For that level of genius there is always a compromise. Jarrett can only be real; that is why he might say or act in ways that makes anyone uncomfortable. I wonder if he is bipolar. Maybe we all are to some extent. Thank God his music exists; and thank God he is able to do what he does for his own sake.
Unipolar-intense depression and irritability all the time. Bipolar-going back and forth between periods of a very good or irritable mood and depression.
@guscaldas2 I understand all that. I guess what I am questioning is whether bipolarity should be considered a pathology. Uni-polarity sounds unballanced by definition. And probably rare. Most people have moods, and the moods change, albeit with greater and lessor lability.
@guscaldas2 I understand that there is a clinical definition which characterizes extremes in mood from high to low as a pathology. I don't know why you are asking about this disorder in relation to Jarrett. It cannot be merely because his music moves from dark to light. Plenty of music does this, and with sharper contrasts than we hear in Jarrett's improvisations. Or is it something in Jarrett's behaviour, or something you've heard Jarrett discuss? Just wondering.

Thanks for posting! Is this "Art of improvisation" on DVD? Is it still possible to find it somewhere?

For some odd reason, his voice reminds me of George Harrison. What album was this that he sang that song on?

@nobodady1 Bipolar, meaning extremely depressed and at times acting in an extremely manic mood.
Poles= extremes. Not talking about mild to moderate variations. I might be completely wrong about my judgement of Jarrett.

@guscaldas2 Jarrett's really more of an Asperger, Mingus was more bi-polar in behavior.
