I test fired a few Gold Dot 60 grain in a FN1900 32 cal. Fired directly into wood backstop, the bullets did not expand at all. The cavity on all of them was completely packed with wood. I was surprised at the amount of wood that was packed into the cavity. I expected to see some expansion but none of them opened at all. Bottom line, dont expect expansion if your target is hiding behind a 2 inch thick board. By the way, at ten feet, the bullets traveled almost entirely thru the 1st 2 inches.
@shouldibehere I'm not surprised the round didn't expand in wood as it isn't designed to. It's designed to expand in soft tissue. As far as shooting through barriers, if that is a significant factor to you then using a small caliber with a little over 100 foot pounds of energy pushing a 60 grain bullet probably isn't the best choice.
Any plans to do a short barrel comparison? Im really interested in how a short barrel version would compare to the regular. I cant seem to find a good test to get a comparison. As Speer is the only ones I know of to make a short barrel version and im wondering if its not mostly a gimmik. Your the only one I trust to set the record straight.
Vessels. Not to mention the added damage from the percussion (fp of energy). Granted, there have been those who have been lucky enough to survive due to the bullet luckily missing anything vital. But usually being hit in the torso equals, at minimum, seriously life threatening!
GuerrillaFF...your statement is silly and not accurate. I've seen many a 1 round kill someone (being a paramedic for 15years). There is so much damage being done to organs and velssel
Outta what kinda gun? lets just say its the same G19 in this test. this dude tested fed. hst 147 gr standard and +p. the +p expanded more and penetrated less. just wondering if this would be the case for the gold dot too. i know its a completely different round and might not. actually i cant recall If the hst was the exact same test. ill watch again. oh and MY gun is a taurus pt92
I accidently bought this round in the standard pressure. only seeing videos of the +p. how much diffent you think the lower velocity round will perform? anybody?
@tnote66 Hmm, not much. Generally a +p load in this bullet weight will give you, let's say, from 1050 to 1100 fps. Worth having, but perhaps not worth worrying about. Of course those numbers will vary by bullet type and gun firing the bullet. I carry standard pressure loads or +p just depending on which gun I'm carrying, and do not feel handicapped by the slightly slower round. To each his own, though.
hey have you ever thought of doing two rounds in the block to test if they do wat they supposse to. i would love to see you do a double tap in the block.
I love you Tnoutdoors.... You know in that way a man loves another man... without all the gay stuff in between.. lol anyways great testing. i was able to get my hands on another 250 rounds of this ammo at a really good price. and it made me want to watch this video... AGAIN!
I hate the "but you still wouldnt want to be shot with that.." comment. Most people wouldnt even want to be shot by a BB gun. There is NO handgun cartridge that will kill you in ONE SHOT unless its in the head. PS when in a defensive situation do you only shoot once and ask how he feels?
Do you happen to aim down the sights with your right eye and you're right handed? I had the same problem using my Glock 19. I'm right handed and would naturally aim with my right eye and consistantly shoot low and left. Try moving the gun over a little and aiming with your left eye as primary. That fixed my accuracy problem and hopefully it'll fix yours! Hope I can help!
@theguy2606 Speer uses very effective flash suppressants if that's what you're looking for. Someone else did some low-light tests if you just search it.
Hey bud I posted my first video today.. It's only alittle over a minute cause I took it with my cell phone but it's better than nothing.. I'm gettin a video camera soon and I'm goin to do a good one.. Lemme kno Wut you think.. Thanks bud.. Names Kurt by the way.. Awesome video like always..
When my department in Ohio tested loads, we had much higher velocities out of a five inch barrel. Incidently, officers liked this load better, even though the department went with the 124 grain SXT +p+.
Just like you I carry either +P 124gr Gold Dots, but much more often (95+%) I carry the 147gr HST's....I'm anxiously awaiting the 147gr HST test with the SIM media! Keep up the great vids.
Great test with the Gold dot 124 +p, i don't know witch one will be my main carry. gold dot or the win pdx1. I hear the good and bad about pdx1. so cant wait for its review
Interesting, the wound channel for that cartridge looked to be pretty catastrophic. How does the 4 layers of denim compare to someone wearing say a shirt, sweater, and leather jacket/heavy coat on top of the previous two clothing items?
Yeah, I think I'll be switching from my non-bonded Golden Sabers to some GDHP. My HD gun is a .40, but I can't imagine the end-result performance will be significantly different between the two. Speer's rep, plus every test video I've seen, seems pretty consistent.
Hi thank you for your videos! A question. Between the corbon dpx series and the speer gold dot, which one you believe to be the most effective in terms of expansion and penetration and overall performance in a given caliber?
Hi thank you for your videos! A question. Between the corbon dpx series and the speer gold dot, which one you believe to be the most effective in terms of expansion and penetration and overall performance in a given caliber?
I am starting to see why everyone likes the spear gold dot ammo. It seems very consistent. I have seen many tests now and the results are always rather good. I carry Federal Hydroshok myself, but if I find Gold Dot for a good price, I will not mind having that around as well.
