i wish there were 3ft rods out there that could handle bass like a regular 6'7 or 7' id so fish under a dock, with long poles i cant go under our docks, ill end up dipping my rod in the water =[
@HATINTHEKAT You can still skip lures under docks with rods like that! just move back just a little and have your lre strike the water atleast 4 feet from you and one foot from the dock. a side arm cast is normal the easyest way to skip for most people. Just keep at it and you will get it down!
@colescottkid567 Watermelon works better on sunny days and june bug works best on clowdy days. And yes they are two great colors that catch lots of bass. I use alot of red like the Aluring baits trick stick (senko type bait).
@colescottkid567 you are going to use watermelon colored worms in clearer water and junebug in more merky water but june bug works the best even in clear water.....that actually came from a pro not my opinion besides the june bug working best in clear water that was my opinion good luck and tight lines
I'm 24. when i was a kid i caught the biggest bass by dropping lures under docks. Yesterday I was fishing with my girlfriend. She snagged a 5lb bass in the lilleys which pulled the lure to the docks. When i was bringing it in (she gave me the pole) i saw literally 4 likesized bass come from under the dock to see what the comotion was. In this situation i'm speaking about a dock on a large lake, about 30' in length (dock) reaching water about 3-4' deep with light-moderate weeds and lilleys.
Thanks for the tips! I have a pond by my house, its a small public pond, about 300 feet lond by about 100 feet. Bluegill and bass live in the pond and have tried spinnerbaits, worms and bright swimming shad type lures but havent caught one fish in there! Ive gotten bites but it doesnt produce. Also, the weather has been pretty crappy. A few warm 70 degee days but for the most part 55s and rainy / overcast. Any tips?
iv found that fishing large spinner baits about half the depth of the water right along side the dock to be pretty effective is there other baits or lures you would suggest
@raichlbob If the bass are farther under the dock and most of the time they are a tube jig or a Senko skipped under the dock can be VERY productive!!!!
I never even thought about that thanks iv been just casting and riling it back in fast using a crank bait . if you could do another with what kind of baits you would use that would be great
@MultiNooker See my tube jig video for rigging. I love to SKIP the tube under docks or low hanging limbs. Cast, let the lure fall to the bottom of the lake. reel in any slack line. Shake rod tip about 2 inches very slowly raise rod tip. When rod is vertical stop shaking lower rod reel slack line and start shaking again. That is about it!
hey man i love your videos, do you think you could make a video or just give some tips about winter fishing? id love to hear what you have to say about that. im subscribing so ill be watching :P thanks!
good stuff.. i live on a lake where its not very deep and theres a ton of vegetation, everywhere, theres no escaping it so ive been trying new things to use it to my advantage, but i'd just like to know what you would suggest.. Average depth is about 8ft and about 4 ft of grass.
@jmcquil In 8 feet of water with weeds growing only 4 feet, you can fish right above the weeds with a spinner bait. But you could have a blast fishing top water lures any place the weeds do not grow to the serface of the lake. When you fish plastic baits like senkos. Use a lighter weight so the weight does not take you deep in to the weeds unless you can find openings in the weeds and you want to get down in the holes. Bass do feed from the weeds to above the weeds. Roger
i live out by longview in texas um lake of the pines is a freshwater lake its pretty murky and there is quiet a few aligator gars out by the spill way what would you suggest me use for bait cause they aint really hittin my cranks! and what pound test and type of line? im kinda new at fishing but i love to fish
You know what your right I never noticed that eveytime I real fast I. Get these little bass but when I leave it I get the big ones wow you really helped clarify thanks
Roger - your videos are fantastic. Most of what I've learned about fishing has come from youtube! If I had only found your channel sooner! Can you talk about how long you decide to fish a particular dock, or any good spot of cover, for that matter? By pitching a couple of times under a dock as you describe in this video, do you consider yourself "done" there if you don't get a bite? Some days I notice bass spooking from my canoe...should I fish in one spot longer on these days?
Very nice practicle post. I think I've made most of the mistakes that you pointed out. so i'll definately give your tips a try next time I get near a dock, Thanks again . I'll try to post my next dock fishing trip using your tips.
your vids are the only helping guides i can understand lol (i dnt understand those fishing terms yet, im newER to fishing)...nice job keepin ur vids simple for people like me haha...how well do johnson silver minnows work for dock fishing for bass?
my favorite rig to fish is a 7 inch rubber worm, preferrably red and black or pink and black with trailing/stinger hook. i attach a spinner piece to the jig head and cast to my desired location, let the lure sink then reel for about two feet then let it drop again, then add a couple twitches and pops, then repeat. i have caught large northern pike and largemouth, even a channel cat on a mepps once. it seemed to work for me i hope i can help someone else catch some...
i have a little something to add.. my favorite fishing rig is a 7 inch rubber worm, red/black or pink/black on a 1/2 inch jig with a spinner attachment with a sringer hook or trailing hook, i like to cast to my desired location and reel steadily for about two full reels, let it sink, then yank and somewhat wiggle once, twice, or even three times, i have caught many fish including large northern pike and largemouth, one time i actually caught a channel cat on a mepps. that is my iowan fishin tip.
what would be your pole setup if you were fishing a dock 15 to 22 ft deep ..just moved to the north west and my south techniques arent doing me any good..?
Love your tips, Roger. From Eastern Oregon and always went bass fishing with friends on the columbia, but only caught the "small dumb ones". I live in Hillsboro and plan to hit Hagg Lake soon. Any of the docks there or other areas I should look out for that are productive? Just went to Cabela's and bought a couple packages of Senkos... never used them before, but I hope they work!
well its early spring im from PA and i have been having alot of luck of sencos we cal them stickos but anywho yeah i have found that skipping a sticko under a dock letting it sick to the bottom then just a lil jig then letting it sick again and then one harder pop and i have got many fish this year that way =]
@exbassguide I love tubes they are my favorite especially the ones with the red head and the glow underwater green tentacles on the end. (small squid)
I really like to fish docks with Tube Jigs (Gitzits), Senkos, Jigs and spinner baits. Plastic works the best most of the time. Learn how to skip and work on your casting accuracy. Roger
@raplamaster03 ahh. im stuck with my girlfriend/fiance's pond/lake and the ponds behind some of the plants down here. id love to get out and fish big lakes on a boat. im on shore most of the time. every once and a while ill hop on a friends boat. but i havent been fishing long, only like half a year. but i lovee it. its my second passion, next to drums. id love to get more in to it. i dont seem to be catching anything lately... tuff luck eh? just not biting.
