  • it is a quality base line. and a quality song.

  • the fact that the bass line is (on purpose) identical to Taxman does not diminish the greatness of this song!

  • Every musician takes from others that's how music evolves. Even the Beatles took from others that influenced them. So stop bitching and enjoy music for what it is!

  • this IS taxman.

  • The Jam ADMITTED that they nicked the bass line. I think this is a great song.

  • Many people talk about how the guitar and bass line are just like Taxman but to me that's the beauty of The Jam. They combined the best of The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks and created their own unique version of each.

  • Moving on from the Baseline, these guys where ahead of there time and did some great songs.!

  • It took a band with as much class as the Jam to show the Beatles how to use this bassline properly. The Beatles used it as a cheeky b*tch to the amount of taxes they payed (nice progressive views guys), while Weller used it to write about the fleeting/difficult nature of human interaction. Sublime.

  • So...The Jam were huge Beatles fans, this was no coincidence or ripping off of Taxman, it was an homage.

  • Should 5% appear too small

be happy I don't take... wait a second...

  • Start! is better than Taxman..."and what you give is what you get..." I love that! Classic! This song is like Salvador Dali's "Ghost of Vermeer" painting, and Taxman is like Johannes Vermeer's "The Art Of Painting" painting.......

  • I love americans who think they own the rights to every beatles song they hear and just because paul weller and foxton use the bassline from taxman they immediately call it shit, idiots!

  • @BadBoiDaz08Wolves You know what a moron you sound like.Iam an american been a jam fan for 30 years, own rights to beatle songs?????????????????????????who calls it shit?????????Ive met Mr Weller a couple of times great guy your post is a joke.

  • LISTEN! This is meant to sound like Taxman, Weller and Foxton are on record stating that they ripped the bassline from Taxman, it was a sign of appreciation, they never tried to punt it on as their own. Think about it, they're Mod revival, theres a massive chance people into MoD (and therefore listening to them) would have also heard the Beatles (who weren't MoD - for the benefit of our yank chums). They never ripped it.

  • "...Should five per cent appear too small. Be thankful I don't take it all. 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman--"

Oh, whoops. Sorry. These two songs sond identical.

  • @marlboroman1985 Yeah, they sound the same because they are the same, Weller is on record saying this was a direct rip of the Taxman bassline, it was his way of showing his appreciation.

  • @marlboroman1985 Oooh...get you, smartarse...

  • MOD 4 LIFE <3

  • (My english is bad) The sound is similar a Taxman, The Beatles.

  • You can't do wrong with a Beatles riff....well, rappers can, but rockers definitely can't do wrong

  • @GARYmoorePHILlynott Bring back any days rather than nowadays. ;¬()

  • .... o.o uh... why are they playing tax man but singing different lyrics?

  • They got the rights from the Beatles...it was not a rip off.

  • @TheBassmaster1986 . . . wow man, unreal and totally pertinent bit of info, didn't have clue !!! thanks !!!

  • Does it matter if they stole the riff it's still a great song

  • eh I don't even care if they did steal the riff. Music is art and as Pablo Picasso once said "the bad artists imitate. The great artists steal"

    Long live the Jam!

  • @skatemantehehe123 . . . brilliant, and I'd add the words inspired and influenced . . . as Mr Weller has maintained all along . . . The Beatles stole their schtick as well as the Stones, the Who ad nauseum, not too mention that theiving little bugger Elvis Parsley . . . not too much new under the rock and roll sun, just swings and roundabouts . . . history and heritage, hand in glove. Cheers Skateman !!!

  • Tough guy Paul Weller just ripped off the Beatles. The JAM song is pretty bogus.

  • This is just "Taxman" by the Beatles! What absolute idiots! Write your own!

  • Did George Harrison ever sue the Jam for this tune. They obviously stole the "riff" from Taxman

  • Start!.....

  • Great song but sounds like Beatles, "Taxman."

  • @cwelch333 I think the bass line is purposely obvious. The album has a lot of Revolver references. But yeah, it's the note for note bass line.

