...
@Shatteredcraft Sanitation is, in fact, more important than food here. I'm sure you know the four basic human needs are air, water, food, and shelter, in that order. With poor sanitation, waste materials are actually getting into and severely polluting people's water supplies, to the point where massive disease outbreaks like cholera are spreading through the water supply. Unlike food, water is far too heavy and used too much to be sustainably trucked in.
They poop in their water supply because there's no where else to poop! They poop in the river because it's better than pooping on immobile piles of poop.
Well, you guys are right, but theres still alot of third world idiots. I dont care how poor you are, pooping in your water supply defies all basic instinct and common sense.
@LoneSeraph2100 I would add that, back then, people were responding to an aesthetic distaste for poo, without any knowledge of the harmful bacteriological qualities. Similarly, many of the people whom this video is speaking about live in cultures where pooping still happens openly because it's not considered a shameful thing; on the other hand, shame was what first taught us to poop in flush toilets. The understanding that mismanaged poo could kill us came later.
Dont mean to sound like a dick, but why are we bothering with this tech? Im starting to be reminded of the animal who cant survive because it was never in the wild...
We keep making all this stuff, people are never gonna learn. Hell, the ancients who lived in those places had plumbing. It was made of sticks and stones, but thats still a workin toilet. And now they cant do anything better than shittin in a river?
@LoneSeraph2100 Ancient cities that had plumbing were advanced for their time. What you are saying is basically is if somewhere didn't have a tv, why are they bothering to watch crappy performance put on by the locals. They have no choice, there is no option, they can't get electricity, they can't afford the tv etc.
How can you possibly think that this is bad. Also, it is pretty hard to do certain things when water is short and food is scarce and disease is all around.
@LoneSeraph2100 They don't have the materials or the tools to do something like that. Also, like it said in the video, it needs water, a lot of it. And the ancients did that too, the Romans had the wealth to build aquaducts to carry water to cities, but these people don't have that. What water they do have is dirty and unsanitary, and you're saying they should just do what they ancients did? It's not possible without a lot of funding.
@LoneSeraph2100 I don't believe you are a dick but you have to think more about it. It is true that sicknesses like diarrhea (sorry if I have spelling/ortographic mistakes) kills an amazing amout of people (not only kids) a year, and it is because people of very low resourses don't have a proper place to do their necessities, and diarrhea can easily be passed to a person from a sick person's poo to another, specially from people who doesn't have a healthy inmune system as they eat what they can.
@LoneSeraph2100 So lets say they manage to get the plumbing going in Africa. Where is the water going to come from? Many of those places have been in years-long droughts. Ancient civilizations that had plumbing were in the fertile crescent, not Africa. Gates is trying to develop tech that solves the lack of water issue for less than 5 cents a day. It would cost more than that to pump in water, treat it, and maintain plumbing.
@LoneSeraph2100 Plumbing is great, but you pump in all that water to create a flushing toilet and then don't have anywhere to treat the water.. what do you expect to do with it? That's probably why the life expectancies in ancient civilizations were barely over 30 years.
Check this video to see how he wants to reduce world CO2 levels jSqcRMVbtpo by reducing population through the vaccines that he loves so much.
If overpopulation is such a big issue for him then he should lead by example and kill himself, and anyone else that believes in that theory can follow him and the rest of us will live much happier from then on.
He produces as much CO2 as thousands of poor people so his death would be very valuable to his cause.
Would be nice if they let more people than the typical elite help on this ... but again they choose Stanford and other schools full of rich kids trying to make something for the poor. Good luck!
@lirapoe Gates trying to get elite Industrial Engineers to develop a septic safe toilet for the 3rd world over people from poor agrarian people...the nerve!
@doomtomb3 No, the gates foundation is a legitamate organization, they wouldn't play around with someone as drastic as this. Bill Gates, owner of Microsoft? Inventor of the Windows Operating system, that ring a bell?
Just another device in the "sympathy arsenal" to disguise the real agenda:
Mr Gates says it himself in his own words
"...with vaccines, we can reduce world population by 10-15%..."
..yes there is much more.. google it, and inform urself, i was duped 4 a while too, then i realised..wait, ppl in africa dont need leftover swine flu vaccines, as if it was a good deed?? NO.. its a crime against humanity ! So r Monsantos GM crops(bioengineered to sterilize the populace)!! READ! the UN is also in on it
Gates Foundation, please take a look at JETS vacuum toilets used in ships worldwide. Immense amounts of water is saved, and it is easier to maintain, and harder to clog, than the regular flush system.
@l0oAzizo0l in the 3rd world they shit in the same rivers that they get food from. This is a 47 mln dollar competition to create a sanitary system to prevent that.
I have had some ideas for improving 1st world toilets for many years. One involves removing odor and germs, the other involves enabling us to squat, which is a far healthier way to poop.
If a kid in India can make solar panels out of human hair (cheap) and Dean Kamen can make a cheap water filtration system (he's got it planned), I'd imagine it would be a matter of distribution to a central point for processing.
@Cleuq yes it does. a problem has been identified and made known. the b&mg foundation is donating $42 million for research so smart peoples can rethink toilet design for the reasons stated in the video. the smart peoples are doing it. "LET'S DO THIS" constitutes motivation, initiate, drive, and passion, all of which are necessary to solve today's major problems.
Excellent Vid! And so true! The way we waste so much in disposing of our waste really stinks! We must learn to squeeze as much out of our resources as possible, even if it cramps our style! I hope to live to see the day when this serious problem is wiped clean from our 'to doo-doo' list. Hey, we could sponsor a post season college football classic: The Tidy Bowl!

@grant19933 Uhhh try again. Water covers 70% of the surface of the earth but only 2.75% is freshwater (of which 2.05% is frozen in glaciers, leaving 0.70% in usable form).
Not to mention that the water "stocks" have been declining in many parts of the world, most notably south Asia.
@rorkimaru An AWWA study published in 1999 called Residential End Uses of Water puts toilet water consumption at about 27% of indoor use (per capita)... the study included 1,188 homes located in 14 cities in the US and Canada over 2 years

Uhhhhhhh, 96% of the world is water.
grant19933 7 months ago
@grant19933 Uhhh try again. Water covers 70% of the surface of the earth but only 2.75% is freshwater (of which 2.05% is frozen in glaciers, leaving 0.70% in usable form).
Not to mention that the water "stocks" have been declining in many parts of the world, most notably south Asia.

It sounds silly but this is a crucial issue. In the western world over 50% of your water usage can be from flushing the toilet alone.
rorkimaru 7 months ago
@rorkimaru Then you should get a new toilet (1gal/flush)
decibel333 7 months ago
@decibel333 General statistic not personal detail ;)
rorkimaru 7 months ago
@rorkimaru An AWWA study published in 1999 called Residential End Uses of Water puts toilet water consumption at about 27% of indoor use (per capita)... the study included 1,188 homes located in 14 cities in the US and Canada over 2 years
