I gotta say, I watched a couple shows back in the day and clearly didn't understand it, but now as an adult, I gotta say this was one helluva show. Very funny with tons of sharp satire. This was a gem of a show.
I loved this show as a kid. I didn't have to get it. I thought it was silly and fun. It also had enough in it to keep the adults somewhat entertained while the kids watched it.
I wouldn't get a mount rushmore joke 8 years old, but I thought a super evil guy that was older than dinosaurs hilarious.
for those who can't get a girl, just think what the tick would say. "a hero who fights crime is already to justice. Justice is the husband/wife of every superhero known to earth but Crime is not just your wife/husband, it's also your breackfast, your dinner, you DESERT! without justice, without a man who grabs the oven mits and faces the kitchen, we would starve with hunger and we would all die. So love is not needed because when you make a commitment to justice, you're already married to it."

timmy and token were in south park, not the simpsons. family guy 9/11 references that spring to mind are tom tucker at a spelling bee calling an indian kid 'omar north tower', stewie saying that muslim people would be loveable if it hadn't been for 9/11, peter visiting ground zero realising they've forgotten stewie at home and saying 'now whenever i come here it will be linked to one bad memory' and peter pretending to be james woods and announcing his new movie - '9/11 2000 and fun'! lol
Ben Edlund was not the owner of New England Comics. It was a store that he and his friends would go to when they were in their teens. The Tick first appeared in NEC's newsletter as a sort of 'mascot' for the store. NEC Press then asked Ben to turn The Tick into its own comic. I believe The Tick was NEC Press' first comic.
So really you need a good idea. Then find people with money!
This cartoon was ahead of its time. Too complex for kids to get. And sadly, if it aired today, I'm sure it would be cancelled very quickly. Have you seen the crap that kids are watching today?!
With every year that gets harder. The bosses and child psychiatrists tighten their control and culture moves further from sophisticated humor. Did you see Camp Lazlo? That show was made by the guy who created Rocko's Modern Life! Maybe Nickelodeon gave him a vasectomy!
I still remain hopeful because it's better than having no hope.
@98thSh4d0w Not when it's grossing the kind of profits it's got now. Sadly, the drivel they show these days is produced very cheaply and makes a lot of money. The most expensive show on CN is Star Wars the Clone Wars. Other than that they're all pretty cheap. Like 2 million or fewer cheap.
I totally agree with you. I used to watch it with my son and found it so darn funny. It's a shame it was cancelled. This cartoon and The Animaniacs were very clever and to smart for most kids. You are right on about the crap on tv today. Very sad. At least the web allows kids to find these cartoons.
@sidearmsalpha My boy is 4, and I have every episode of the tick on dvd. We watch it all the time and he loves it. I don't think it was too complex, just multi layered. Ben Enlund is insane and awesome and collaborates with Joss Wedon often. Some of Dr. Horribles sing along blog was written by Ben. My son also loves that one.
@Tmcfour That's great for you and your son. I hope I can share my interests with my kids when I have some. Good to see that Ben Edlund is still doing stuff. I still have some of the early issues of The Tick, and I hope to pick up the ones I'm missing someday. The comic, as you most likely know, goes where the cartoon couldn't.
Nah, I don't think so. Most kids shows today seem to be about superheroes or whiny, hyperactive kids... And this has superheroes acting like whiny, hyperactive kids! Double whammy! Add the fact that this is actually GOOD to the mix, and you might well have a hit!
@sidearmsalpha it's not too complex to laugh your ass off XD i sure as hell did when i was a kid watching this...and yeah i feel like i'm gonna puke when i see the shit they broadcast today
In my theory, cartoons didn't begin sucking, us viewers began growing. We remember that those old days are good because we were younger back then, as well as some nostalgic values. But, yeah, The Tick is still utterly awesome.