  • @cwelch333 You don't understand music. Likewise to the people going on about Oasis, who cares that they arrived after, they fucking suck anyway.

  • Cause I'm the tax man yeaaah yeah the tax maannnnn

  • Try BAN, MOD GIRLS, fantastic tune!

  • Saw Weller live in Dublin yesterday. Twas good crac!

  • i love the beatles

  • HAPPY WEDNESDAY ,,SONG OF THE DAY!

  • What would you give for that custom rickenbacker 330?...and I don't mean just to put it staright on Ebay either, I'm talking to the kids from the grimy late 70's of britain.

  • Fan funkin tastic!!!

  • Only the beginning sounds like taxman :P

  • sounds like the Sgt peppers

  • TAXMAN DO DUH DO DO DODOD !

  • In the song "Start wearing riff is a direct call to" Taxman "by George Harrison.

This proves the "great echo" made the best band ever -- The Beatles

  • Best upload of --"Start"!!!

JAM--One of the best and most popular British band.

No doubt- guys are experts with deep knowledge of things!

Shame, this era is lost forever!!

  • this is the song where beck stole the new polution beat and riff

  • jajajaja that is taxman!!! OMG XD

  • UP UR ARSE TAXMAN. Paul Weller = God.

  • FANTASTIC SONG BOYS

  • There were few singles out at the time cut as well as this one so as to hear the heavy bass line.

    Way ahead of it's time

  • POW !

  • awesome !!! fuck taxman !!!

  • Comment removed

  • haha I noticed the Taxman beat too haha nice catch

  • Especially in the sound he's got going in that solo.

  • Sigh... Paul.

  • dis die bee nees!!!!

  • huu cares it fuckin rocks!

  • Ritz NYC ca 1980

  • Liam Gallagher tried to style himself on Paul Weller with a bit of John Lennon thrown in. What a joke. No-one will ever replace Paul Weller or Lennon

  • Except Liam Gallagher, he's quite good.

  • jamescropley are you really that thick? the jam were around for years before oasis so how could they rip them off? silly boy

  • has anyone noticed this song bears more than a passing resemblance to the Beatles song 'Yellow Submarine' from Revolver?

  • First of all, "Yellow Submarine" was not on Revolver. Second, No. There is no resemblance whatsoever to "Yellow Submarine." You're thinking of "Tax Man."

  • definitely, the bass line is an exact copy. What confuses me is why Paul McCartney wasn't pissed off and suing. He was probably too busy rolling in piles of money to care.

  • .. yess the bass is so the BEATLES TAxman''george harrison song'' from revolver....IT HAS -LENNONS GHOP RHY GTR.. MACCA'S BASS.. AND EVEN A CRACK AT THE LEAD GTR.. WHICH WAS ALSO DONE BY Paul mccartney... but i love it better than the beatles-because george words are dull

  • the words are gd for the times.....everyone else was singin bout love...beatles had done it already

  • well yellow submarine is from the revolver album..

  • Hey Carlos. First of all, "Yellow Submarine," WAS on Revolver. Come on get straight. Geez, I tell ya, this generation is something else. Later Alligator.

  • dick

  • You do know the Jam came before Oasis?

    You silly dipshit.

  • @jamescropley I love Oasis and I'm just getting into the Jam but mate it's people like you that make others hate Oasis, open up your ears son, this is one of Noel Gallagher's main influences

  • @jamescropley

how can the jam be a rip off band of oasis if the jam were before oasis' time?

there's only one thing that matters in the jam to me , Sir John Paul Weller - The Modfather

  • @BRees94 agree big time who the folk are the gallaghers..... bring on the mod father <3

  • @matinism well i know who the gallaghers are, who the folk are you..?

  • @BRees94 i believe this is a rip off the beatles taxman however.

  • @jamescropley what a fuckin' arse you are

  • @jamescropley except it was recorded like 15 years before......bellend

  • one of my jam favourites!

  • Before The Clash- there was The Jam!

    hell yeah!

  • are you sure,b4 the clash?

  • TUNE!!!!