I've never really understood why the penetration is so high. just thinking of most young adults my age, the chest is only about 8-10 inches deep. I would think 13+ would be passing completely through would it not? With that kind of expansion, I wouldn't think you would need a ton of penetration to stop someone
@backwoods223 Not all shots are coming from the front. You want a bullet to perform equally well if you shot someone from it's side and in an angle. In such case the distance the bullet needs to reach a vital organ gets longer.
@backwoods223 You have to have enough penetration so that in most situations the bullet can reach the persons vitals. Lots of times peoples arms are in front of them so the bullet has to travel through their arm, then into their chest. Plus what if you hit bone etc..... Also law enforcement shoot into cars all the time so you have to take that into account.
I haven't heard of people switching self-defense rounds based upon the season/temperature. The only thing I can think of is how much clothing people typically wear during winter, and wanting a heavier bullet for more penetration. What is the reason for switching rounds?
@binyamj And I'm sure there is a big difference where he lives to places like where I live.. He lives in Tn where it gets reasonably warm in the summer and downright cold in the winter. It Ca near the capital, even during the winter, the heaviest jacket I will wear will be a hoodie.. It just doesn't get cold enough to warrant big heavy jackets out here.. So I could see switching ammo.. (Although I think getting hit by any bullet no matter how layered would be quite unpleasant)
I too would be very interested in seeing how a less expensive defensive loads would do. Either the Remington or the Winchester white box. Both are available from Walmart and are accurate reasonably priced.
Istead of using the Glock for your tests, why not try a Beretta or XD or S&W M&P? How about some tests using subcompacts with 3 to 3.5 inch barrels?
I've been using the G19 for all my tests and don't plan to change that approach, even if I add another 9mm. I did look at a Beretta M9 over the weekend. The G19 is an extremely popular carry gun. I would not expect a noticable difference between other makes and models, and little variance with barrel length. If you take all of those models plus the hundreds of requests I have to test various ammo, it leads to more combinations than the hash brown possibilities at Waffle House.
Do a test on Remington 115 JHP from Walmart the price is $24 for a box of 50 rounds I paid $25 a box of 20 Gold Dot thats $1.20 a bullet, the Walmart are about 20 cents a bullet. I have 2 boxes are they a good expanding round? Curious people want answers? Do the Walmart Remington work as advertised? If so they are a great value? Glock 19 gen 4 rock, so many sorry complains its a greta gun. Both with the #03 or #04 spring. Test these Remington and let see how they do. Glock Rocks, Thanks.
I'll get around to those. Best I recall, I didn't even test the Remingtons in wetpack. FWIW, the Winchester economy rounds (WWB) generally did not perform well (clogging and/or jacket seperation), but they will get another chance in SIM-TEST.
Very good test. The reflection of the bullet on the scale was showing under the expansion wings as well like a mirror. A very interesting effect. It makes me wonder was the bullet a little light as a tare weight or did a small fragment escape lowering weight. If so when you reheat and skim you may find it. A very good reputation load.
This load and Winchester PDX1 124gr+P are my two preferred loads for my full-size pistols, although I'd put the Gold Dots just a hair higher because you can get them in boxes of 50 for the same price as (or less than) what it costs for a box of 25 of the PDX1 (around $25). Can't use 'em in my Kel-Tec P11, though - just too much recoil and muzzle flash for that little bugger. Great test video, as always!
Great video as always! Gold Dots are just superb rounds, they do very well in our gel test also, never been let down on a Gold Dot. Thanks for the great video, keep them up!!!
That is it.....I want the heavier round for punching through heavier clothing. I don't have a problem with either of my loads year-round. The Gold Dot is easier to acquire vs. the Federal HST. Comparing 147's, I like the characteristics of the HST better compared to the Gold Dot. I will be testing both of these in SIM-TEST.
Great job, TN9er! Might pick up some of this ammo for my carry 9s. Currently, I use Federal 9BPLE for my9s and Winchester Ranger 155gr 40 S&W (RA40155HP) for my 40 cal carry guns and would also like to see how those do... I'd even be willing to send ya a few rounds to check 'em out!
@cvillebuck Just a guess heavier load heavier clothing when its colder. When its warm lighter gun and ammo is more comfortable and people tend to wear less in the warmth.
With the resent popularity of the Taurus Judge for personal and home protection, do you plan to ever do a sim-test on the Winchester personal defence PDX1 .410 shotshell?
thanks for the test. I have winchester 147 gr SXT for my 9mm, I dont carry the 9mm anymore, I use the G27 and Sp101 .40 and .357 with the .45 acp on night guard. (1911)
I'm watching for a fair deal on a G19 and a G23, it should round out my pistols.
wish I had a chance to do more shooting, especially in my yard. :-)
Gold Dots are great defensive round. This is the round my department issues for those that still carry a 9mm. and it has a great track record. Everyone else carries 230gr Gold Dots.
Thanks once again for going to the trouble of doing this test. We spoke briefly before you adopted the new test medium on the topic of this and the HST 147 and you mentioned how you change between the two for your carry choice. Although I think I understand the logic behind using a heavier load in winter (in theory greater penetration to counter potentially thicker and more layers of clothing, what is your reasoning for using the different brand? Is it as simple as availability? Thanks.

