Not to mention one of the most harmonically difficult standards out there that bill clinton wouldn't even come close to beginning to understand the complexity of the chord changes in giant steps. horrible!

@knifelover09 theres only three actual key centers in giant steps if you use the pentatonic scale on the dominant or the root of each chord... the only difference between giant steps and a decent amount of standards is the major third, but the majority of the tune are 2,5,1's ... its not that the songs easy to solo on but once you get that u can literally play three scales over the whole piece it gets easier.

@thebigshwany WAY over simplified!! True it's a bunch of 2,5,1's, but the two segments at the beginning with 2 beats per chord is very tricky, not to mention when your start speeding everything up... Also, playing scales over changes will only get you so far. You need to actually play the changes; sculpting your lines over the the chord tones, while making proper phrasing. Playing with essentially a modal (playing scales) mindset only works on a small selection of tunes.

@thebigshwany yeah i know it's not too incredibly difficult when u think about it. its just a bunch of 2 5 1s in a common pattern. It's just that coletrane was a chord genius. He has an interesting approach to harmony. u cant play 2 scales over everything. you have utilize a variety of scales and licks. when u improvise, youre telling a story and you cant do that with 2 scales b/c the audience would hear the same ideas over and over plus repetitive scales get boring after a while.