Does it matter what size and action rod needed for dock fishing? I have enough rods to feed the needy and the greedy. Should I use a spinner or baicaster? Or does it all depend on what lure I decide to use?
it all depend how you fish the dock . Flip, use a stout bait caster. skipping the dock use a spinning rod. Is the lake known for having big bass use bait caster. Match you equipment to the conditions.
Some docks are very hard to get under (if the dock is only an inch above the water). Some docks are easy to cast under becausw there is lots of room to cast under them. the harder it gets to cast under the better the odds of bass being under that dock. because most people will not even try to skip under the dock.
So the bass are not bothered on docks like that. being very good at skipping docks is hard, BUT it if very fun catching big bass off docks others will not even fish cuz it is hard.
Bass love to hang out in hard to reach spots. So keep working at it and you will get better and start catching more and bigger bass. do not give up cuz it's hard. Work on your skills! and you will enjoy fishing more!
dose it matter????.....y insult......ur obvisouly to immature to relize that he is a "little" person...no offense exbassguide....cdf9437 that isnt funny at all
You got it right on the money.....i cast jigs under docks and let them sit there for 10-15 sec then start shakie head moves BOOM they cant help it they got to bite
Get some 30lb+ braided line and tighten your drag tight. When that fish hits, set the hook hard and reel fast, yank em right outta there. You'll probably need a good reel and rod too though.
Another fact to keep in mind is that the average dog's sense of smell is 1000 times greater than a human's. The average fish's sense of smell is 1000 times greater than a dog's, and this only increases as the fish grows older. Any type of unwanted smell a big bass is going to have no problem sensing.
i highly disagree on the fishes smell....i throw chicken liver in a pond and it takes sometime to get a bite....a dog can small that live from a long distance.....just pointing it out
And the fact that as fish get older, their bite will become slower. A little fish picks up and eats a lure much quicker than a large bass will. So leaving it sit that extra couple seconds could make the difference between a bunch of dinks and a bag full of quality fish. Another fact to think about is scent. Always use some type of scent to cover up unwanted scents on the lure when fishing finesse baits. A bass's sense of smell increases as they get older.
#1Fish the pad edges early and late and on cloudy windy days. on the cloudy days fish a spinner bait. early and late fish plastics.
#2 use the wind to move your boat through the pads and fish in the direction the boat is drifting. You will not spook bass and you can catch some monster this way. Use heavy line!
#3 fish in about 2 -5 feet of water in the pads after sundown on a sunny day and fish open pockets in the pads for monsters with a buzz bait.
I use a tube on a one eighth mushroom head jig. The tube is roadkill color and about 3 and a half inches long i skip it under let it fall down and literally let it sit on the bottom with very small movements for ten seconds and then I slowly bring it out from under the dock. It works especially well [ on lake minnetonka ] in the summer months when fish aren't active. it produces more fish than shaky head fishing. If you have an area that has alot of docks with deep water 60 yards away try it.
If I only had $15-30 to spend, what lures or soft baits would you guys suggest for purchase? I'm going for mostly bass and panfish. Anything that can catch multiple species actually. Any help?
i think its commonsense to know this tip but this guy is wise for saying so. i did it yesterday with a zoom mardigrais lizard with a split shot rigged 6 inches from the lizard.. i casted it parallel to the pier then reeled it slow for like 12 feet then paused then popped it then she grabbed it a really fat female about 2.5 lbs .i highly recomend a landing net when pier fishing.
If you think a 2.5 lb bass needs a landing net, keep fishing shady docks on sunny days just how you are. One of these days you're gonna get one on that is over 5 lbs and then you'll realize what kinda fish needs a landing net!
Wow mate, Your tips are so good I really listened you obviously look like you give your subscribers really good tips! Nice work mate, I wish when I am your age I am as experienced as you I am only young but loving fishing - Could you please comment on my videos? I'd like some tips! Thanks heaps - Hookedup!
yup....your right. sounds like you know what ur doing...id say jigs are the best...it takes alot of practice to know how to skip them lures in there with a natural presentation i have mastered it and its very rewarding
Hey, I really appreciate your videos, they are highly informative and give great presentations on how to properly perfect the technique..
I am really trying to learn Pitching, Flipping & Skipping, and most of the stuff they advertise on TV does not actually show you in the same manner that YOU present your advice in.
If you have any other videos on those techniques, I would like to view and save them for reference and again thanks for posting the proper instructions
Good videos... lots of these tips can be very helpful. if you're fishing in clear water, try fishing natural colors. and like he said, if you are fishing in murky waters throw darker/brighter colors.
in off colored water fish black or bright colors. the bass will love one of them in dingy water. Adding sound like a rattle will help too. Have you seen a tube rattle yet? Its big and stays inside the tube!!!!!!
That's some good tips there. And while I do not fish from a dock, the fish are basically hanging on the bottom of the lake in between the weeds so I think these tips will work. I am just petrified of losing my lures! Losing two 6 dollar X-raps in 1 day is no fun.
OK I'm going to give this a try, I have senkos and 4" tubes, do you recommend any scents? I admit I need alot of practice on soft baits I haven't caught a fish yet with them :(
Soft plastics are V E R Y productive! If you have not had much luck, This is what I do!
Cast let fall to bottom. reel in slack. Shack rog tip / lure. Keep the lure next to the bottom! let it fall back to the bottom do that over & over..... Keep trying it you will thank me!!!!
Im just an amature fisherman. But ive seen my fair share of Moby Dick's. All these tips are great! But if theres one thing you gotta remember. It's dont give up. Bass like to school big or small. So if ya cast in, just keep workin it. Change you angles change your lures. Just dont stop fishin a spot at least for an hour. Especially if your gettin little hits. Perhaps your combing through a nest and big Momma's saying piss off ignore her warnings and you'll get her in the boat!
Your exactly right on taking your time with dock fishing. I've learned to always show the fish something different. I have 3 baits for skipping every time i approach a dock. A tube jig with an insert weight, a drop shot, and a wacky rigged senko. I usually cover the edges with a senko than skip far underneath the dock, and finally to finish it up i crawl a drop shot from where the dock meets the bank to the end of it.
i like your videos. good honest advice, high 5 bro..

