I loved both CC and Alomas Ruler. CC was pure speed and Aloma was the little Maryland based horse that could. I remember hearing the surprise winner of this race at the time but never saw it before. Thanks CF.
My brother in-law had taped this race and subsequently taped over it, leaving a 1/2 hour of the race left.
I happened to have the tape and had fallen asleep watching it, and when I awoke, the race was just starting. I was like, " Oh, what the heck, I'll watch this race then go to bed."
I was treated to the best race I ever saw!
I remember thinking that Runaway Groom wasn't even in the frame of the TV until the final turn.
yes-some facts about R.G. He Was the "only "Horse, in the Trainers hands at the time .AND AFTER THIS RACE THE OWNER TOOK HIM AWAY FROM THE tRAINER AND HE NEVER DID BECOME WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE...This was a very competitive field and he did excel in the breeding shed. the film after the race shows the Trainer being ,[who did a marvelous ,underappreciated job]being jostled and ignored by the interviewers ,Because of all the embarressment this Horse caused . RIGHT -ON RUNAWAY,,,,,
Pace makes the race. They went fast early and paid for it in the end. All Jeffrey Fell had to do was to sit behind and wait for them to come back. Aloma's Ruler ran the gutsiest race of them all.
Love how he said "and RUNAWAY GROOM...FROM CANADA, moves up!" It was as if he had actually closed from Canada.
Not only that, Runaway Groom is by FAR the best sire of this bunch, and has many excellent children, such as Cherokee Run. He was just a late bloomer who was a lot more worthy of victory here than any of the other four.
Alomas Ruler was one of my alltime favorites. This horse had solid-steel balls. My ex-brother in law knew the guy who trained him(forget his name now). I saw him run second to a damn good horse in his own right, Wavering Monarch, in the '82 Haskell. Look at how he dogged CC the whole way; and when Runaway Groom ran by the two of them in the deep streth, watch how he turned his head, dug in and went after him. Great race.
The intro sounds as if it is Harvey Pack, the longtime host of the NYRA replay show before John Imbriale and now Jason Blewitt. The actual call is by Marshall Cassidy, who called this race for both NYRA and CBS.
He is not a gray he is a bay which I believe his dam Scotchbonnetpepper is. He did not do incredibly well on the track and that is how he has found his way into my life but he has the best disposition and work ethic. Haha I think it was his name that cursed him. His registered name is Runaway Pokey
Great Runaway Groom, on the heavenly green fields if you meet my sweet horse, the hungaryan derby winner THUNDER GROOM, your grandgrandson, say big hi to him!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this race live. What a pleasure to watch Jeffrey Fell work this horse in the post-parade. He was asking for dressage movements like shoulder-in and half-pass in trot as a warm up. People thought I was crazy to bet the horse-look at the field he beat. When Cassidy called the 3/4's in 10 and 3 I thought it could be all him-and you know what -it was a text book off the pace trip to win. What a thrill to see that ride. Thanks for posting it. It brought back so many great memories.
That is absolutely wonderful to read! Comments like this just enhance the special place this race has in racing history. I thank you for the great insight and sentiments about Runaway Groom. He sure had incredible closing speed. Thanks for watching. Take care.
Runaway Groom from Canada moves up! Love the excitment in Marshall Cassidys voice. I think he was stunned to see him move up coming from from no where. Thanks for the thrill!
Hello, I'm from South Korea. (I'm not good at english, sorry)
I love all of your posted videos about famous horses. It's very hard to find such videos in Korea.
Runaway Groom is one of my favorite horse.
In Korea, the grandson of Runaway Groom is selected the best 3yo horse. you can see the videos of his races in my blog. you may easily know who he is.
Hi, fallight. Thank you for your very kind words. I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos. Your english is very good. ^_^ I will most definitely check out your videos. I am intrigued to see if The Groom's grandson has the same finishing kick as he did. Thanks again for posting your comments. Take care and God bless.
Yeah, that was Marshall Cassidy. He was the NYRA circuit announcer from 1979 to 1990, when he was replaced by Tom Durkin.
Cassidy certainly had a style all his own. He seemed as though he could have been at home as radio host for Sunday afternoon opera. Very classy. I remember thinking towards the end of his career he was becoming a bit dry, but not in the 82 Travers.
I too am Canadian and was in the stands for this race which remains my single greatest thrill as a race fan. I told my buddy all week the "Groom" was going to win and at the start he commented "It looks as though someone has been left behind". Needless to say, he ate his words all the way back to Toronto. The "Groom" in this race defeated the three separate winners of the 1982 Triple Crown Races: Gato Del Sol (Derby), Aloma's Ruler (Preakness), and Conquistador Cielo (Belmont).
Wow, you saw that live? What a sensational experience that must have been for you! Thanks for sharing that great story. This race is of one my all-time favourites for the absolute grit Runaway Groom showed when he dug in and kicked after AR & CC after being pretty much overlooked by the racecaller. He sounded THRILLED when RG came up to challenge. I know I was! I still get chills from watching it. Glad you enjoyed it, gcb. Take care.
Marshall Cassidy is my all time FAVORITE race caller. The great thing about that call is the surprise you can hear in his voice. I imagine he had his binoculars trained on AR and CC and the "Groom" appeared out of nowhere in his view, quite unexpectedly. Most fans in the stands looked absolutely STUNNED after the race. And me, well, I lost my voice during the stretch run.
I still think Landaluce should have been 1982 Horse of the Year

I have a gelding out of Runaway Groom, and he has the hugest heart out of any horse I've owned. Definitely a fan of the Runaway Groom lines.

I am a proud owner of a gelding sired by Groom and he looks exactly like him. Thanks for this wonderful video! It gave me goosebumps.

Had anyone known how strong the Blushing Groom line was at the time, this horse NEVER would have paid 17-1.
Blushing Groom is THE dominant sire in rcing. Take a look at what he's left in his progeny.

what a field, just let them run, don't matter who wins,..Harvey, what a narrator, gives you goosebumps

lol, duh I know Runaway GROOM is gray. There was another comment here about my horse, Runaway POKEY who is a RG son, my horse is the bay.

what a great heart this horse has! I will be at the end of this month the proud owner of a gelding sired by Runaway Groom.
