Every musician takes from others that's how music evolves. Even the Beatles took from others that influenced them. So stop bitching and enjoy music for what it is!
Many people talk about how the guitar and bass line are just like Taxman but to me that's the beauty of The Jam. They combined the best of The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks and created their own unique version of each.
It took a band with as much class as the Jam to show the Beatles how to use this bassline properly. The Beatles used it as a cheeky b*tch to the amount of taxes they payed (nice progressive views guys), while Weller used it to write about the fleeting/difficult nature of human interaction. Sublime.
Start! is better than Taxman..."and what you give is what you get..." I love that! Classic! This song is like Salvador Dali's "Ghost of Vermeer" painting, and Taxman is like Johannes Vermeer's "The Art Of Painting" painting.......
I love americans who think they own the rights to every beatles song they hear and just because paul weller and foxton use the bassline from taxman they immediately call it shit, idiots!
@BadBoiDaz08Wolves You know what a moron you sound like.Iam an american been a jam fan for 30 years, own rights to beatle songs?????????????????????????who calls it shit?????????Ive met Mr Weller a couple of times great guy your post is a joke.
LISTEN! This is meant to sound like Taxman, Weller and Foxton are on record stating that they ripped the bassline from Taxman, it was a sign of appreciation, they never tried to punt it on as their own. Think about it, they're Mod revival, theres a massive chance people into MoD (and therefore listening to them) would have also heard the Beatles (who weren't MoD - for the benefit of our yank chums). They never ripped it.
@marlboroman1985 Yeah, they sound the same because they are the same, Weller is on record saying this was a direct rip of the Taxman bassline, it was his way of showing his appreciation.
@skatemantehehe123 . . . brilliant, and I'd add the words inspired and influenced . . . as Mr Weller has maintained all along . . . definitely, the bass line is an exact copy. What confuses me is why Paul McCartney wasn't pissed off and suing. He was probably too busy rolling in piles of money to care.
