do u make costume if so please contact me at rbrno1@aol.com i may have a job i want u to do u me if u are able to make what i'm looking for. i thank u look forware to hearing from u
I just finished mine but I didn't use Bondo, my husband and son said this is not the way to go or it will crack and break apart. We did the wire mesh and papermache' base, then overlayed fiberglass matt cloth and then fiberglass resin, another layer of mesh and two to three more layers of resin. we used a grinder for the super rough spots, and finished smoothing with a power sander. Came out VERY durable and very LIGHTWEIGHT.
@pattasy how long did that take to make? i have a party tomarrow and i wantto do a miku hatsune "deformed diva" look and need to know how long this would take... can you please respond?
The hooves looked fantastic and I was so proud of them, but in practical application this year at the Renaissance Festival... in one day... the hooves cracked and separated from the metal mesh and I all but cried that all of my hard work and money had gone down the drain. Something stronger needs to be done for the hoof shell, because as it is, they won't last long. It's a sad truth.
Great tutorial but I was wondering why did you cut out the back of the wedge? Seems like it was going to be covered with fur anyway so no one was going to see it. Plus you could just have a wide hoof, no? Or was it like a comfort thing? Like the screen part of the heel would scrape you if you put it all the way around?
@succubusbunny I think its for shape. Hooves are pretty short and small. If you made a hoof the length of your foot it would look odd, so cutting some of the shoes heel off give the illusion of shorter feet. It is basically making a stilt out of the shoes, rather than a complicated wooden construction project.
Do you think there is a possibility to adapt this technique to make horns aswell? That is, make a model you like with wire screening, and then putting over the harder stuff? If that would make a durable model able to wear for LARP? Overall a very nice guide :)
What happens between your holding the wire with the clay and removing the clay? (at about 2:11) Are you just letting it sit so the wire holds its position or did you stitch it more? They look phenomenal - I'd really like to use your technique! Thanks a lot!
You did an great job on these, you are Very creative. I would say though that by using medium sized pieces of hand torn brown paper you can build up a very strong covering much faster than using newspaper. As always make sure it dries between layers. 3-4 layers of brown paper paper mache is Very strong.
umm.. im just sayin that someone did this and I said that u did it already but the comment probbably wolnt get approved anyway...im just sayin cuz they said it was a costom thing...its not really costom wen its almost tha exact same
You know I thought this was just another random crazy video to watch out of boredum, but god damn that was a lot of work and pretty interesting. I actually learned a few things. lol. nice work.
I really like this tutorial. I used it for my renaissance festival costume this year, and they looked great - the costume was a huge hit. Unfortunately, they were cracked and chipped within a few hours.
I recently re-did them using the same screen base, only I covered it with Rigid Wrap plaster gauze, including most of the bottom. I filler primer'd the heck outta the whole thing, painted, and thoroughly glazed them (especially the bottom).
@kiboumegami thats freakin awesome, i gotta remember that, thanks for sharing! I'm dabbling in casting right now so i can make highly detailed shells. expensive materials, but i'm starting to get more serious. Man how time flies, its been 2 years since i posted this vid. hmmm rigid wrap. . . sounds like i can use that for some of my molds :)
@pattasy Hey how do you make faun LEGS cause im new at fursuiting and i want to make my own costume but i want to make a faun and a wolf the wolf will be my first fursuit with a head like mask and i want to make a fuan cause i just love the idea of having like goat legs im a fanticey person absest with mythical creatures xp so yea can you tell or if you have a video can you show mw it i realy want to make faun legs
@phyllos the shoe needs to be stiff. meaning that the sole cannot bend at all when you walk, or else the bondo would crack. you might be able to mount normal boots or shoes to a piece of wood to make a stiff sole, then build on that.
@GaaraKittenCosplayer there is actually a tutorial online for hand hooves, but he uses epoxy putty instead, but i'm sure u can use bondo. Google 'hand hooves', and it should be the 1st one in the search results.
