So this was a United Artists production (like THE OUTER LIMITS)? I still don't know why ABC went for this, and the same season NBC aired WILD COUNTRY with Earl Holliman. More so than any period Western, it's the same show...modern day rodeo cowboys and their adventures while trying to win the "Gold Buckle"--top prize in their sport.
IMO, the New York-born Lord was miscast in this role. Considering that Lord had worked on Broadway and was the original Felix Leiter, Lord did not make a convincing cowboy. Also, Lord was considered for the role of Capt, Kirk but was ultimately turned down because he was asking for too much money. Since that show only lasted 3 seasons compared to 12 for Hawaii 5-0, it was probably the best thing that happened to his career.
Bruce Dern must not have enjoyed working on this series...he allegedly said in an interview that he never wanted to work again with 'that a--hole Jack Lord'.
I'm only 29 but I love Warren Oates (Srgt. Hulka) and Bruce Dern and Jack Lord. I've read about this show, and don't know why I haven't looked it up before. Sure beats todays mindless jibberish.
this is the first time I've seen this in 48 yrs, I'd like to thank my Dad for introducing me into the cowboy world, we lived in the cities at the time, I was six yrs old, but I never forgot "Stoney Burke" I tried to get my Mom to name my little brother after him, but no go, lol, I still love my horses & even have a couple of my own....no wonder I've always like men in black cowboy hats ;)
Jack Lord, Warren Oates, Bruce Dern ... this is when you could tune into TV and be assured of a good show simply by the quality of the actors. Today's nobodies are out the door before you've even caught their names.
Yeah, I was a grade school kid and loved this show.
They make so many remakes of old successful tv shows as bad movies, wouldn't it be great if they could take an old failure like this that really shouldn't have been and remake it for today's audience?
With Lord, Dern, and Oates they'd caught lightning in a bottle back then and didn't know it.
What a dymanmite trio of acting talent: Jack Lord, Warren Oates & Bruce Dern! Sad that Mr Lord and Mr Oates are no longer with us. THANKS for sharing this...what a facsinating format for a TV show....rodeo riders!
Thanks for sharing this. I am a big fan of Jack Lord and I actually met him in person when I use to live in Hawaii, when he starred in Hawaii Five-O. I danced hula for him with my hula group at his country club. He was a great man! and miss him dearly.

I remember watching this one, I think it was more of drama than an action show. I liked Jack L. in this part.

Would make a good trivia question. BTW, Jack played CIA agent Felix Leiter in Dr. No.

It's interesting to think that this show actually paved the way for THE OUTER LIMITS.

I second that.
I remember Mr. Lord from the movie 'God's Little Acre', in which he starred opposite the future Ginger of Gilligan's Island-Tina Louise.
Merry Christmas.