  • fuck! I want his guitar!

  • I was 12 when i heard the lyric "and what you give is what you get"

If only i'd knew then that there'd never been a truer lyric written.

  • Amazing! I Love It!!!!

  • Can we stop with the Beatles' pish please....... This is The Jam..... And if u listen to The Enemy they are themselves.......... Everbody has idols ffs........ The 1st band took their name from WHO? NB11

  • but Weller whole career is full of this type of obvious plagerisim. another cracker is The changing man is ELO (10538 overture)

  • yeah and so do all the other musicians like oasis etc but i bet you dont slate them and theyre a pair of wankers with big egos

  • @janicepjam . . . damn right, pair of right twats !!!

  • i hear the similarity between those tracks, but his whole career ,? come on...your madder than syd barret

  • one of their best.....

  • One of the Irvine Welsh favourite song!!

    cool!! ;-p

  • the boys at their best. thanx 4 postin.

  • @whitbyjet65 You must definitely have a protein deficiency. ;¬)

  • @Johnzoil raw brutal music from the thatcher years powerful

  • Yea, the days when music was for listening to, not background noise.

  • @Johnzoil

    ooooh errr matron!

  • @usxs58draw HattieJaques wasn't my cup of tea.

  • BEATLES ROCK AND SO DO THE JAM!

    My fav. bands

  • The Jam was, sadly a short lived band (split up well before I was even born), but they ended out on top with "Beat Surrender" as their swan song.

  • Unfuckingbelievable bass line......

  • Yes it is. Based on The Beatles 'Taxman' from the 'Revolver' LP.

  • I think it's also based on The Beatles "Drive My Car".

  • Great quality

  • LOVE THIS TUNEEEEEEE!

  • la meilleure chanson de toutes....Paul tellement beau un réve...

  • Ah the Jam kicks it!

  • The Jam are amazing, the bassline is so so good

  • bassline :D

why dont we here more of that quality today? :(

  • Listen to that bassline! Noone is this good anymore! Look at the young Weller! LOL what is he like 18 here?! LOL

  • 25 or 26, he was born '58 this is 84

  • More like 1980

  • yeah this is from Sound Effects (1980)

  • '84?The jam was long gone by then.

  • I may have got the year of the song wrong, but i know for a fact that the jam were not long gone by 84. They split up in 84, unless long gone is sometime less than a year.

  • The jam played their last live shows sometime in late 1982 and I think they even announced their breakup right before.Paul Weller formed Style Council in Spring of '83.Don't believe me, just wikipedia it, but I bought their EPin late '83.You're confused, but you know good music!

  • no they split up in 83 and formed the style council who broke up in 89

  • i know , i know. I just got my nubers mixed up :S.

  • Banging tune

  • mint song

  • no m8 ur not the only 1 to notice the taxman link lol i noticed it straight away coz i was gettin in2 the beatles at the same time i was gettin in2 the jam

  • punk rock/mod revival? huh.

  • amazing band!!!

  • Taxman!!! Good cover of The Beatles song.

  • When you think about it, all the great Manchester rock bands borrow from the greats of the past. All of them. Oasis. The Stone Roses. Even The Smiths. Yet, they were honest about it and made those influences great again and more importantly, why we loved them in the first place. As for The Jam, I've always loved them, even though their records never sold here in America. In fact, this was the first Jam record I bought!

  • oi, the jam were from woking southwest london mate

  • And Bruce looks like a Cardinal ;)

  • Yeah, the Jam were from Woking but still a valid point

  • cos im the taxman

  • I love Paul's guitar!

  • WHAM!

  • Thanks for the video clip...what a Great Band! Jam It Up!!!

  • Can't help lovin this!!!

  • Love it, even though they did borrow most of it from "Taxman" --- played the hell out of this at the Ritz on 11th Street, NYC, circa 1980. Along with Kraftwerk "TransEurope Express", XTC, etc etc..... Ahh, the good old dayz....

  • great song, even though they nicked hald of it from TAXMAN!!

  • ..."and what you give is what you get",

    love this x