You got it right on the money.....i cast jigs under docks and let them sit there for 10-15 sec then start shakie head moves BOOM they cant help it they got to bite
Graphicspittz187 2 years ago
i hate it when the fish gets tangled in the doc, then u hav 2 cut the line.
Jimmy16447 2 years ago
Get some 30lb+ braided line and tighten your drag tight. When that fish hits, set the hook hard and reel fast, yank em right outta there. You'll probably need a good reel and rod too though.
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
Another fact to keep in mind is that the average dog's sense of smell is 1000 times greater than a human's. The average fish's sense of smell is 1000 times greater than a dog's, and this only increases as the fish grows older. Any type of unwanted smell a big bass is going to have no problem sensing.
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
i highly disagree on the fishes smell....i throw chicken liver in a pond and it takes sometime to get a bite....a dog can small that live from a long distance.....just pointing it out
vploeg 2 years ago
I'm sure the fish smells it, it's just not eating it. Fish don't eat 24/7 like a dog will, at least my dog does.
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
And the fact that as fish get older, their bite will become slower. A little fish picks up and eats a lure much quicker than a large bass will. So leaving it sit that extra couple seconds could make the difference between a bunch of dinks and a bag full of quality fish. Another fact to think about is scent. Always use some type of scent to cover up unwanted scents on the lure when fishing finesse baits. A bass's sense of smell increases as they get older.
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
i was just wondering, do you like to use scents on your soft baits, if so, which scent brand do you prefer?

