it all depends on how much tnt is concentrated in1 area. if you 1000 tnt compressed in a cube (like u did) then there will be lag than if 1000 tnt scattered in clumps will

I think there is a mod to sorta fix the lag caused by TNT, also get Single aplayer Commands mod if you want to do more so you can just use World Edit commands instead of placing 5000 or whatever.