Omgosh... I'm inspired now... TY so much for posting this and your other tutorial vids. I've wanted to make my own costume for a while but was't sure how to start. So thank you again!
@lion0121 when i started my new ones i traced a horseshoe onto some wood, cut it, and screwed it to the bottom-this way the bottom will already be fitted to attach a shoe later. if the bondo touches the ground, it'll chip and crack anyway. i'm not using bondo anymore, but when you put the screen around the wood, you'll end up with a gap between the shoe and the screen. I'd suggest you fill it with 'greatstuff' expanding foam so it won't be to flimsy for the bondo.
I confess to a more than healthy dose of skepticism when I saw the approach, but the end result is absolutely fantastic! Excellent job and thanks for the video!
I'll be making faun legs, and your videos are super helpful!! Thanks!!
I'm thinking, because the hooves would chip a little and I'll be walking on them for an entire day, would it be good to put actual metal horseshoes under them? It might prevent the cracking plus it'll make a nice sound, right? I know there are a few blacksmiths for horseshoes near my place. What do you think?
I've followed your video and am now about to start sanding. I have no power sander, but am still excited to get these finished. I've looked thru MANY tutorials and yours is easily the best, i'd be lost without it!
Needless to say they came out great!. It was interesting to see how you got the digitgrade effect without actually being up on "stilts" per say...Course then again..I never looked at a woman's high heel shoe as a "Stilt"...BTW...that music was interesting..."I am a cookie....Do you want to eat me?" oh lol! yeah, ummm, i had some awesome music along with some narration but youtube deleted the audio. They requested that i choose from their super cheesy royalty free library. haha! So, i made my choice :D
Hey I'm making my faun costume right now and I'm having a hard time finding screen and bondo for my hooves is there anything else that I can use that will work just as effectivly?
those items should be very easy to find. the wire window screening you can get at lowes or home depot, hardware stores. the car bondo body filler you can get at walmart in the car section or any auto parts store.
Could we use creative paper clay to replace the car bondo if we can't buy it? or will something happen to the creative paper clay after a certain period of time??
you can try, but paper clay works best with light duty stuff that doesn't come in constant contact with the ground. it should work for a little while, if your careful, but even with the strong bondo i got some cracks in the back. if you put some wood on the bottom or something to elevate the hoof from the ground you should be fine.
i guess you could, just be sure to put something on the bottom so the bondo doesn't come in constant contact with the floor, otherwise it'll chip around the edges. warning though, bondo does get really heavy if you lay it too thick.
Hey Patty, I asked you a few things some time ago.. now I came up with some new questions:
I searched for Car Bondo.. but since I live in germany I asked myself what "car bondo" actually is...
What's the actual use of it? Is it that stuff that they use when there are some bumps or what in a car, just to fill it in there, make it even with the rest of it and re-pant it so it looks like there wasn't an accident?
Sorry for my english... but I need to know what that stuff is, so I can get it!
I actually used this to make the head for my fursuit XD The car bonda is a bit heavy, but it works wonders with the delecate jaws, and horns too X3 Thanks a lot!
your welcome! I found some "new" material to mess with. have you ever tried Aves Apoxie Sculpt? Its a two part clay that when mixed dries hard like a rock. :) much easier to sculp with than bondo if your doing detailed work. It has about an hour work time before it cures. Great stuff! ;) I've only found it online though.
The costume I had last year about 12 people took pictures of it and supposidly I ended up in a local paper in north dakota because of it. This year I'm improving it to be even better. Hoping for more photos this year =P
i got the fur on ebay. it was called tibet fur or something like that. I couldn't find that stuff anywhere in my local stores. Please let me see them when your done! :D
the long brown stuff i got from a 'one time only seller' BUT i got some black fur just like this from parvot9723 from israel. His fur was much nicer. as a matter of fact i'm gonna stick with him. pay attention to the measurements. It's expensive, but the long pile tibet fur is awsome! The back of it is made of a soft sweater material, no itchy stuff! Not as shiny or fake looking either! And it has a light stretch to it. I got it in black. He is happy to answer questions too! :)
