The Mexican word 'gringos' comes from the fact that this song was quite popular in the U.S. during the 1830's. The Mexicans got so sick of hearing Americans sing ing it that they started calling us 'gringos' (green-grows). This is according to a book I read on the prints of Currier and Ives. Personally, I like it.
I've heard this song in many variants and I think, other than Kris Drever's, this is my favourite. The melody line and your vocal part weave with each other divinely.
Best thing I've heard in a long time and it's a quick skit to a webcam. Get it published.
Beautiful work, 5 stars!! I was wondering could you help me out? I really need the guitar chords as I want to do this for my Leaving Cert music practical and it would be a great help as I can't find them anywhere!
if you hear any irish traditional songs you'll notice not everyone sings them with thte same lyrics. sometimes its to put your own twist on it, and other times its jus because someone misheard the lyrics and it was passed down from there on. but gud to know you like the song too.
But my fav part is I once was as happy as the red blushing rose But now am as pale as the lily that grows Like the tree in the garden with it's beauty all gone Can't you see what I've come to from the loving of one? sry i had to divide it up so then i could say all i wanted :) He's gone and hes left me I'm here all alone And since he has left me content I must be I know he loves someone far better then me I wrote him a letter so loving and kind He wrote me another with sharp bitter lines....
Oh, by the way: nice voice! I shared your video on Facebook.

Saying, keep your love letters and I will keep mine
And you write to your love and I'll write to mine
That's all I am too tired to write anymore ;)

That's not the true lyrics. Its like this
Green grows the laurel and soft falls the dew
Sad was my my heart when I parted from you
And in our next meeting I hope you'll prove true
Never change the green laurel for the red white, and blue
I once had a sweetheart but now he is gone...
