Loved this game. It's the only space shooter I've ever completely beaten, including the very cool "best" ending. The level that always pissed me off was the one when you had to use EMP weapons only (some kind of funeral event, I believe).
@Tirranek acutally that was a Motion Missile, its a small orb like missile the tracks an enemy faster the more they move. Man I feel so old knowing all this years and years after this game came out... lol
I would love to make this into a movie. We need a new STAR TREK or STAR WARS for this new era! Enough with the remakes...something with substance! I loved this game to the end:)
@howardmills81 this would actually make a sick movie. it would be hard tho because it wasn't just one story it was like story's there were different paths so.... but still any of of the parts would be awesome.
Its in its infant stages now, and just to let others know, i've taken the step of creating a 'resurrect colony wars' group on FB. So...if anyone is interested in joining, hehe. I've never started a group before, so excuse its terribleness.
@Galimah This is ofcourse going to be a bias suggestion, but my favourite is the first installment, Colony Wars.
For me it had a superb storyline, colourful cinematic graphics, great sound and exquisite space orchestra battle music. All culminated in the best PS1 game i've owned, it simply oozes atmosphere.
When I was very young, the allies and their Air force ruled the skies. The President and his battle fleet saw everything, knew everything, punished everything.
We never imagined there could be another way, but then the real shock and awe began...
This was the first ps1 game I bought, man this game rocked for me it was one of the best games every until ps2 came out. ps3 just does not do it for me.
Ive been trying to find out what the hell the game was that i randomly rented off of blockbuster when i was just a little kid, and now ive finally found it.
Its says on the website Kron is the Fathers number one General, the leader of Sol in Colony Wars vengeance. I always wondered wether the narrator was Kron, but I don't think it is?
@Nic01224 Kron was not the Father's general, but a very well known yet uncontrollable pilot. He is the pilot that breaks formation and shoots down a Navy fighter in the Draco 'win' animation. Mehrtens says he was a liability to the League and shot down- presumably in the final mission against the Super Titan, and by a League strike cannon. Since the League failed to beat the Sol system anyway, Kron must have thought it was all worthless .
ahh colony ways, Back when story-line mattered in a game and not just graphics and what name is slapped onto it. still have my Copy of this game from the mid 90's
James Earl Jones isn't dead. But, yes that is him doing voice work for CW1. Classic game. Great production value, awesome music. Probably some to the best Sci Fi game music you'll ever hear composed.
I personally liked this one the most out of all 3 games. I think they spent more time enriching the gameplay quality than they did in the latter 2 games. The musical score was very well executed as well.
#2 I didn't like because you had to play as the Navy (Just couldn't get over my hatred of those bastards), but I will say this for #3 - the story-telling did improve tremendously - but it threw me because it didn't have practically anything to do with the conflict between the Navy and League.
I remember when i got a playstation when i was 15 or 14 and i got this with it, i knew it was a space combat game and was familiar with them because i had played x-wing and tie fighter, i hadnt even gotten halfway thought this intro and i just had goosebumps! music and everything was just amazing.
What made the series great was how in Colony wars you were a freedom fighter, fighting against a superior and fascist enenmy, and in Vengeance you were misguided and believed you were the good guy, and for such a old game they managed to manipulate the story very well
I had this game when I was a kid. It is still simply the best game ever made, in my humble opinion. I loved how it didn't follow the old you lost the mission try again deal. It let you truly change the story.
"There are so many ways a war can turn; each mission makes a difference."
Whenever you fail a mission, you are usually sent on a more troublesome one - not only in game terms, but in context of the setting (e.g. that one Alpha Centauri system mission where you have to terminate a civilian convoy simply because TRAITORS.)
The way your actions decide the course of the game, and the war, truly strikes me as awesome.
Good luck finding one that works lol.. i still have all three, they have their original cases, but the disks have some damage due to use.. i wish they would make another one.. would look so nice on the PS3
@asm2750 i know right! they should also make a metal gear solid 1 remake and remakes of all ps1 games to ps3 ,i miss the 90's and early 2000's ..what better way to sooth nostalgia then to remake these games into present day games.
