  • This isn't his greatest, but we must remember that to sing a line as pure as that at 63 is an astounding achievement, one that just about no other tenor could emulate.

  • Mario Lanza a small voice? Hehe no not at all. He had a huge voice, and would have continued with more opera, but he died too early. It's a very sad story.

  • Too late for this aria... but still a great singer at 63 !

  • too late???? to late what ??? It's "Cosi fan tutte" of Mozart, not "Otello" of Verdi !!!!

  • Why are you talking about Otello ? ... ! ! !

  • Because you said "too late for this aria", this aria don't require a great volume (how an aria of "Otello"). Anyway the voice of Kraus was still perfect !!!

  • We don't care (me and everybody) about volume... The matter is a fresh voice or not : the voice is still good for many opera, but not for this composer and not for COSI, and not especially with this aria which requires freshness and sweet legato : no more freshness here and evident difficulties to sing in tune. Still a great artist but TOO LATE here...

  • Just a question. "Who are your favourite singer ? And do you like Bocelli as singer ?

  • So, no, i don't considerer the very small voice of Bocelli as a voice of an opera singer : he is less than Mario Lanza whose voice was small too. And Bocelli have no sense of interpretation.

  • Ok, I agree: Bocelli is not an opera singer at all. it is a shame that he sings the grand operas.

  • If you are referring to the amoroSA (ah vowel at the end of the first phrase) and the del-lo at the beginning of thge next phrase, i hear more thinness then pitch issue. The thin sound isnt as centered on the pitch, this is in fact due to his elder age so i agree with you there. But I am not a fan of what you say about Lanza. Unless you had heard him live you do not know the size of his voice, he sounds as powerful on his records as any other voice. If you are a huge opera fan, I...

  • understand why you dislike Lanza, he does like 1/10 of what a real opera singer does, he basically just sings the arias and acts in scenes in front of 0 live audience and can stop and go, plus he sings most of the opera arias incorrectly. But he had more emotion in his voice then most singers can show combined. And he was highly praised by those aournd him, I highly doubt his v oicewas small. What is a small voice anyway, its about how it carries, size isn't always number one in importance.

  • Obviously you say clever things... Lanza was a cool artist who gave something fresh and sincere through pictures and recordings. And Bocelli too. But i talk about real opera singers : and this is something very different. As you wrote : live audience, no microphone... I'm a baritone : i can sing in studio LE CID MASSENET "O souverain" which is a pure tenor aria... But if you ask me to sing it live, i say NO! This is the kind of diffence i talk about...

  • So :

From the past : Tito Schippa, John Mac Cormack, Alfredo Kraus (for Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte- not here...-,Pêcheurs de perles, Barbiere di Siviglia...), Aureliano Pertile, GIACOMO LAURI-VOLPI, Franco Corelli...

Nowadays : Juan Diego Florez (a beautiful artist really), Joseph Calleja (a serious voice) and the interesting Jonas Kauffman...

  • Ok, you have some acquaintance, but I'm sorry, you are a little confused about freshness voice and legato. And especially about the tune, don't say stupid things !!! No one can talk about the tune when talk about Kraus !!! He was always perfect in tune, no way !!!!!!!!

  • I never say stupid things : try to listen the beginning of the aria and perhaps, you will have a little idea of what i say...

  • I listened the beginning, anyway keep your reason and goodbye.

  • Florez is unbeatable in most Rossini, but he can be a bit shouty sometimes. Calleja is good, but sounds too much like Bjorling for him to interest me in his own right (no aspersions on his talent, mind).

I love Laurence Brownlee for the warmth and power in his voice. And recently I've discovered Topi Lehtipuu who is a beautiful singer.

    As for Kauffman, we'll see...

  • Well I cannot hear here any tuning problems at all.

  • los pelos como escarpias

  • find the ames a mis recording when he was 70.. youll fuck your brains out.. though some notes wobble, he can still sing hi-c!!

  • ive always thought Kraus had a beautiful voice, especially in his younger days. Best of luck to any of you idiots who say he doesnt. He was still singing like that and he was 63.

  • My word, look at his eyes when he sings the As. Why does he contort his face like that when he sings?

At 2:45-2:55 it looks like he lost his place in the score.

  • no seria el mejor... pero a ver que cantante con 63 años se atreve conservando esa voz, con una técnica que ya quisieran muchos hoy en dia... Por siempre kraus...

  • bravissimo alfredo krauss, one of the best of the 20th century, long live mozart

  • 1 of the greatest technicians the world will ever see:) But, un4tunately, he did not have a beautiful voice:( Very white & all mask. The very last note he sings right B4 the very last ending phrase is neglected. It's neglected because it's a "low" note. He avoided anything that touched his chest voice. He always kept it in a high position. I think he could've made those lower notes "rounder." It's too dull the way he does it. Leonard Warren was the same exact way. But he made his low 1s round:)!

  • To me it further sounds strained and sometimes flat. Also, he misses the bus at "al cor che" at 1:14 - he starts too late and makes a pretty mess for the orchestra.

  • Look at the face on the higher notes - he's working all those facial muscles and eyebrows. He really gets the sound into "the mask", and demonstrates for us how he accomplishes it. His voice is a thread of gold.

  • a quel cornificius22vain ....you do not know nothing about music....Kraus's voice was the most beautiful between tenors!!!!!

  • he administers well his voice, yet he simply does not sing beautifully.

  • Bravo!!!

  • À 63 ans, en concert, incroyable. Quel grand artiste, BRAVO!!!!
