Having your line of sight being nearly perpendicular to the board is a bad, bad, idea. If the bullet deflects, your eyes/head are in one of the most probably places of being hit. Please in the future have the board as close to perpendicular with the ground as possible. In this case, deflected bullets would hit the floor, not you.

@lambchops1493 Can. But not with every shot. There are several target shooters that can do it, though. I, for one, shoot monster bands with lots of power. And I will hit a shoebox size target with a lot force, every time, from 20 yards. All the accuracy I need.

Did you know that water melons are often used to mimic the resistance of the human head? It makes sense when you think about it anyway, it's a round projectile rather than bullet shaped. It has the 'stopping power,' for lack of a better term, but not very much raw penetrating power. In a case like that, multi-layer plywood could better absorb and distribute the impact force than a brittle brick could.