lol! i've had these since my college days, i don't remember where. You can find stuff like this anywhere for pretty cheap. Try Ebay, look up "wedge sandal" or "wedge heel" (plus your size). :)
Great video! I have a few questions though. How much should you cut out of the back of the shoe? How do you hide the cut in the back of the shoe, do you just glue the fur over it? It looks like there are pencils stuck inside the shoes after the paper mache, is that just to keep it from falling in on itself or is it permanently there? Lastly what kind or brand of "fur" would you recommend? Thanks for your time and such a great video!
cut out a chunk but leave enough to stand on, its personal preference really. the back of the heel is hidden with fur. the pencils were stuck in there while the paper mache was still wet, so when it dries it wouldn't curl inward, then they were removed. hope that helps ;)
quadroped? I have yet to try one of those. :) glad i could help. be sure to put a piece of rubber or something on the bottom to keep the edge of the bondo from touching the ground, otherwise it'll start to chip a bit. :)
Thanks for much for this awesome tutorial! I'm doing a centuar-styled cosplay very soon and this is the first tutorial i've seen where I thought - hey, I can do this!
you are very welcome, you might want to cut up an oversize flipflop or wood and glue it to the bottom to elevate it some. I noticed that the bondo along the bottom edge started to chip because it came in direct contact with the pavement. :) good luck! send a pic my way i would love to see :)
ive always thought it would be fun to have hooves. ive looked at lots of other set ups but they always looked so chunky and complicated. but these ones look so easy and cheap i think i may be able to pull it off! im sure that theyll end up being a part of my next halloween cosume, thank you so so much!
the hooves actually did pretty well. The fur came up to my hip and was held on by a fancy belt. the top wasn't much, just a green strip of cloth (like you seen on the hooves) tied across the chest. I made some nappy dreads and tied them in my hair along with some wooden beads. fairly simple. i never did fix the legs, but i think i figured out a way how so when i finish i'll probably post a tutorial on what NOT to do, lol! thanks for the comment :)
these were comfortable and they were very stable because i didn't cut much from the back. i made them out of the most comfy sandals i own, and they aren't too heavy. :)
Experimenting and lots of trial and error. I wanted to make a pair of hooves, so i just made up a plan, researched a few products and hoped it would work. ;)
I'm sure i could figure it out, but right off the top of my head, no. well, i guess you could carve it out of foam (like the stuff used for chair cushions) and then cover with fur. If i ever decide to make my cat paws, i'll be sure to post for inspiration. :)
omg this saved my life LOL i didn't know down to do the hooves but now i'm trying this for my Faun costume <333 though i just did the sawing and now my hand hurts XDD
yes i was suprised how hard a shoe was to saw, so i didn't show the process cause i didn't want everyone to see me struggling so hard to cut it. lol! XD
indeed when i made my canine paws i used high heals....it was a job! i had no idea there was a wooden post in them it took me like an hour to saw through the both of them!
Argh, omitted something and youtube doesn't let you edit comments...I'd like to know if the faun hooves you made are brittle, and do they crack or chip easily? Thanks!
if you hit it with a hammer, mabe. Its really good for average impact. the bondo chipped around bottom edge of the hoof, this is only because i was walking on sharp gravel for 7 hours. XD but other than that they held up really well. Armor should be fine. :)
wow thanks! I'm hoping this works...I'll be starting once my college exams are over, in about a month. Hopefully, using papier mache as a base, as opposed to fiberglass, doesn't wind up compromising the integrity of the finished piece!
Great work!!! I'm making some costume armour with many curves. The base form is made in cardboard. I can't afford fiberglass and was looking for alternatives when I found your video. I'd like to know how strong is the bondo + papier mache, how thick a coat would you recommend, and if it's completely rigid or slightly flexible. Thanks!
Hey this is an amazing tuorial!!!
I was wondering does this all take 1 day or if not how many because im moving soon but want to make Faun legs for the cosplay festival here