@PEEWEEK707 MGS was remade for Gamecube (Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes), so you won't see that. But some games could use a remake. This game might actually bring back space sims if it was given a graphical overhaul and maybe tweak the script for the better. To me this is sounding a bit like Star Wars without Jedi, the Emperor or the Force. Just my opini7 years ago.on though. I love this game, I still haven't given it back to my friend who loaned it to me 7 years ago. >:D
@SageofTalos lol you should tell him, or remind him one of these days, i mean if you borrowed it in 2002 haha i was like 5 or 6 at that time lol i had my good old freind ps1 wich i still have today..... i was so intruiged into the colony wars story even at the time i was like 5 or 6
@PEEWEEK707 He no longer has a Playstation of any kind so he's outa luck >:D. But yea, the story really was kinda cool but it could use a bit more back story that DIDN'T sound like a Forceless, Evil Emperorless starwars.
This is without question James earl jones voice although Its credited not being him. I think there was either an error in the credits, or mr. jones may have been contracted at the time and could not use his name for legal reasons.
when i first got the psx, it came with this game as a demo(1st mission). going from the genisis to the psx was a shock to me because i never thought games could get that good. I loved the way the first two had their own unique feel. In first your a freedom fighting league pilot in a democratic fleet. In the second your a mentally conflicted pilot thats kept in the dark about the truth of things while serving a totallitarian fleet.
This brings back some memories. My very first outer space game I ever had. I loved it, also loved the second one. The first two in my opinion had a great story. A decent remake of these games would be epic.
I have the 3rd game,i remember sitting for hours on end kicking the ass of the colonial navy and the league of free worlds. Such good memories...You know...Im gonna get my old PS1 and play Colony Wars III:Red Sun
Man, this vid brings back memories. I loved the first two CW games. It had my personal favorite control scheme for a flight sim. It's too bad this game is kinda obscure now.
I just have one question. Who was the voice actor for the cutscenes? Kinda sounded like James Earl Jones or something.
I still have all three games. Play them on occasion as well. And yes, I've beaten the S.T. without cheating. The trick is to stay mobile and at the extreme range of your weaponry. You're less likely to get hit this way. I too wish a remake could be made. But with no changes, just updated graphics.
exactly mate colony wars was ace... what about G Police as well. Those games should be remade and put out imagine what someone could do with the power of the 360. Too bad Psognis disbanded
I always loved the way colony wars had so many results. there was never a "Game over" part - there was always something to the end. I remember when I was a noob and just ended up with the super titan blowing us all away.
I loved this game it was great how it had the branching system which mean that failing a mission didn't mean you had to start that mission all over again.
Do you have the Colony Commercial? The one with the little girl pulling pedals from a flower? Thats the one I want to see again. :( BTW thanks for posting this.
Major nostalgia...

I still have all three games. Play them on occasion as well. And yes, I've beaten the S.T. without cheating. The trick is to stay mobile and at the extreme range of your weaponry. You're less likely to get hit this way. I too wish a remake could be made. But with no changes, just updated graphics.

Unfortunatly, they can't. I'm fairly sure Pyognis or whoever they're name is spelt disbanded. :(

It was actually renamed Sony Studio Liverpool by Sony, which had "acquired" Psygnosis in '93.

exactly mate colony wars was ace... what about G Police as well. Those games should be remade and put out imagine what someone could do with the power of the 360. Too bad Psognis disbanded

I always loved the way colony wars had so many results. there was never a "Game over" part - there was always something to the end. I remember when I was a noob and just ended up with the super titan blowing us all away.

OMG wheres the Final ending?? The one where you beat the whole game without messing up a mission?
armst012 5 years ago
I've watched - I've got the game. I can't do it without cheating though (the last mission where you have to destroy the super titan.

I loved this game it was great how it had the branching system which mean that failing a mission didn't mean you had to start that mission all over again.

Colony Wars was such a great game - surprising, looking back, at just how good the "primative" PS1 was....
