The instrument at the start is an oboe. How do I know? I play an oboe everyday. Hahaha. Though I'm not sure about this sounding like Debussy. Keep in mind there are only so many notes and chords to choose from. Yes there are endless possibilities but in the end every song you listen to will have something similar.

The video has to do with the movie The Matrix. These kids find a spot that's like a "glitch" in the system where physics and such don't apply. The Animatrix was a compilation of smaller movies that were side stories to The Matrix trilogy. Stories of people that were normal or not Neo. It's a pretty cool movie, a different view point on things. Goes great with this song cause STARS is awesome.

Indeed, they're fantastic and have made it into mainstream airplay. They're shows are well attended globally. Music supervisors for The L Word (for sure) and The O.C. (I believe) have placed Stars singles into episodes.

Stars has stated in interviews that they don't want to get big. They love playing for small crowds in a small, intimate type atmosphere. I agree with you, but I don't think we need to worry about them "getting popular". To them, it's all about the music. That rare to find these days.