Getaro 2 years ago
Thats exactly what it is :). It's also called "body filler". That should help. Don't worry, your english is great! :)

Thank you very much!! You're so kind :}
I'll get some shoes soon and then I'll start making my hooves!!

I would wear that all day saying, " yo hey, what up? oh my hooves? yeah...they're real"
IceClanCats 2 years ago
The costume I had last year about 12 people took pictures of it and supposidly I ended up in a local paper in north dakota because of it. This year I'm improving it to be even better. Hoping for more photos this year =P

Doesn't it feel great to be a celebrity for a day? It's an interesting experience having the paparazi follow you around. ;)
pattasy 2 years ago
so my hooves are almost done. where did you get that fur?
shaggygriffon 2 years ago
i got the fur on ebay. it was called tibet fur or something like that. I couldn't find that stuff anywhere in my local stores. Please let me see them when your done! :D
pattasy 2 years ago
do you remember the seller's name? i think i found it but not sur,e if you worked witha guy selling from israel was his fur good?
shaggygriffon 2 years ago
the long brown stuff i got from a 'one time only seller' BUT i got some black fur just like this from parvot9723 from israel. :)

Oh yes, it was the best.
Vegetanthony 2 years ago
where did you get those sandals? how much were they?
shaggygriffon 2 years ago
lol! i've had these since my college days, i don't remember where. You can find stuff like this anywhere for pretty cheap. Try Ebay, look up "wedge sandal" or "wedge heel" (plus your size). :)
pattasy 2 years ago
Or you could even go to PayLess shoes. You could buy a pair there.
PopRocksV 2 years ago
Great video! I have a few questions though. How much should you cut out of the back of the shoe? How do you hide the cut in the back of the shoe, do you just glue the fur over it? It looks like there are pencils stuck inside the shoes after the paper mache, is that just to keep it from falling in on itself or is it permanently there? Lastly what kind or brand of "fur" would you recommend? Thanks for your time and such a great video!
Luckykitsune 2 years ago
cut out a chunk but leave enough to stand on, its personal preference really. the back of the heel is hidden with fur. the pencils were stuck in there while the paper mache was still wet, so when it dries it wouldn't curl inward, then they were removed. hope that helps ;)
pattasy 2 years ago
Thank you ^_^ Once I get all my materials I'll be sure to make a video of myself making these lovely hooves. Thank you again for such a great video!

OMG
Do you do commissions?
I'd love to show up at a rennaisance fair wearing those :3

This is a fantastic technique! I have been working on a quadroped Girafarig costume for a while and the hooves always stumped me, this is perfect!
EverlastingMercury 2 years ago
quadroped? I have yet to try one of those. :) glad i could help. be sure to put a piece of rubber or something on the bottom to keep the edge of the bondo from touching the ground, otherwise it'll start to chip a bit. :)
pattasy 2 years ago
Wow. Those turned out really awesome.

I give you a 10 for creativeness
and a 20 for using my most favorite thing, bondo

Thanks for much for this awesome tutorial! I'm doing a centuar-styled cosplay very soon and this is the first tutorial i've seen where I thought - hey, I can do this!
Lorryll 2 years ago
you are very welcome, you might want to cut up an oversize flipflop or wood and glue it to the bottom to elevate it some. I noticed that the bondo along the bottom edge started to chip because it came in direct contact with the pavement. :) good luck! send a pic my way i would love to see :)
pattasy 2 years ago
ive always thought it would be fun to have hooves. ive looked at lots of other set ups but they always looked so chunky and complicated. but these ones look so easy and cheap i think i may be able to pull it off! im sure that theyll end up being a part of my next halloween cosume, thank you so so much!
MonkeyBonesGeorge 3 years ago
you are very welcome! send a pic my way if you do, i love seeing what others create :) oh, and they are rather fun to walk in! :D

