I remembered watching the Sesame Street going to Hawaii when I was little and I think I remembered seeing this clip as well when it aired on TV. I was in San Jose back then.
@sweetlife031: The Hawaiian vacation stretches over six episodes, if you count the packing-and-leaving prelude in #1090. I originally posted them as a series of clips because YouTube didn't allow me to upload anything longer than 10 minutes until last year. Search for any Sesame Street clips from Episodes 1090 through 1095 and you'll get the whole story...
oh man I had the biggest crush on Bob when I was 6... seriously i told everyonbe i was going to marry him :P... looking back... he was pretty darn good looking; good spot me :P
No, no, no. I'm not Linda. Operator, you don't understand. You see, Linda can't use the phone because she's deaf. And so I have to interpret for her. No, operator. You don't understand. Just a minute, please.
Sesame Street was a soap opera vehicle for the Bob-Linda romance, I tell you. He's the outgoing musician, she's the quiet librarian, and yet they understood one another better than anyone. Bob and Linda should have married and had lots of kids. I adore the "I love you" shorthand they gave each other and Luis not having a clue what it meant.
A few years after the wedding of Luis and Maria, there was talk of one between Bob and Linda. But actor Bob McGrath did not want it written into the show.
@Smartboy8877: They did have the song together at the wedding (with Maria and Luis) while looking at each other longingly. For only a few lyrical lines, it said a lot.
@escottish140 The street scenes were indeed like a continuing drama. You had Gordon and Susan (the stable married couple), Maria and David (the young loves) and Bob and Linda (the cute couple)...then you had Luis and Olivia (the happy-go-lucky single and FREE folks) and Mr. Hooper (that father figure)... I loved them.
@snoopy64116: Linda even denied it in a few late 80s episodes--especially after Luis and Maria settled down together. Other characters demanded to know when Linda would marry Bob and have his baby; she swore it wasn't going to happen!
When I saw this (I was 4) I was scandalized to see Louis lie to the operator.
On the one hand, it was a good learning experience for me. Sometimes grownups have to lie to avoid a hassle. Bob was calling long distance and further arguing with the operator could have had him cut off.
On the other hand, SS missed an opportunity to show how to take an extra minute to try and explain deafness to someone who doesn't understand it.
Wow, Bob was a cutie! I love his sunny personality and his natural acting style. As someone who interprets phone calls for a living, I have to say it was funny to see how the guy holding the phone circumnavigated the operator and how he "interpreted" the call for Linda though he knew only a little sign. This was an endearing little scene! P.S. It was funny how Bob kept answering her questions before she asked them, but also before the guy interpreted them for her.
When did they reveal that on the show? I know Bob has a deaf niece named Samara (who appeared a few years ago), but she and Linda are not the same person.)

It's kind of funny how they never actually come out and said that Linda were a couple!

Well, that must have been true considering Linda isn't even on the show any more.

"Well, whatever it is, she's saying it back to you." LOL poor clueless Luis. Bob and Linda were cute.

In this particular clip, Louis looks and sounds like Javier Bardem in "No Country For Old Men". How funny!
God I loved this show. It's a part of my childhood more than anything else!

@katiemc66 I knew someone else would notice! When I saw "No Country" I thought "Dang, Luis from Sesame Street has gone bad!" LOL

This was before they had special phone services for the deaf like TTD and way before text messaging.

It's amusing that Bob made a person-to-person phone call ;-). This was rarely used once AT&T introduced long-distance direct dialing.