Great job again. This is also my preferred carry load when I carry my G19.

For below:
Ammunition to go has 50ct Gold Dots 124 +p for $24.99 often.
Just get 50 vs the box of 20 or 25. Then the price is similar and you can use a well performing 124 vs a ? 115.
I would think in 115 you'd go for a Federal 9BP or 9BPLE. The regular 9BP can be found for $17.99 for 50. And "street proven".

@surfside006
I'll get around to those. Best I recall, I didn't even test the Remingtons in wetpack. FWIW, the Winchester economy rounds (WWB) generally did not perform well (clogging and/or jacket seperation), but they will get another chance in SIM-TEST.

love your tests, good result and good weight retention on a +p
pjicleanair420 10 months ago

Great test video, as always!
darkwriter77 10 months ago
Great video as always! Gold Dots are just superb rounds, they do very well in our gel test also, never been let down on a Gold Dot. Thanks for the great video, keep them up!!!

Performed perfect. After watching ballistic tests like this, I don't get how anyone can say 9mm is not a good SD round.

Where do you buy your speer gold dots? Online? I can't find it anywhere locally.

@MrGreenJelly
Yeah, pretty weird my local shops don't have it in stock.

Gold Dots are tops. I don't see a problem carrying them year-round. NYC cops don't switch them out come winter.
myantispambox 10 months ago 4
@myantispambox he switchs out the loading from the 124gr to the 147gr the added weight from the bullet
is more weight to push though coatsand sweaters
camerl2009 10 months ago
@camerl2009

Any plans to test the Federal HST 147gr with the new Sim-Test ballistics gelatin?

Great job, TN9er! Might pick up some of this ammo for my carry 9s. Currently, I use Federal 9BPLE for my9s and Winchester Ranger 155gr 40 S&W (RA40155HP) for my 40 cal carry guns and would also like to see how those do... I'd even be willing to send ya a few rounds to check 'em out!

I propose that you test Corbon DPX 9mm 115 Gr. +P

the 9mm alos doesnt have that much kick either
WillyMunga 10 months ago
What's the correlation between your preferred load and the season?
cvillebuck 10 months ago
@cvillebuck Just a guess heavier load heavier clothing when its colder. When its warm lighter gun and ammo is more comfortable and people tend to wear less in the warmth.
condition145 10 months ago
With the resent popularity of the Taurus Judge for personal and home protection, do you plan to ever do a sim-test on the Winchester personal defence PDX1 .410 shotshell?
artemerysr 10 months ago
thanks for the test.
marvintheboon 10 months ago
I love it when you shoot these +P Gold Dots. Thanks for sharing.

Gold Dots are great defensive round. This is the round my department issues for those that still carry a 9mm. and it has a great track record. Everyone else carries 230gr Gold Dots.

Good Round I want to get Speer Gold Dot in 147 gr

Thanks once again for going to the trouble of doing this test. We spoke briefly before you adopted the new test medium on the topic of this and the HST 147 and you mentioned how you change between the two for your carry choice. Although I think I understand the logic behind using a heavier load in winter (in theory greater penetration to counter potentially thicker and more layers of clothing, what is your reasoning for using the different brand? Is it as simple as availability? Thanks.
lazaglider 10 months ago
That's great expansion.
With a Taylor KO of 12 it's almost as good as an unexpanded 230 grainer at 900 fps.
vyxaer 10 months ago
@vyxaer
Taylor KO is nonsense

YES, I plan to test the greatest majority of loads that I ran through wetpack.