goog job
asi97 3 years ago
the hooves actually did pretty well. The fur came up to my hip and was held on by a fancy belt. the top wasn't much, just a green strip of cloth (like you seen on the hooves) tied across the chest. I made some nappy dreads and tied them in my hair along with some wooden beads. fairly simple. i never did fix the legs, but i think i figured out a way how so when i finish i'll probably post a tutorial on what NOT to do, lol! thanks for the comment :)
pattasy 3 years ago
what did the rest of the costume look like? hope it went well with the hooves, those were AWESOME!!!
ArticAkita 3 years ago
Can you still did instructions the make the legs then even more fauns soon run by the area ^^
Amy436 3 years ago
yes, i need to. :)
pattasy 3 years ago
thank you uber much for putting this back up!
I'm currently trying to figure out the leg part of the costume. If you have any advise that would be wonderful!
I made my hooves from your video! They didn't come out as well but I like them anyways.

Were these comfortable to wear or were they a little unstable? I know the stilt method is tricking and can be quite hard to walk in
amethystducky 3 years ago
these were comfortable and they were very stable because i didn't cut much from the back. i made them out of the most comfy sandals i own, and they aren't too heavy. :)
pattasy 3 years ago
how do you learn all this????
kkfamp 3 years ago
Experimenting and lots of trial and error. I wanted to make a pair of hooves, so i just made up a plan, researched a few products and hoped it would work. ;)
pattasy 3 years ago
thats a cool painting technique
ToastyUploads 3 years ago
Hey, that's a cool technique! ^^ Thanks for sharing.
DinkyKeyChain 3 years ago
thats awesome do u know how 2 make wolf paws?
DethMetalHippie21 3 years ago
I'm sure i could figure it out, but right off the top of my head, no. well, i guess you could carve it out of foam (like the stuff used for chair cushions) and then cover with fur. If i ever decide to make my cat paws, i'll be sure to post for inspiration. :)
pattasy 3 years ago
this is great! just what i was looking for :D
BluePuppy 3 years ago
omg this saved my life LOL i didn't know down to do the hooves but now i'm trying this for my Faun costume <333 though i just did the sawing and now my hand hurts XDD
DuckTapeFreak 3 years ago
yes i was suprised how hard a shoe was to saw, so i didn't show the process cause i didn't want everyone to see me struggling so hard to cut it. lol! XD
pattasy 3 years ago
indeed when i made my canine paws i used high heals....it was a job! i had no idea there was a wooden post in them it took me like an hour to saw through the both of them!
BlueDragonTH 3 years ago
Argh, omitted something and youtube doesn't let you edit comments...I'd like to know if the faun hooves you made are brittle, and do they crack or chip easily? Thanks!
proedian 3 years ago
if you hit it with a hammer, mabe. Its really good for average impact. the bondo chipped around bottom edge of the hoof, this is only because i was walking on sharp gravel for 7 hours. XD but other than that they held up really well. Armor should be fine. :)
pattasy 3 years ago
wow thanks! I'm hoping this works...I'll be starting once my college exams are over, in about a month. Hopefully, using papier mache as a base, as opposed to fiberglass, doesn't wind up compromising the integrity of the finished piece!
proedian 3 years ago
I'd love to see it when you finish. :)
pattasy 3 years ago
Great work!!! I'm making some costume armour with many curves. The base form is made in cardboard. I can't afford fiberglass and was looking for alternatives when I found your video. I'd like to know how strong is the bondo + papier mache, how thick a coat would you recommend, and if it's completely rigid or slightly flexible. Thanks!
proedian 3 years ago
the coat is actually pretty thin, quarter inch maybe. (the stuff is really thick to slop on) its pretty strong, not flexible at all.