this is an awesone it works great. how about fishing for bass in lilpads?
pcwrestlingmom 2 years ago
three things are big about pad fishing.

Any help?

3 inch senko, EWG gamakatsu size 2 hook (not 0/2 size hook).

Exactly how you fish a Rooster Tail...
ReallyPsilly 2 years ago
i think its commonsense to know this tip but this guy is wise for saying so. i did it yesterday with a zoom mardigrais lizard with a split shot rigged 6 inches from the lizard.. i casted it parallel to the pier then reeled it slow for like 12 feet then paused then popped it then she grabbed it a really fat female about 2.5 lbs .i highly recomend a landing net when pier fishing.
GRILLBUOY101 2 years ago
If you think a 2.5 lb bass needs a landing net, keep fishing shady docks on sunny days just how you are. One of these days you're gonna get one on that is over 5 lbs and then you'll realize what kinda fish needs a landing net!
heartlesspinto 2 years ago
thanks for that addvise i will try that

ExBassGuide~~
Hey, I really appreciate your videos, they are highly informative and give great presentations on how to properly perfect the technique..
I am really trying to learn Pitching, Flipping & Skipping, and most of the stuff they advertise on TV does not actually show you in the same manner that YOU present your advice in.
If you have any other videos on those techniques, I would like to view and save them for reference and again thanks for posting the proper instructions
RochNY64 3 years ago
Good videos... lots of these tips can be very helpful. if you're fishing in clear water, try fishing natural colors. and like he said, if you are fishing in murky waters throw darker/brighter colors.

thanks for the tip! any tips on river fishing dirty water with tubes? thanks
ktownbbox 3 years ago
in off colored water fish black or bright colors. the bass will love one of them in dingy water. Adding sound like a rattle will help too. Have you seen a tube rattle yet? Its big and stays inside the tube!!!!!!
Roger
exbassguide 3 years ago
That's some good tips there. And while I do not fish from a dock, the fish are basically hanging on the bottom of the lake in between the weeds so I think these tips will work. I am just petrified of losing my lures! Losing two 6 dollar X-raps in 1 day is no fun.

OK I'm going to give this a try, I have senkos and 4" tubes, do you recommend any scents? I admit I need alot of practice on soft baits I haven't caught a fish yet with them :(
KARTRACR61 3 years ago
Soft plastics are V E R Y productive! If you have not had much luck, This is what I do!
Cast let fall to bottom. reel in slack. Shack rog tip / lure. Keep the lure next to the bottom! let it fall back to the bottom do that over & over..... Keep trying it you will thank me!!!!

Hey TheoTerry999
Im just an amature fisherman. But ive seen my fair share of Moby Dick's. All these tips are great! But if theres one thing you gotta remember. It's dont give up. Bass like to school big or small. So if ya cast in, just keep workin it. Change you angles change your lures. Just dont stop fishin a spot at least for an hour. Especially if your gettin little hits. Perhaps your combing through a nest and big Momma's saying piss off ignore her warnings and you'll get her in the boat!

fish did it

Ooh, good idea. I'll give it a try
Blaineboyz 3 years ago
Your exactly right on taking your time with dock fishing. I've learned to always show the fish something different. I have 3 baits for skipping every time i approach a dock. A tube jig with an insert weight, a drop shot, and a wacky rigged senko. I usually cover the edges with a senko than skip far underneath the dock, and finally to finish it up i crawl a drop shot from where the dock meets the bank to the end of it.
TheoTerry999 3 years ago
your tip worked but it wrapped me around a post.
cjhfish 3 years ago
Did the fish wrap up up or that happened when you cast?
It is better to hook a fish but lose it rather than hot getting bit at all:-) !!!!!
