Actually I think the "lightning" is real, but we don't know for sure. To me I think it is real. I saw a video on YouTube that someone was in a cage very high voltage of lightning from his tesla coil.

They way that the people of set were safe was that the cage was in the middle of the coils and the "lightning" was just hitting the ground and the cage.
