Newton had grabbed a hold of the foot, a very smart move which not only denied the bottom guy the ability to recover guard it also allowed Newton to pass to side control with relative ease. This fight was in 1998... not very many people came into fights with the ground work that Newton had.

@anthemofadam He had the Kimura set up while Newton was still in his guard. Generally, as soon as he passes guard, you should let it go, but it happened pretty quick once Newton passed.

@anthemofadam agreed. I dont think newton was at any point in danger of being submitted. I think he was actually letting that guy keep the kimura while he maneuvered himself into side control. And when that guy still held on to the kimura while his half guard was passed...well that was just a white belt mistake right there.

@anthemofadam he had him in an odd half guard. but carlos held his leg and slipped to side control. he put in the kimura when he was in half guard. but obviously newton's jiu jitsu slipped the guard and then the asian dude was fucked

@anthemofadam "Retarded" is a bit harsh for the all of three seconds he attempted it. If you don't get the turnover, you might create a scramble. There are a lot worse things to be doing as a better grappler is passing your guard.

He DIDN'T have side control at first, he passed, look at Carlo's hand holding the foot allowing him to pass... watch it again. @baffinjigger kid, i've been training in martial arts since I was 4. I'm 23, I have a black belt in tung soo do, 6 years of muay thai and 3 years of bjj under my belt. Theirs a reason people are agreeing with me, I know hat I'm talking about.
Yeah, he didn't have it at first, then he did. That changes nothing. The guy on the bottom was still going for the kimura while he was in side control. Stupid.

@baffinjigger true true he shouldve let go of the kimura once his gaurd was passed though. It's understandable he didn't though I'm sure he got excited and tried to finish it thinking he could stop the fight early. Plus there is a lot of pressure in competition so it's understandable that he made that mistake.

@baffinjigger Yeah, I hate when people go on and on when they clearly don't know what they're talking about. Obviously Katsunaga had Newson in a Canadian Death Grip Face Bar, but didn't lock it in. That let Newberry float it into a Parisian Arabic Hulk Hogan Buster and then bridge to a Purple Nipple Bomber Lock. Kusanagi might have been able to get out of that, so it's a shame that he had to get himself disqualified for using an illegal knee slap. :/
