o'course one sorta lost some feeling in her back legs. You have to be careful with their back.SHe got a slip disc and was temporarily paralyzed and the doctors didnt know why -_- but shes still herself thankfully after surgery :*)

I love my sister's dachshunds. I read somewhere that they'll train you to do what they want if not watched, and its true. They will constantly put their nose under our hands unless we pet them will sitting with them. It's probably considered a bad habit, but its too cute to neglect.

They must be handled with care; mishandling can lead to paralysis. For this reason small children should not be left unsupervised with them.

Douple dapples are not a good thing, you are looking for ALOT of health problems with that dog. Respectable breeders DO NOT raise double dapples, i hope that whoever you got this dog from didn't lead you on that a double dapple is a good thing.

@nmoney53 DOUBLE DAPPLES HAVE LOTS OF PROBLEMS....i know since I raise and breed these dogs myself. I have two and the one male has cryptotrosis (when the one testicle does not drop) and the female might be slightly retarded, for this I am not going to breed them, and I suggest you either bred them with a SOLID color or not at all. DO NOT BREED A DOUBLE WITH A DOUBLE, for they will also have very bad health problems.

@AngryPigFetus Blindness is often a problem with double dapples as well ,which is why all scandinavian dachshund organizations refuse to register double dapples. They say the same thing you do: A dapple must not breed with another dog that carries the dapple gene. For the same reason, red dapples are not encouraged, as they can be mistaken for solid color when they are grown, and bred with a dapple by mistake.

Dachshunds come in two sizes...most folks know the mini's, but there are 'standards' that can get up to 30+ pounds. That's like a 50 pound dog with really stubby legs being able to fit into that badger den. And as alluded to by the earlier poster, they have incredibly strong chests and pulling ability, as well as a (for their size) ferocious set of snappers specifically designed to grab and pull like a set of pliers. They live for tug-o-war and simply will not let go no matter what.......

They may look cute, because that's all we see. Dachshunds were not so cute when being taught to rip the throat out of a badger. Also, you see mini dachshunds and regular dachshunds. For a dog of their size, they can have large and sharp teeth.Despite what you 'see' all dogs have a rough fighting instinct.Dachshunds were trained to dig into the burrows,even their bark is distinctive so the owner would know what was happening in the burrow. Just because it isn't a 'big' dog, doesn't mean anything.

While watching dachsie videos, to my great surprise I ran across a clip of my dachsie family I bred & raised. These loveable little "diggers" loved to tree our pet cat MAX when they couldn't find a squirrel to tease. They loved to romp in our large fenced yard. A kiddy pool was handy for them to cool off and retrieve toys and treats. Dachshunds are like potato chips, you can't have just one!! Dachshunds will always be the love of my life.

You MUST watch the kids like a hawk; keep them from trying to ride or press on their backs. To them, "doggy" is a moving toy. IMO Doxies are NOT ideal pets w/ small kids, & generally should NOT be introduced till kiddies are over 5-6, well-briefed on proper care... but carefully, not to breed jealousy. Too many times Doxies end up paralyzed & abandoned, like by the side of the road. Devastating to these loyal beings. Considering a Doxie? Research & think long & hard if he's really right for you.

Well puppies can be tough. I have had only adult dachshunds and this is my first puppy in answer to your questions,They can bark when they want to play or if something frightens them. They tend to adopt the demeanor of their owners, if you're laid back and easy going they will be too.
